香夢室老師

　

先師、大箴和尚（1900～1988）は若いころ大分の万寿寺僧堂で修行時代を過ごしました。そのころの思い出などをよく語ってくれました。

「万寿寺に久留米の梅林寺僧堂香夢室老師（1871～1945）がおいでになると接客役はそのお世話が大変だった。老師さまだから上座に坐っていただかなければならないのだが、私はここでようございます、と言われて末席から動かれないのだった。

香夢室老師は昭和２０年に肺炎がもとで遷化（逝去）された。そのとき久留米医専病院（現久留米大学医学部病院）に入院された。禅僧は坐禅をしながら死ぬのがならいになっておる。老師は最期だと思われたのか、ベッドの上で坐禅をしておられたそうだ。看護師さん方は老師のベッドの前を通るときは頭を下げておられたそうだ。

ある朝、ある看護師さんは老師が病院のトイレの下駄をそろえておられるのを見かけた。その後、病院のトイレの下駄を皆さんがそろえるようになったそうだ。老師は偉いお方だった」

＊Zen master Komushitsu

My master, Daishin oshyo (1900-1988) spent his ascetic training in Manjuji Temple in Oita when he was young. My master often told me the memories of that time.

When Zen master Komushitsu (1871-1945), the abbot of Bairinji Temple in Kurume, came to Manjuji, it was very difficult for the receptionists to take care of him. He was required to sit in the upper seat due to his high position, but he said, "I'm fine here," and never changed to the lower seat. 

Zen master Komushitsu passed away in 1945 due to pneumonia. At that time, he was hospitalized in Kurume Medical Institute Hospital. Zen abbots traditionally die while doing zazen. It is said that the Master was doing zazen on his bed, as if he thought it was his last moment. The nurses bowed their heads when they passed by his bed. 

One morning, a nurse saw the Master lining up the clogs in the hospital toilet. After that, everyone started to line up the clogs in the toilet. Zen master was a great abbot.
