Orientalism is a book in nineteenth Century, western countries in the east world has no basis, like the east out of the western world, there is a strong prejudice against Arabia - Islamic world people and culture. Edward said that western culture of Asia and the Middle East and the long-term romantic wrong impression, and provide an excuse for Europe and the United States colonialism. This book has become a classic and theoretical basis of the post colonial discourse. So I can study many controversy in if Asian art really belongs to Asia between the west and the east from this book.
Orientalism is intended to refer to the near and far east of western social culture, language and cultural studies. Orientalism is a style of thought based upon an ontonogical and epistemological distinction made between “ the Orient” and ( most of the time) “ the Occident” (Said, 2). It can be translated into western writers, designers and artists of the Oriental imitation and description. It can also refer to the appreciation of the oriental culture of sympathy. Since twentieth century, with the Westerners, Orientalism has been described on the negative meaning of Oriental Studies. Descriptive expression of the East, without exception, will be to the east of the Mediterranean to the various countries of the social life of a variety of objects, and the way to deal with the nature of the stereotype. The first one is hostile: focusing on other threats and nature. The second one is a foreign concern other attractive, for example, boudoir veils, geisha and Oriental women are portrayed as debauchery, passive and very exotic. The orient was almost an European invention, and had been sinc antiquity a place of romance, exotic beings, haunting memories and landscapes, remarkable experiences ( Said 40). So in my opinion, to some extent, the value and culture between the east and the west may contribute to this problomatic thinking.
In some of the radical works, the East is even regarded to be the opposite of the West. Edward Vodil Said, who examined the Orientalism in Foucault's concept of discourse, and to explain how the discourse rights play a role, how to produce right understanding, and understanding of the "Orient" itself as a manifestation of social rights. In my view, the problematic point lies in the definition of this word. There exist different views of the understanding of the word, which leads to the controvercy of the belong of Asian art.
In the past, Europeans have mentioned the East in the East, which refers to Asia and other places, including the Near East, Middle East, Far East, and even Russia and the former East Rome empire. The geographical and temporal scope of Asian art far outstrips that found in other traditional segments of art history, most of which have boundaries spanning a handful of countries and a handful of centuries at most ( Brown & Hutton, 5). In Contemporary English, the word of the East (Oriental), mostly refers to the narrow sense of the East Asian cultural regions, not including India, West Asia and other regions, than previously referred to the scope of the small. From my perspective, this is a problmative point that the geography is not so clear that they can not make sure that whether these arts belong to Asia or not.
Edward said that Orientalism belongs to the construction of Western products, establishing a clear distinction for things. Edward said that there was no relationship between the construction, discussion and the true face of those countries. Although westerners should recognize the East, most of them jump out this paper box.
Said in 1978 in his controversial masterpiece "Orientalism", clear expression and publicize this point of view, to analyze the European Center for Islamic Studies. So I think maybe some scientists hold the view that Asia is not a natural land. It is discovered by the Europe. So the arts in Asia to some extent belong to the West, though I do not think so.
Tibet and Nepal remain caught between India and China;Myanmar, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia remain secondary, with their art often seen as derivative of China or India. Gradually these regions have gained more scholarly attention, and as they do, they reshape the fabric of Asian art in productive ways ( Brown & Hutton, 8).
In my opinion, from reading these two articles, there are many differences between the Asian countries so they can not treat different things as the same and give a title- Asian art. First, the geographical and temporal scope of Asia is not clear. Second, the culture of different continents is different. Third, the boundaries of Asia and Asian art have shifted over the past century. Fourth, some Asian countries such as Korea, the Himalayan regions, Mongolia and Manchuia, Central Asia and the Afghan’s cultural region is different from the canonical regions of India, China, and Japan so the arts of these countries can’t be lumped together. At last, it is now abundantly clear that no central, coherent narrative can incorporate all of Asian art and Western art ( Brown & Hutton, 12).
During the following weeks, we can regard the Asian Art as a national art and view them from some different angles. I think we can try our best to touch the Asian Art, to get close to Asian culture, to communicate with Asian people in order to know more and thoroughly about this class. I am a Chinese person so I think I have some advantages in this class. And I hope I can help others by sharing my own experience.
