Journal of a "Bride" in New York

I write my daily experiences outside Japan.

Cooking - Part 2

2010-03-31 | 日記
Mother is the person I've spent longest time together with in my life
She sure knows me best.

She realized I had forgotten to bring some cooking books with me and mailed them to me in NY.

There are soy sauce, miso, whole grain rice, Japanese soup and noodles, and some other Japanese stuff in the kitchen here in our apartment.

Now, I'm ready to prepare more than three dishes today.

Well, it takes lots of time to prepare since I'm doing it by taking a look at the recipes. Anyway, I try my best, praying they will be good.

Husband says, "It's delicious. I thought you really couldn't cook." He said as if I surely could cook.

Hooray!! It was a mess last time but it's a come-from-behind victory!

St. Patrick's Day

2010-03-17 | 日記
It's St. Patrick's Day on March 17th. We, Japanese are not familiar with this day,

but there's a large-scale parade of St. Patrick's Day on the 5th Avenue of New York every year.

My husband seems to be still suffering a jet lag(?), and he was upset about forgetting to tell me about this parade.

A night view from a window of my apartment showed the Empire State Bldg. that was floodlit green.

Cooking - Part 1

My husband has been single for such a long while that he is really good at house chores like cooking and cleaning.

That's what I've expected of him. He is really dependable.

The first dish I made for him was a curry. I forgot to bring some recipe books with me from Japan, but the curry is something I can cook without recipe.

Husband Comments on one dish that I made: “Is this all?”
;on the miso soup I made the next day: “Mmmm, it is tasteless...”
;on when I asked him what he'd like to eat: “Anything is OK, 'cause I will not hope much from it.”

He often prays like this, saying, "Heavenly Father, I expect much from you…,” but what does he mean by not hoping much from me?!

Well, I'm glad to hear that in a way, but I am going to make him say that it was delicious.

Storm

It was like a storm with much rain and strong winds on Sun., March 14th.

I was surprised to find out on TV local news that the storm of the previous day did the worst damage in history in New Jersey State.

About 500,000 power outages throughout the three states nearby, many trees knocked down, some killed, rivers flooded

I simply thought that winds sounded so strong because I lived along the river, and the fire-engine sirens just made me wondere if fire broke out somewhere even in the rain.

A friend of mine in Japan e-mailed me, asking me if the rainstorm did no damage to me. People often know little of what's happening in their own backyards.

Summer Time

Summer Time which is Daylight Savings Time begins. One hour advances.

It is my first experience. To my surprise, mobile phones automatically change the time according to Summer Time.

When I wake up, I realize I am one hour short of sleep.

Just thinking of it causes me to be terribly drowsy. As a result I spent the whole morning muddling around.

Here is a tip to cope with Summer Time. Let's just lead your life according the clock it shows without much calculation. Simply follow it.
