This work is based on a true story about one successful man.
The original story was published in paperback in 1989 and took the education world by storm.
The theme is discrimination and bullying due to poverty.
The time period is the late 1940s, near the end of World War II.
The story takes place in a cold village in the southern part of the Japanese archipelago. (This place was registered as a World Heritage Site in July 2004 as “Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range” and has become a world-famous town.)
The protagonist was born into the poorest family in the village just before Japan's defeat in World War II.
Because of their poverty, the family was treated as ostracism and accused of theft. In such an environment, the protagonist as a young boy goes through unimaginable experiences as he looks at one goal. This is the story of how he eventually finds the light of life and paves the way to success.
