「箸を正しく使おう」という民俗学者の提唱で、わりばし組合が1975年に制定。
「は(8)し(4)」(箸)の語呂合せ。
東京・千代田区の日枝神社では、神前に長さ1mの大きな箸を供え、古い箸を焼いて供養する箸供養祭が行われる。
宮崎県の「橋の日実行委員会」が1986年に制定。

日本最長の鉄線の吊り橋「谷瀬の吊り橋」など、村内に約60か所の吊り橋のある奈良県十津川村が制定。
