In my point of view, culture is the distinctive language, behavior, concepts, and ideology that formed by a particular group of people. It differs from countries, races, religions, or even communities.

I came from a traditional family of Chinese culture, in which most people hold the mind that their children’s life will be determined by one examination - the national college entrance examination. Chinese culture also complies with a strict hierarchy. People are accustomed to obeying authorities. In schools, students are not allowed to call teachers’ names. You have to raise up your hand in a standard pose and get the permission first to ask teacher questions in class. In addition, collectivism is always over individualism in China. Individuals have to sacrifice themselves to meet the need of their groups when they conflict with each other.

American culture is quite different from Chinese culture. During the first month I moved to America, I was surprised to find that Americans greeted strangers on the street. There were always people suddenly greeted me as “How’re you” or “Hello” when I was walking on a street, taking an elevator, or being in a shopping mall. That was weird to me because in China we never greet strangers in public places, except salesman. Such kind of behavior would be interpreted as having an ulterior motive, which should be alert to. I thought those guys might want something from me, so I never answered and always stepped away, avoiding eye contacts.

But later I was told that such greetings were very normal in America. People greeted everywhere to anyone. All I need to do was to give them a short answer like “good” or just a smile. At that time, I realized how awkward I reacted to those greetings. When I thought those guys were weird, I might seem to be rude in their eyes too.

Then I searched for articles about why these differences happened and what was the assumptions behind it.

One theory is that Americans tend to trust people when they first meet them, based on the presumption of innocence, a concept that is derived from US judicial system. It means that Americans assume strangers are kind, open, and harmless, unless the latter do something to prove that they are not. Such kind of assumption encourage Americans to participate more in social communication than others. While in China, presumption of guilt principle has been implemented for a very long time. It has been rooted in people’s mind. That’s why people don’t easily trust others, especially strangers. They are regarded as dangerous and unpredictable with motives.

After knowing the differences of these two cultures, I felt that my response to those stranger greetings was not appropriate and rude to others in America, and it might cause misunderstandings. It built barriers rather than links to communicate with others. So I decided to change my mind and get used to the new culture environment. Now I always answer or smile to those greetings. Sometimes I can even start a chat.

Based on my experiences, when you move to a new culture, do some homework about the culture differences in advance will definitely help to promote a successful or rewarding intercultural encounter. Then you need to keep an open and lenient mind all the time to get used to the new environment quickly.
