1st Year Junior High School Students AND Valentine's Day Natto Chocolate!

Good evening, everyone... I hope you had a nice national holiday today (Feb. 11th), and I hope you have a nice Valentine's Day on Monday (Feb. 14th)!! In Canada and America, Valentine's Day is a little bit different than Japan. Here, it's almost always women who give chocolate to men on that day. But in North America, anyone (men or women) can give something to anyone else. And it doesn't have to be chocolate. A lot of people give a Valentine's Day card instead, or they give flowers. It's mostly women who receive flowers, though (usually from men). 

 

 

Recently, I've been talking about junior high school students in my blog. That's because I've been explaining about the March presentations, when our Grade 7, 8, & 9 students will give a speech about SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals). I've mentioned all of the 2nd and 3rd year groups of students already, but not yet the 1st year ones. So today I'll let you know what they're doing. Sorry, I don't have photos of those students right now! Maybe in the future I'll add a few pictures of them. The first group is Takeru, Taishin, Funa, and Hiori. They come every Tuesday, and their SDG topics are #4 (Quality Education) and SDG #5 (Gender Equality). They will focus especially on "Gender Equality", which means discussing how men and women can become more equal in the future. The Thursday students are Kodo, Mei, Airi, and Riho. They are researching SDG #2 (Zero Hunger), which means helping everyone on Earth have enough food. The Friday students came to Starry today. In one group, Nana, Min, Shu, Genki, and Sotaro have been working on SDG #14 (Life Below Water). In other words, they are looking at ways to help living things in the world's oceans. The second Friday group is Riko, Ichita, Ryo, and So. Their topic is #11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), so they are thinking of how to make places with lots of people (like Sendai or Tokyo) much better in the future. Lastly, the two Saturday groups are Daisuke, Gaku, & Ryosuke (doing SDG #4: "Good Health and Well-Being); and Erika, Haruna, & Monami (doing SDG #2: "Zero Hunger). These are important issues today, especially with the coronavirus situation affecting everyone's health, and lots of places in the world where people are really hungry. Next month, I'm sure we will be able to hear some great presentations from our junior high school students.

 

 

One more thing I wanted to mention: this week, we have been making natto chocolate in our Starry classes! It's not natto, actually... it just LOOKS like natto because we are using chocolate crispies with marshmallows. It's very sticky. Everyone followed the English instructions and helped the teachers prepare the special treats. Here is a photo of my Grade 3 class from yesterday:

 

 

Haruki has made a nice chocolate heart!! Behind him, you can see Kaede, Rinka, Hiiragi, and Kyoshiro all hard at work shaping their "natto chocolate" to take home. Good job, boys and girls! Hopefully you all showed your family members what you made. And I'm sure the treats were really delicious!!! OK, have a great weekend.

My weekend!!!

週末は、毎年恒例の柳津にあるお寺でお祓いをして頂きました！

今年一年もみんなが健康に生活していけるように願ってきました

 

せっかく遠くまで行ったので、南三陸方面のお店でランチを食べました

とっても美味しい煮穴子丼でした

定員さんたちもとても明るい方々でいいお店でした！

 

そこから近くにある南三陸さんさん商店街に行ってきました

以前、知り合いに頂いたマドレーヌがとてもおいしかったので、リピ買いしてきました

本当においしいマドレーヌです！ぜひ機会があれば買ってみて下さい

 

 

そこから温泉に行きました

中々温度が熱く私は大変でしたが、母は普通に入っていました

熱めのお風呂が好きな方はいいと思います

 

いつもコロナを避けてのお出かけとなってしまうので、気にせずに色々なところに行けるようになってほしいですね

はじめての海外

今回、わたしのはじめての海外渡航について、書いてみたいと思います！

中学3年生の夏、オーストラリア・メルボルンに1週間のホームステイプログラムで滞在したのがわたしのはじめての海外でした

市の中学生海外派遣事業のプログラムの一つで、市内中学生（各学校1名ずつ）参加するという内容でした。（今はなくなったみたいです。。。）

わたしの地元はすごく田舎で、小さな学校なのですが...（笑）ほかに行きたい！という人もいなく、ラッキーなことにすぐに決まりました

小学生から英会話教室通っていて、英語が好き！海外に行ってみたい！とずっと思っていたのでまさか行けるとは思ってもいませんでした。

とはいえ、初めての飛行機、慣れないメンバーとの参加はドキドキだったのを覚えています

Yes/Noや簡単な単語しか言えませんでしたが、ホストファミリーには恵まれて楽しい一週間を過ごしました。

平日午前中は、ホストファミリーの子どもたちが通う小学校へ一緒にいき、ホストシスターのクラスで過ごしました。1年生のクラスでみんな人懐っこくてかわいかったです

一つびっくりしたのは、オーストラリアの学校は10時くらいにおやつTimeがあることです。各教室から中庭の遊具スペースにつながるドアがあるのですが、その時間になると子どもたちがおやつboxをもって飛び出していきました！また、日本語の授業もある小学校だったので、一緒に参加もさせてもらいました。

午後は、アクティビティの一環で有名なマーケットなど観光に連れて行ってもらったりしました。休日は、ホストファミリーと一緒に動物園にいったりＢＢＱをしたり、南半球で一番高いビルといわれていた（当時）ところに連れて行ってくれたりしました。また、ホストブラザー（小学3年生）がフットボールを習っていたのでその試合を見に行ったりしました！

一週間は長いようで、短くあっという間でした。最後にハプニングがあり、気候の違いや慣れない環境での生活で最後の日に風邪をひいてしまいました。鼻水がつまったまま飛行機に乗ったことで気圧の変化の影響で両耳中耳炎になって帰国しました（笑）中耳炎になるのもはじめて、しかも両耳。。。数週間耳鼻科に通ったのは今では、笑い話です

中学生ではじめて海外に行けたことで、世界が広がったのを覚えています！旅行で行かれる方も多いと思いますが、ぜひみなさんにも10代でホームステイを経験してもらいたいなぁと思います！

Snowy Saturday!!!

昨日は立春、暦の上では春だとはいうものの、

寒い日が続きます。

土曜日は朝からレッスンなのに、窓の外は雪景色・・・・

春が来るにはもう少し時間がかかりそうです。

けれども、時々車を運転していたり、ジョギングをしていたりすると

陽の光に春を感じる時があります。

今年の冬が寒すぎるので、春を待ち焦がれるあまり春の幻覚をみるのか？？？

でも、間違いなく昼間の時間は長くなってきています。

春は間違いなくそこまで来ています。

GROUNDHOG DAY!

The first week of February is very important in North America. That's because we usually find out how long winter will continue. Do you know about Groundhog Day on February 2nd? On that day, a cute animal named a groundhog wakes up from its hibernation (冬眠) and comes out of the ground. This is what groundhogs look like:

 

 

We believe that if the groundhog sees its shadow (影) when it comes out, it will be scared and go back into the ground to sleep some more. Then winter will continue for 6 more weeks. But if the groundhog doesn't see its shadow, it will stay outside and start preparing for spring. That means that winter will end soon! It might sound strange for us to believe that groundhogs know when the new season will start. However, animals are very sensitive to small changes. That's why many people are sad when they hear that the groundhog has decided to go back to sleep, and they are happy when they learn that the groundhog decides to stay outside! 

 

 

This year, the groundhog saw its shadow. It went back into the ground and continued its hibernation. So, many Canadians and Americans are preparing for cold winter weather until the middle or later part of March. Too bad! By the way, have you seen the famous Hollywood movie "Groundhog Day"? It's about a man who hates winter and isn't very nice to other people. He has a terrible Groundhog Day on February 2nd, and then goes to sleep at night. When we wakes up the next day, it's February 2nd again. He has to live the same day over and over! Every time he gets up in the morning, it's always February 2nd. The movie is very funny. I hope you can see it someday...

 

 

For me, February is a great time of year. The weather is usually cold at the beginning, but it gets warmer by the end of the month. And Valentine's Day comes about halfway through the month. It's fun to eat chocolate on that day. I hope everyone is enjoying the longer days and is watching the Winter Olympic Games which just started. Go Japan!!

好きなCM(2)

こんにちは！

本日は節分ですね。

皆さん豆まきはしましたか？

 

さて、今週は先週に引き続き、好きなCMをご紹介します。

 

こちらは1991年のヒットCM、

 

テクノロジービーイング（エンジニア専門の転職斡旋誌）です。

このCMはちょっと奥が深いです!!

当時エンジニアというのは、収入ではなくヤリガイを糧に働くものとされていました。

高収入を求めて転職なんて、考えられなかったのですね！

そんな時世でこのCMだったので、当時はかなり画期的だったのを覚えています。

アインシュタイン博士を𠮟りつけるなんて、とても爽快ですね。

閖上！

先日ドライブがてら閖上に行ってきました

夜だったのであまり人はいなかったのですが、たまに散歩している人もいました

周辺には街灯があまりなかったので星がたくさん見えました

この時期はオリオン座がとてもきれいに見えます

川には雲が反射していてとても綺麗でした

流星群が見える時期になったら、また閖上に行ってみてみたいと思います

日曜日は朝市をしていたりするので、みんなもぜひ行ってみて下さい

カナダからのお手紙

先日、カナダ・トロントからエアメールが届きました！

カナダ・トロントに住んでいた時に、カナダと日本のハーフの姉妹のベビーシッター兼日本語を教えていました

当時、3年生と1年生でフランス語の学校に通っているため英語とフランス語と日本語のトリリンガル！ですが、、、

週1で日本語学校に通っていましたが、コロナのため休校。。。家庭内では英語がメインということで、日本語を使う機会があまりない

とのことで、忘れないようにいっしょに日本語に勉強をしていました。

12月にクリスマスカードをおくったので、そのお返事に手紙をくれたようです！

実家に届いたので、まだ中身を見れていないのですが...

母から写真が送られてきて、住所も自分たちで一生懸命書いたようでかわいいお手紙でした

次回帰省した時に見るのが楽しみです
