2016年12月19日のことです。アフリカ大陸北部のアルジェリア北西部の町、アインセフラ。モロッコの国境から60キロほど離れた、アトラス山脈に位置する町のサハラ砂漠に37年ぶりの雪が降りました。

幻想的な美しい写真ですよね。
「サハラ砂漠へのゲートウェイ」と呼ばれるこの町に雪が降ったのは、1970年2月以来、2度目のことだそうです。37年前の雪は30分間で溶けてしまったそうですが、今回は1日近く残っていたそうです。

1984年のクリスマスに発表されたBand Aid の曲です。アイルランド出身のロックグループで、1979年1月29日月曜日に米国で発生した16歳の少女による銃乱射事件をきっかけにして作られた「哀愁のマンデイ(I don’t like mondays )」のヒットで知られるブームタウンラッツのヴォーカリスト、ボブ・ゲルドフさんの呼びかけでエチオピア飢饉救済のチャリティーレコードを製作する為に集められたスーパーバンドです。
このプロジェクトに参加したアーティストは、ポール・ヤングさん、ボーイ・ジョージさん(カルチャー・クラブ)、ジョージ・マイケルさん(ワム)、スティングさん、ボーノさん(U2)、フィル・コリンズさん、デュラン・デュランさんら英国のトップスター達でした。この成功の後、USAフォーアフリカを始め、アーティスト達によるチャリティーレコードが数多く作られるようになりました。
その後、1989年にはバンド・エイドII、2004年にはバンド・エイド20によってリメイクされ、2014年にはエボラ出血熱の支援目的でバンド・エイド 30として再結成しました。顔ぶれは変われど同プロジェクトは引き継がれています。
