A speech for a character story
Hello everyone. Today the topic of my presentation is about THE WARS OF HUMANITY. You might be curious that how come the war this most anti-human stuff becomes a part of humanity. In my research on American war films, however, I found that it does act as the factor of humanity actually. Now, let us start.
People hate wars. In wars, people were killed. Families were turned down. Civilizations were in ruins. Wars are the monster that out of control. The complete overthrow of human decency developed over the years. Have you ask yourself, why there are wars?
According to some people, the history of human is a history of wars. Though wars come at heavy cost of lost of tens of thousands of people’s lives, wars open the doorways to the a brand new world. Only in the wars when people feel the deepest pressures of probing into the very existence of people themselves, and therefore in a sense, it is the wars and the noble questioning of the essence of life that outline people’s being on this plant.
I guess that’s why there are so much American war films all the time. Let’s see are you a real American war films fan? How many of these films you can tell the names? These films are “A bridge too far,” “Black hawk down,” “Courage under fire,” “The first blood,” “The longest day,” “Top gun,” and “Transformer.” Some of it reflects the fact, some the fantasy, some the weapon, some the mission, some the courage, some the technique.
What are the roles these films taking in the history? As what is described in a Catalogue of Films, “the war film” is the film depicts mainly the story of wars, and focus on people’s destiny in wars. Then, let’s us dig in the history of American war films itself. The ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT is believed as the first war film of the U.S. As the showcase of social ideology, this film indicates a strong tendency of anti-war attitude. By its emphasis on individualism, it denies the necessity of participation in wars.
But there is also the example of how the earliest American war films of the U.S. romanizes the war. By the release of American war films which holds positive view towards wars like Wings in 1927, and Hell’s Angles in 1930 depicting the passionate life of air force soldiers during WWI, many young American start to have interests to join the army. And therefore the crucial effect of how American war films affect people in the way as propaganda was no sooner realized by the American military.
One of the early successful example of these intension was the authority documentary Why We Fight. It reflects the special social background of the U.S. in WWII, during which people, the Hollywood and the government worked together. A series of pro-America American war films were produced during this time. For instance, Marshall also approved the shooting of film, Why We Fight, on the purpose of war propaganda.
But you know, what people experienced I the war was definitely not the rosy picture in those positive film. Just imagine how people would feel in the gap between the blue picture drown by the authority and the cruel reality. If you were those audiences, how would you feel? You might think what the hell are these lies. So, it was natural that American war films lost its charm and audiences went into two extreme gradually, to the warship zealot, or the anti-war hippies.
As the result, the honeymoon of the authority and the Hollywood ended. I would like to categorize the afterwards American war films into three sorts. One of them is still showing the courage and righteous of American soldiers. One of them is aiming at revealing the dark and corrupted side of the war. Another is pure antiwar film genre.
However, whatever genre of films at the end falls on the story of people, so do the American war films. Apocalypse Now, Platoon, Saving private Ryan, and even the Pearl Harbor, which is named after the war site, are actually all about people in wars.
One of the examples is the Back Hawk Down. It avoids the one-sided advertising of the courage of American soldiers, but focuses on the brotherhood among the individuals who participated in the rescue mission in the Somalia. This operation on the contrast wins support of the audience for its natural way of story telling.
Whatever effect the war films achieve, it could not change the cruel nature of wars. The wars are cruel and dirty, though some sparkle of humanity in the war distinguish it as the “good war.” At the end the war reveals people’s nature. At the same time, the war films attract people, but they also annoy people. However, as what we can see by reviewing its course of development, it is all about people.
Thank you for listening.
