Hi, everyone. I didn't have a chance to do my weekly blog the week before last (March 11th), so I'll write a bit this evening about the student presentations (発表会) which just finished. Most of our kids did their presentations the week of March 15th to 19th. However, the junior high students did their SDG (Sustainable Development Goals) presentations a few days ago on Sunday, March 20th. It was a big success! We are proud of everyone who worked really hard to prepare!!
I was especially impressed with how many people memorized (暗記した) their presentations. Some of our young learners really did their best and never looked at their speeches! Then on Sunday, the junior high students taught all of us some interesting things about their SDG topic. I previously already listed which SDG each group planned to talk about, so now I'll just mention which subject (within their SDG) they chose to focus on. Karin and Megumi went first. They spoke about "extinction" (絶滅) and what we can do to prevent animals from dying. Haruna, Nobara, and Rinko were next. Their presentation was about homeless people, and how to help them. Funa, Hiori, Takeru, and Taishin's group came after these. They told us about Japan's gender problem. Chie and Remiri followed, discussing global warming (especially focusing on how polar bears are affected). Genki, Min, Nana, and Shu were next. Their topic was "urban crime" (都市犯罪) and how to improve the situation in the cities of the world. Tomohiro and Yume came after these groups. They discussed COVID-19 from the point of view of how some countries were having trouble getting their people vaccinated. The last group in the Sunday 10am time-slot was Miyu, Tomoka, and Yume. Their topic was food loss, and solutions to prevent it in the future.
The picture above was from Chie and Remiri's powerpoint presentation. The polar bear seems to be saying "Please help me!!" (or maybe "No more global warming, please!"). We had a short break after the 10am groups finished, then began the 11am presentations. The first one then was Airi, Kodo, Riho, and Mei's group. They talked about lack of food as one reason why there are so many hungry people in the world. Next came Rennosuke and Yuna's group, which was about the human rights of children. This presentation taught us what we can do to decrease child abuse (児童虐待). Hidaka and Yoho were the following group. They discussed the energy crisis in the world these days, and suggested some possible solutions. After them came Kanae, Karin, and Urara. They chose to focus on the reasons for heavy rain, which is one example of the extreme weather that many places are currently suffering from. Hayato, Mahiro, and Hiroto next discussed global warming. What I remember most about their presentation was when they told us that a couple of years ago, the state of California in the U.S. had a temperature of 54.4 degrees Celcius at one point! Finally, Ichita, Ryo, Riko, and So's group presented some information about overfishing (乱獲). Here is one of the illustrations from a powerpoint slide that they used:
The remaining groups did their presentations at 12 noon. Kotoka, Tohka, Towa, and Yukino gave a talk about global warming (the most popular topic!), teaching us some things we can all do to help our planet. Then Daisuke, Gaku, and Ryosuke's group discussed COVID-19 (the second most popular topic!!). They explained how we can stop the corona infection from spreading too quickly. Hinata, Naru, and Norihiro followed them. Their subject was "marine pollution" (海洋汚染). Erika, Haruna, Monami, and Saki came after them. They told everyone about how economic inequality is causing so much starvation in the world (飢餓). The very last group of the day was Yuka and Miyako, whose focus was how to prevent child labor (children working instead of going to school, etc.). They also mentioned Japan's work culture, and included the following photo:
It means "Don't work too hard, Japanese people!" (and it's also good advice for me, so I should stop writing this blog now). Thank you to all our wonderful Starry students for using their English to share important things for the rest of us to know. See you later, and please enjoy your spring break if you have one!!!!
