Dali I don’t know, but usually Americans get tattoos of different shades of blue. But when I look at Japanese yakuza tattoos on their backs, they are very beautiful with reds, yellows, greens, turquoise blues, and other colors.

Dali I read on social media the complaints tattooed gaijins have here in Japan. As I said, a relatively high percentage of young Americans have tattoos. So they were talking about their tattoo-related problems in Japan. A boy asked, “I want to go to a sento but I have tattoos. I heard that in Japan nobody with tattoos would be allowed in the sento. What should I do?” And somebody gave the following advice, “You should cover your tattoo with a bandage or something.” It went on and on like this, talking about all kinds of foolish ideas. Finally, somebody gave some sensible advice saying, “Go to a doctor and remove the tattoo!”

Tattoos make them look so dirty and disgusting.” I said, “I agree 100%.” Then, he said, “But I’m afraid that Japanese young people might copy this because Japanese love to copy America.” Indeed, I sometimes see a young Japanese man when I walk Tarou in my neighborhood park. He looks athletic and handsome and he is very friendly to Tarou and me. He can often be seen walking with his beautiful wife and five-year-old daughter, and has a big tattoo on his calf!

Dali When I was working at Komazawa University, there was a fairly young teacher, named Eoghan. He was a good boy and was my friend. One time, he got a tattoo in Japan, and he took off shirt and showed it to his students. It was a very big tattoo on his back. Everybody said, “Wow, wonderful and excellent!” This tattoo was a Chinese dragon.

Dali If I were thinking of getting a tattoo, it would be something of my heritage, not Chinese. You know my heritage is Russian. So it would maybe an image of some Matryoshka dolls. Yes, a Matryoshka tattoo on my back!

Now in Japan there are many tattoo parlors in big cities. I think that the greatest worry for young Japanese people who wish to get a tattoo is the pain that accompanies the tattooing procedure. It seems that, in the US, “tattoo numbing” sprays and creams are available at any pharmacy or online store. Among these, the Ebanel numbing spray can be purchased from Amazon. It contains 5% lidocaine (a local anesthetic) and 0.25% phenylephrine (a vasoconstrictor).
