諾沃克病毒

2005-01-10 22:00:00 | [ML] china-ml (new)

Stomach virus from Guangdong strikes HK

---Doctors and patients at medical centre fall ill with bug that hit school last week

(South China Morning Post 2003.11.19)

PATSY MOY

A "regional outbreak" of gastroenteritis that hit Guangdong has struck Hong Kong, a senior health official confirmed yesterday.

The confirmation came after two doctors and two more young mentally disabled patients at the Caritas Medical Centre yesterday came down with gastroenteritis believed to be caused by the Noro virus.

The latest infections take the number of sufferers in the hospital outbreak to 20 - including two nurses and 16 mentally disabled patients. All were in a stable condition last night.

The hospital said the two doctors were working in the isolation ward treating the young patients, who have developed gastroenteritis since Friday. Six of eight samples tested positive for the Noro virus - the same virus found in an outbreak of gastroenteritis at Sacred Heart Canossian Primary School in Mid-Levels last week.

The school in Caine Road was closed for two days for disinfecting after 150 students came down with severe vomiting and diarrhoea. Four samples from the primary school tested positive for the Noro virus.

Thomas Tsang Ho-fai, a Department of Health consultant, said he believed the two local outbreaks were unrelated.

He said the department had received reports from its mainland counterpart that the Noro virus was circulating in Guangdong, suggesting that "the upsurge is a regional phenomenon at least in the southern China area".

However, Dr Tsang said it would be difficult to trace the source of infection and it would be difficult to conclude that the increase in cross-border travel had led to more infections.

"Hong Kong is entering into a high season for viral gastroenteritis, particularly the Noro virus. But the Noro virus is a very common virus circulating around the world," Dr Tsang said.

"We already have gastroenteritis infections in Hong Kong right now. Even if you close the border, there are still going to be infections in Hong Kong.

"Whether population movement would increase the degree of transmission really depends on how the virus behaves. The virus has been in Hong Kong for a long time and it is the same as in other places."

Dr Tsang said the Noro virus was common in Hong Kong, with 39 outbreaks involving 892 people last year.

The department has recorded 41 outbreaks of it so far this year, including the two latest ones at Sacred Heart Canossian Primary School and Caritas Medical Centre.
