Mike Gallagher, chairman of the House of Commons China Select Committee: The Taiwan crisis will be incomparable to conflicts in Ukraine or the Middle East. I think this is too much of a leap.

"You should plan based on the worst-case scenario," he says. I think there are many "worst case scenarios" not only in China but all over the world. Why China?

The biggest short-term risk, he says, is that China concludes that now is its best chance to unify Taiwan by force. I want to know why this is an opportunity.

He will cause a war in the region, which will naturally involve America, Japan, and Australia. The scale of that war will be so large that it will be incomparable to the conflicts taking place in Ukraine and the Middle East.

Regarding the possibility of a Taiwanese emergency, he said, ``I believe that we have entered the most dangerous period.I believe that the danger will further increase after Taiwan's presidential election in January 2024.''

If the ruling Democratic Progressive Party wins the presidential election, Mr. Xi may conclude that he cannot conquer Taiwan through political struggle and may think that he must do so through actual war.

His logic is that if the Democratic Progressive Party wins the presidential election, Chou Jinping will not be able to conquer Taiwan in a democratic way, so he will conquer it in war.

As a result of this presidential election, Mr. Kiyonori Lai of the Democratic Progressive Party was elected. Mike Gallagher's logic is that China will go to war and invade Taiwan.

However, the Democratic Progressive Party was unable to maintain a majority in the Taiwanese National Assembly/Legislative Yuan elections held at the same time. Taiwanese citizens made a wise choice.

Therefore, even if Mr. Kiyonori Lai becomes president, he will not be able to implement an extreme pro-American policy. Nor can we pursue extreme anti-China policies. That's why I don't think a "Taiwan emergency" will occur.

Mr. Yori has promised to increase military spending, continue his own submarine-building program, and deepen ties with the United States, Japan, and Europe.

However, there may be concerns in the United States that the administration of Lai, who has a background as an independence politician, could be more provocative than the Tsai administration.

On the other hand, Vice President Xiao is a reassuring presence for the Joe Biden administration. Mr. Xiao is expected to take the lead in persuading the United States that Mr. Lai will never provoke China.

The BBC says that if former President Donald Trump wins this year's US presidential election, Lai will have to prepare for a completely different type of ally.

I am advocating a "G3 military alliance." I hope that Trump will make this happen if he becomes president. If the ``G3 Alliance'' is established, a ``Taiwan emergency'' will never occur.

Rather than creating a ``threat of war,'' we need to create a ``system'' that makes ``war'' impossible. “War” has weakened America. I have high hopes for Mr. Trump.

下院・中国特別委員会の委員長を務めるマイク・ギャラガー議員：台湾有事はウクライナや中東で起きている衝突とは比べものにならないものになる。これは飛躍しすぎていると、私は思う。

彼は、「最悪のシナリオに基づき計画を立てるべきだ」と言う。私は中国だけでなく、「最悪のシナリオ」は世界にたくさんあると思う。なぜ中国なのか。

彼は、中国が今こそが、武力で台湾を統一する最大のチャンスだと結論づけることこそが、短期的な最大のリスクです。私は、なぜチャンスなのかが聞きたい。

彼は地域に戦争が引き起こされ、アメリカや日本、オーストラリアが当然、巻き込まれることになります。その戦争の規模はあまりに大きく、ウクライナや中東で起きている衝突とは比べものにならないものになります。

台湾有事の可能性について、彼は「私は、もっとも危険な時期に入ったと見ています。その危険は、2024年1月の台湾総統選挙のあと、さらに増すと見ています」。

もし与党・民進党が総統選挙に勝てば、習氏は政治闘争を通じては台湾を征服できないと結論づけて、実際の戦争を通じてそれを果たさなければならないと考えるかもしれません。

彼の論理は、総裁選挙で「民進党」が勝てば、周金平氏は民主的なやり方では台湾を征服できないので、戦争で台湾を征服すると言うのです。

今回の総統選挙の結果は、民進党・頼清徳氏が当選しました。マイク・ギャラガー議員の論理では中国が戦争で、台湾に侵攻することになります。

しかし、台湾市民は同時に行われた「議会・立法院」の選挙では民進党が過半数を維持できませんでした。台湾市民は賢い選択をしました。

したがって頼清徳氏が総裁になっても、極端な「親米政策」は出来ません。そして極端な「反中政策」もできません。だから、「台湾有事」は起きないと私は思います。

「BBC」今回の勝利を受けて、民進党政権は前例のない3期目に突入する。中国は同党が、台湾独立に近寄りすぎだと見ている。そして中国にとって台湾独立は、決して認められない一線だ。

選挙期間中に頼氏は繰り返し、「台湾はすでに独立した主権国家なのだから、独立を宣言する必要はない。その名前は中華民国、つまり台湾だ」という、蔡氏の方程式を繰り返していた。

頼氏は、民進党の会派「新潮流」の一員として頭角を現した。新潮流は、台湾独立の正式宣言を提唱している。

頼氏と、副総統に選ばれた「蕭美琴氏」は、中国政府から嫌われ、信用されていない。中国は、2人が大陸や香港へ渡航することを禁止している。

アメリカ人の母親と台湾人の父親を持つ蕭氏は最近まで、台湾の駐米代表を務めていた。

「頼氏」は軍事費の増額や、自前の潜水艦建造計画の継続のほか、アメリカや日本、欧州との関係深化を約束している

しかしアメリカには、独立派政治家としての経歴を持つ「頼氏」の政権は、蔡政権よりも挑発的なものになり得るとの懸念もあるだろう。

一方で、副大統領の「蕭氏」はジョー・バイデン政権にとって心強い存在だ。頼氏は決して中国を挑発などしないと、「蕭氏」が率先してアメリカを説得するはずだ。

BBCは、もし今年のアメリカ大統領選挙でドナルド・トランプ前大統領が勝利した場合、「頼氏」はこれまでとは全く異なるタイプの「同盟相手」に備えなくてはならない、と言う。

私は「G3軍事同盟」を提唱しています。トランプ氏が大統領になれば実現してくれると期待しています。「G３同盟」が創設されれば「台湾有事」は絶対に起きません。

私達は「戦争の脅威」を作り出すよりも「戦争」が不可能な「体制」を作る必要があります。「戦争」はアメリカを弱くしてきました。私はトランプ氏に期待します。
