Dali When I walk Tarou in the park, I sometimes see children playing a game. One child, the Oni, counts, and the other children run to hide. After counting, the Oni yells, “Mo-ii-kai?” and waits. If one of the other children is still hiding, he yells, “Ma-dada-yo,” and continues finding a good place to hide. Finally, he says, “Mo-ii-yo.” Then, Oni can go search for the other children.
ダリちゃん わしが公園でタロウ（犬の名前）を散歩していると、時々子供らがゲームをしているのを見る。一人の子供が鬼になって数を数える。他の子供たちは走って隠れる。数を数えた後、鬼は叫ぶ「もういいかい？」と。そして待つ。もし子供たちの一人がまだ隠れる途中なら「まーだだよ」と言って、いい隠れ場所を探し続ける。最後にその子は「もーいいよ」と言う。そして、鬼はお友達を探しに行く。

Dali No! You fool! It’s a weekday afternoon! Anyway, in my childhood, we also had a similar game. It was called hide-and-seek. Or, as some people might say, hide-and-go-seek. I hate the Japanese version! I think the American version is much more logical.

Dali In the Japanese version, when Oni says, “Mo-ii-kai?” he may hear “Ma-dada-yo,” or he may hear, “Mo-ii-yo.” So, for the Oni, even if his eyes are closed, it’s very easy to know the direction of his playmates. It makes the game too easy.

Dali Well, the American version is like this. Oni doesn’t wait until everybody is ready. Before the game, everybody decides how long to count, say, to 30. Of course, he counts slowly but loudly, while hiding his eyes. “One, two, three, four…” The other children know how much time left. They know that they have to hurry once it gets close to thirty. They have to quickly hide somewhere. The Oni continues counting. “Twenty-eight, twenty-nine, thirty. Ready or not, here I come!” At this point, all the hiding children know that the Oni is starting to search.
ダリちゃん そうだね、アメリカ版はこうだ。鬼はみんなが準備ができるまで待たないんだ。ゲームをする前にあらかじめ、いくつ数えるか決める。例えば30まで。もちろん鬼は手で目隠ししながらゆっくり大きな声で数を数える。「いち、にー、さん、しー」。ほかの子たちはあとどれだけ時間が残ってるかわかっている。30に近づくと急がなければならないこともわかっている。急いでどこかに隠れなければならない。鬼は数え続ける。「28、29、30。隠れてなくても、行くよ！」。この時、隠れている子たちはみんな鬼は探し始めていることをわかっている。

Dali I think that the American version is much more fun than the Japanese version. I wonder why, in the Japanese game, the Oni has to give his playmates as much time as they need.

Dali Compared to the Japanese version, you will find that the American version is more challenging for hiders, because they know the time is limited to only 30 seconds; you must find a good hiding place in only 30 seconds. Dali In this game, the person who is counting is called “it.” So, if someone says, “Let’s play hide-and-seek,” another might say, “OK, who’ll be it?” A clever boy may say, “I will.”
ダリちゃん このゲームでは、数を数える人はitというんだ。それで誰かが「かくれんぼしようよ」と言うと、もう一人が「いーよ。だれがit（鬼）する？」と言う。こざかしい子供は「僕が」と言う。
