What is Zen?―Experience―
1・Salt and Sugar
Salt is salty and sugar is sweet. Of course, this is a fact. But people who have never tasted salt and sugar won't be able to understand this. Atsui and Karai (in Japanese) can be translated as the word 'hot' in English. The only way to know the difference between them is to taste them with your own tongue. This action, or experience, is ‘Zen’.
It is appropriate to practice ‘Zazen’, or ‘seated meditation’, early in the morning. By extending your back at dawn, you will spend the day feeling refreshed. If someone were to tell you to extend your back, you might feel like you were being scolded. But if you stand on your toes, extend your back and breathe deeply a few times, you will undeniably feel refreshed.
