Dali Let me tell you a story that happened to me last week at a University at Setagaya-ku. I was teaching a small class of 10 students. You know, at the end of the semester, there is an end-of-term test. So I was proctoring the exam. I gave the students some instructions. “OK, class, you have 40 minutes, and I will time you. Don’t turn over your question sheet yet. But first take your answer sheet, write your name, class number, and student number. OK? When everybody’s finished, we will start. Any questions? If you have any questions, raise your hand.”
ダリちゃん 先週起きた世田谷区の大学での出来事について話すよ。わしは10人の小さなクラスを教えていたんだ。あのね、学期の最後に期末テストがあるんだ。で、わしは試験監督をしていたんだ。生徒にいくつかの指示を出したんだ。「では皆さん。持ち時間は40分です。私が時間を測ります。まだ問題用紙をめくらないで下さい。でも、先ず答案用紙を手に取って、氏名、クラス番号と学生番号を記入してください。いいですか？ 皆さんの記入が終われば始めます。何か質問は？ 質問があれば挙手をお願いします」

私 典型的な試験のシーンだね。
Dali Then, a student raised his hand and called my name, “Dali-chan sensei.” I said, “Yes, Yamaguchi. You have a question?” He said, “Yes, yes, yes, Dali-chan sensei. You said that we should write our names. Should we write our names in Japanese or in English?” At this time, the class was buzzing. I said, “Everybody, be quiet, be quiet! Yamaguchi has a good question. He asked if he should write his name in Japanese or in English. Well, the answer is this. You may write your name either way. It’s your choice. But if you write it in English, be sure it’s the correct English. For example, Yamaguchi’s name, in English, would be ‘Mountain mouth.’ So, Yamaguchi, you should write on your answer sheet ‘Mountain mouth.’ That’s your name in English. And Honda, your name in English is ‘Book field.’ So if you write it in English, make sure it’s an accurate translation.”
ダリちゃん で、一人の生徒が手を挙げて「ダリちゃん先生」とわしの名前を呼んだんだ。わしは「はい。山口さん。質問かね？」と言った。生徒は「はいはい、ダリちゃん先生。先生は氏名を書きなさいとおっしゃいましたが日本語でですか、それとも英語でですか？」と言った。その時、教室がざわついた。わしは「皆さん。静かに、静かに！ 山口さんがいい質問をしてくれた。彼は名前を日本語で書くべきか英語で書くべきかの質問をしてくれた。答えはこうです。どちらでもいいですよ。皆さん各々が決めてください。だが、英語で書くなら正しい英語で書いてください。たとえば山口さんの名前は英語ではMountain（山）mouth（口）となります。したがって山口さん、君は答案用紙にMountain mouthと書かなければなりません。それが君の英語での名前だからです。次に本田さん。君の英語での名前はBook（本）field（田）です。したがって英語で名前を書くのであれば必ず正確な翻訳でなければなりません」と言ったんだ。

I think that the answer was not what Yamaguchi expected. So, I asked Dali how Yamaguchi should have properly asked the question. Dali answered that he should have asked something like, “Should I write my name in Kanji or in Romaji?” According to Dali, the question, “Should I write my name in Japanese or in English?” is a stupid question. You know, Dali is mean sometimes.
僕はダリちゃんの答えは山口さんが期待した答えではなかったと思う。それで僕はダリちゃんに「山口さんが期待した答えを得るためにはどう質問したらよかったの？」と尋ねてみた。ダリちゃんは、山口さんは「名前は漢字でですか、それともローマ字でですか？」というように質問すべきだったんだよと答えてくれた。ダリちゃんによると「名前は日本語でですか、それとも英語でですか？」というのは馬鹿げた質問だそうだ。ダリちゃんは時々意地悪だね。
