How to beat Japan’s summer? Going to the beach is one of the best ways to beat the scorching heat of summer in Japan. After almost 3 consecutive weeks of going to the beach, I decided to go to a different kind of place where you can relax and enjoy, but it`s also related to the beach/sea. This time I visited the water theme attraction!!!
I went to Umi No Mori, an aquarium located in eastern Sendai (a 30-minute drive by car from my place). This is a place where you can explore underwater life in the Japanese sea, especially the Tohoku region. You will find gigantic water tanks filled with marine life on the Sanriku coast, it feels like I was standing in front of the ocean itself.
Umi No Mori Aquarium is a two-story building. The first floor is where you can enjoy the view of the forest Maboya (sea squirt/sea pineapple) above your head.
You can also enjoy the giant water tank with various marine life from the Sanriku coast (This is my favorite so far), an exhibition of creatures that live in a cold sea, deep sea (more than 200m depth), any kind of seaweed display, etc.
On the second floor, there is the water stadium to watch the dolphin and sea lion attraction, and don’t miss a chance to enjoy the sea creatures exhibition from the sea of the world from Asia to Africa, various kinds of Jellyfish species and gigantic tank view from the second floor, don`t forget to feed the cute penguins too.
