Stress is a special psychological state with a series of psychological changes and physiological changes. It often occurs when there are demands on one’s body and mind(56). In principle, stress can be divided into three stages: the alarm stage, resistance stage and exhaustion stage(60). According to American psychology association, there are different kinds of stress, including stress as a result of a natural reaction and chronic stress existed for a long period of time(Apa.org., 2017). It can also be divided into positive stress or eustress and negative stress or distress(56). Symptoms of stress can have an influence on people’s body, thoughts and feelings, and behavior(Mayo Clinic Staff,2017 & stress, org, 2017). Thus, in this research, it is to have a discussion of some different effect on the human body, emotions, and behavior caused by those different type of stress.
If a stress is controlled in a moderate degree, this moderate stress has a positive effect on physical and mental health, and social health. It is because that it can play a good stimulus role in daily life, work, study and other aspects. According to American psychology association, proper stress can provide a motivation for one person to perform well in a job interview or learning(Apa.org., 2017). According to an article written by Ann Pietrangelo and Medically Reviewed by George Krucik, MD, MBA, stress existing during a short period of time can help people to deal with difficult situations(Pietrangelo, 2014). And if there is not any stress at all, people will become lazy, and boring. This is extremely unfavorable for physical and mental health, work, study and so on.
But on the other hand, excessive stress is harmful to human health. Prolonged stress and stress beyond certain level can impact people’s health negatively (Bressert, 2017& 56). When one experience over stress, the usual symptoms are that they are easy to lose temper, have high blood pressure, faster heart rate, less food intake , dizziness, headache, dry mouth, sweating, malaise, hand tremor, irregular menstruation, memory loss, speech stuttering, slow thinking, and mental disorders and so on(stress org, 2017). It can lead to change in behavior such as eating too much or eating too little, more anger, overuse of drug or alcohol, exercising less, sleep problems and so on(Mayo Clinic Staff, 2017). And altered behavior in turn enhance the psychological stress and leads to worse working and study performance, which leads to the forming of a vicious circle over time. Those unhealthy behavior can further play a role in fueling the incidence of physical and mental disease. If one is in a state of extreme stress for a long period of time, it make the body's immune system decreased, leading to one person more easily caught up by illness(Bressert, 2017). Thus, it can be seen that bacterial infections and viral infections are associated with excessive stressful stimuli. In addition, persistent and over stress can lead to a series of negative emotions, like anxiety, restlessness, less motivation or focus, anger, sadness or depression ( Mayo Clinic Staff, 2017). Also, chronic stress may influence the social health in a negative manner. According to Mayo Clinic Staff, stress may lead to change in behavior, such as tobacco use, and social withdrawal (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2017). Those behavir can not only affect individuals, but also serious social health problems.
