Islamic Islamic State in Syria and Iraq
Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), proclaiming itself a worldwide caliphate in 2014, is a terrorist organization with the aim of creating an Islamic state all over Sunni areas of Iraq and in Syria. ISIS is known for its cruelty and bloodiness. Dozens of people are killed at a time and public executions become common as well as crucifixions and other savage acts under the rule of ISIS. It was first build as Jama'at al-Tawhid wal-Jihad and known as al-Qaeda in Iraq and now it has influenced not only the Middle East but the whole world.
Though having a short history, ISIS has grown rapidly in the past decades and is continuing to expand its influence. The following factors are considered to have fostered the rapid growth of ISIS. First, the withdrawal of U.S. Troops leads to the inundated of terrorist organizations. With the existence of the troops, the terrorists’ activities can be limited and its growth can slow down. The U.S. Troops started to withdraw in Iraq in 2010 and completed by the end of 2011, finishing as soon as possible. It is thought be good for the the Iraqis but somehow it means that there will be no powerful force to pin down ISIS. Second, the sectarian policy carried out by Mr. Maliki for eight years influences the ideology. As the chairman of Iraq's ruling Dawa party, Mr. Maliki governs against Sunni sectarianism and his policy mistakes of Kurdish autonomous region finally turns to Sunni sectarianism against the government. In 2014, his seeking re-election prompted an outcry for his leadership and under this circumstance the Islamic State seizes the opportunity to grow faster. The sectarian policy splits the three main sectarians of Iraq and thus promotes the growth of ISIS. Third, Syrian civil war provides a better environment for Islamic State. Influenced by the Arab Spring, there comes a movement to overthrow the Assad regime in Syria, supporting by countries like the United States, Turkey. The Syrian opposition is supported to oppose to their current President Bashar al-Assad. However, since Syria and Iraq have a long boarder line and the Syrian army has lost the control of the eastern boarder where the Islamic State is. As a result, the Islamic State developed into Syria and occupied some districts. Finally, the leaders of ISIS are diplomatic and tactful. They take advantage of the Sunnis’ grievance over the Iraq government and reunite the former Ba'ath Party members and former Iraq governors who are at the political management. This helps to consolidate their regimes. They also recruit Moslem across the world and attract the young people to join the holy war. They are good at controlling the occupied areas and dealing with politics. Therefore, the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria develop rapidly in the past few years.
However, the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria is not easy to beat or control regardless of its cruelty. To begin with, ISIS is not simply a terrorist group; it is a terrorist military and an ambitious government power. Their leaders are well educated, many of whom are from other countries, especially the European countries, and thus know a lot about the western world. In addition, ISIS is amply supported with funds and has its mass base. It is said to be one of the richest terrorist organizations with the control of dozens of oilfields in Iraq and Syria. Furthermore, it is hard to control ISIS through air raids. They are excelled at anti-surveillance, which makes the American troops can hardly defeat. Last but not least, the opponents are not united enough to fight against ISIS. Countries that involve in the fight are thinking about their own interest first and find it hard to coordinate and unify in terms of the distribution of combat mission. Thus, it will take a long way to go for the problem of ISIS.
