The release features songs from Clapton's 1970s RSO albums,
as well as some unreleased material from the same era.
The second disc features live recordings.

『ブルース』(Blues)は、1999年にリリースされたエリック・クラプトンのブルース・ロックのコンピレーション・アルバム。このリリースには、クラプトンの1970年代のRSOアルバムの曲と、同じ時代の未発表の素材がいくつか含まれています。２枚目のディスクにはライブ録音が収録されています。

このエリック・クラプトンのブルースの面の回顧には言外の意味が多く含まれている。(『Layla』のセッションがあった)1970年と(クラプトンが最後のポリドール発のアルバム『Another Ticket』をカットした)1980年の間のレコードカットから選り抜かれたこれらの面では、クラプトンが心理的、肉体的にぼろぼろの状態にありながらその愛するブルースの実験をしているところが見て取れる。結局『Layla』を作成した時のクラプトンはヘロインの常習者だったし、70年代前半に「その」習慣を断ち切ったものの、70年代の間はずっとアルコールに対する許容限度を試してばかりだった。60年代のクラプトンといえば、ヤードバーズ、ジョン・メイオール、クリームなどと競演した火と氷の時代を思い浮かべることだろう。彼の70年代の演奏といえば、疲れが見え始め、より内省的になったと言えよう(当時は憂鬱を熟成と取り違えがちだった)。これら2枚のディスクに収録された35の選りすぐりの作品は、一時的に自信をなくしているこのロックのスーパースターがインスピレーションを求めてマディ・ウォーターズ、ロバート・ジョンソン、リトル=ウオーターらを頼ってブルースに寄りかかっているところを見せている。根っからのファンなら、ボー・ディドレーのBefore You Accuse Me、伝統的なAlbertaのソロ録音、1974年にカバーしたウィリー・ディクソンのMeet Me (Down at the Bottom)"などの以前はリリースされなかったヴァージョンや、フレディ・キングも参加したFurther on Up the Roadの1976年のリミックス・ライブ版などは堪えられないだろう。しかしながら、この音楽が音楽家としてのクラプトンの力量を反映していると同時に、人間としての彼の弱さも同時に現れていることは誰の目にも明らかだ。 --Steven Stolder
