Also, my attitude towards academic writing shifted, by and large. In this essay, I intend to narrate in detail how I improved my writing skills and to which extent I have changed my writing philosophy and attitudes.

For instance, when I was arguing for the omnipresence of Panopticism in my essay of “Panopticism”, after putting forward the comparison of surveillance and discipline between China’s and the United States’ classrooms, as a supporting idea, I added in the ending of the essay that “More and more people are feeling free to update themselves in their social circles among school mates and the big data on these sites have been taken advantage of by government agencies on the pretext of containing crimes. However, as a matter of fact, they are watching, monitoring and controlling us, making people’s privacy have no place to hide. This looks exactly like the way Panopticism works.” (Panopticism, Feng Qiu,9)
Since my essay’s main concern is about relation between school setting and Panopticism, and I had successfully demonstrated the existence of surveillance and discipline in the schools in China and the United States, in order to strengthen my point of view that Panopticism is everywhere, it seems to be useful to extend to settings of Panopticism to the society as a whole. However, I was aware that this argument was not the main concern of my essay and presented it in a short passage.
Thus, in my current standpoint of view, a good academic writing framework lies in the appropriate balance and correspondence between arguments and examples. Once beginners get used to it, this framework does not service as an external constraint or requirement imposed on them any longer, rather, it is a natural way of academic writing evented by our forerunners

However, my attitude towards citations changed when I was doing research about the American Civil War. My main concerns about the Civil War were about the role of the African-American played in the Civil War and the influence of the Civil War on the status of them. When I learned from the book “A People and A Nation” that at the ending of the Civil War, the 13th Amendment to the American Constitution made slavery unconstitutional, I came up with a question whether there are any other Amendments concerned with the African-American. Driven by my curiosity and the facility from the citations on the book, I had access to the Amendments as a whole. As a result, it was surprising for me to find that other subsequent Amendments also played roles in improving the status of the African-American. The 15th Amendment which granted the African-American’s right to vote is a concrete case (Amendments to the Constitution, Amendment 15th). That was the first time for me to find the usefulness of citations! Citations are not only a way to avoid plagiarism but also a way to help readers to have a further understanding of the background information about the issues. In addition, according to psychology, one of the reason why people are always neglect something is that he or she turn a negative attitude to what he or she is supposed to do. Thus, it is necessary for beginners to cultivate a positive attitude towards academic writing. Thanks to this course, the style of academic writing has been one of my “writing instincts”. If I had taken this course in an earlier time, I might have written essays of other course in a smoother and professional way.

As a result, after finishing the draft of my paper, I had to refer to the list of requirements of academic writing and revise my essay according to them. Thus, I had to delete many details of the cases which I made many efforts to narrate, or to attach convincing examples to my points of view. For instance, when I’m writing my essay, “Children Fairy Tales Stories”, my main argument was, there are many variations of the story of “Little Red Cap”, and those different versions focus mainly on the shifts from childhood innocence to adulthood experiences, which tell children the moral to be remembered.
However, when I was presenting the details of those versions, I narrated too much and some of my comments were not related to my arguments. For example, when I was presenting “The Story of Grandmother” and moralized that the girl was punished because of her innocence and her grandmother’s and mother’s negligence, I added that the cat was also responsible for such a tragedy. “The cat could have warned her instead of just sneer at her on side, or as a cat it cannot actually speak to little girl, but it can even just messed up everything on the table to stop the little girl from eating and drinking her grandmother’s flesh and blood”(“Children Fairy Tales Stories”, Feng Qiu, 3)
The problem is, my argument was primarily dealing with affairs involved around human relationships. That was, as what has been mentioned above, children’s innocence and their relationships with adults, rather than relationship between animals and humans. My flaw in my argument was that I involved in the relationship between human and animal when I imagined that that cat should have done something to stop the child. Even though fairy tales stories are always concerned with the relationship between human beings and animals, it seems nonsense to moralize that the cat should have done something to help the child, as far as the topic of this essay is concerned.
What’s worse, I put forward another point which looks like a secondary argument of this essay, but was actually irrelevant to my argument. After claiming that the cat should have done something to prevent the child from being hurt by the wolf, I said, “This short paragraph in the story ironically describes a situation in the society in which there are certain groups of people like to being a back seat driver, always accusing and blaming others when they doing something wrong instead of warning or actually helping them.”(“Children Fairy Tales Stories”, Feng Qiu,3) However, even assuming the cat failed to stop the child from being hurt, it was not relevant to the situation of being a back seat driver, since the cat had never accused or blamed the child for his innocence. Even though I struggled to write my essays in an academic way by deleting details or arguments which were neither serving as standpoints of my main argument nor relevant to the topic before handing in it, I made mistakes as when has been mentioned above. Thus, at the beginning, this way of writing was a nightmare for me, and I spent much more time on academic writing than my fellows did.
But, as time goes by, I’ am getting used to this frame of writing. The format of “Standpoints-examples” seems to be a natural way of writing for me. Whenever I deliver my standpoint of view, convincing cases occur to me subsequently, or whenever I am attaching examples to my argument, I would rethink whether they would serve to support my point of view.
The most important progress on my writing skills is that I am able to discriminate the irrelevant arguments and wiped them out from my essays, and that I am able to put less emphasis and descriptions on secondary point of view. For instance, when I was arguing for the omnipresence of Panopticism in my essay of “Panopticism”, after putting forward the comparison of surveillance and discipline between China’s and the United States’ classrooms, as a supporting idea, I added in the ending of the essay that “More and more people are feeling free to update themselves in their social circles among school mates and the big data on these sites have been taken advantage of by government agencies on the pretext of containing crimes. However, as a matter of fact, they are watching, monitoring and controlling us, making people’s privacy have no place to hide. This looks exactly like the way Panopticism works.” (Panopticism, Feng Qiu,9)
Since my essay’s main concern is about relation between school setting and Panopticism, and I had successfully demonstrated the existence of surveillance and discipline in the schools in China and the United States, in order to strengthen my point of view that Panopticism is everywhere, it seems to be useful to extend to settings of Panopticism to the society as a whole. However, I was aware that this argument was not the main concern of my essay and presented it in a short passage.
Thus, in my current standpoint of view, a good academic writing framework lies in the appropriate balance and correspondence between arguments and examples. Once beginners get used to it, this framework does not service as an external constraint or requirement imposed on them any longer, rather, it is a natural way of academic writing evented by our forerunners
In addition, just as what has been mentioned in my previous essay on academic writing, one of the reason why I was always missing the citation was that “because I just used other people’s ideas directly, this is mainly because the traditional style of writing in China encourage us to cite the classics also that is used in English writing skills in China”.(Academic Writing, Feng Qiu, 1) The second reason is that, I thought that citations are kind of superfluous, just like decorations in the houses which play no functional role except that of avoiding plagiarism. Since, previously, when I was reading academic paper I would rarely refer to citations, I thought that they plays little role in helping readers to understand the writings but disrupt their fluency in reading. However, my attitude towards citations changed when I was doing research about the American Civil War. My main concerns about the Civil War were about the role of the African-American played in the Civil War and the influence of the Civil War on the status of them. When I learned from the book “A People and A Nation” that at the ending of the Civil War, the 13th Amendment to the American Constitution made slavery unconstitutional, I came up with a question whether there are any other Amendments concerned with the African-American. Driven by my curiosity and the facility from the citations on the book, I had access to the Amendments as a whole. As a result, it was surprising for me to find that other subsequent Amendments also played roles in improving the status of the African-American. The 15th Amendment which granted the African-American’s right to vote is a concrete case (Amendments to the Constitution, Amendment 15th). That was the first time for me to find the usefulness of citations! Citations are not only a way to avoid plagiarism but also a way to help readers to have a further understanding of the background information about the issues. After that day, my attitudes towards citations changed and I didn’t neglect citing once I was using ideas from others, hoping that readers would have deepening understanding of my essays and extended information, if they referred to my citations. Naturally, I don’t think it a hard and useless labor to cite references
My conclusion is that academic writing lies in habituation and a proper attitude towards writing. For beginners, reoccurring practices are necessary, since it is the best way to get used to the format and style of academic writing. In addition, according to psychology, one of the reason why people are always neglect something is that he or she turn a negative attitude to what he or she is supposed to do. Thus, it is necessary for beginners to cultivate a positive attitude towards academic writing. Thanks to this course, the style of academic writing has been one of my “writing instincts”. If I had taken this course in an earlier time, I might have written essays of other course in a smoother and professional way.
