Idea Borrowing in the Film/TV industry: A Gradual Process and Its Significance

By the end of the 20th century, the termination of the Cold War has made the US the only superpower in the world. The tense atmosphere in the 80s was quickly replaced by fascination of the unexplored world, and the ancient cultures of Asia became the fascination of the US public. The increased traveling and mass migration aided the trend in creating the image of a “sizzling hot east.” There is a gradual process in the borrowing of Asian ideas in the America film industry. One of the initiators of the borrowing was the film by Ang Lee in 2000, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Despite the Asian director and cast, the film was an American production (16), which would be made entirely different were it to be a Chinese one. The plot of the film and the characters in the film was nothing related to the mainstream culture of the US, yet it was a huge success. The beautiful scenery, poetic Kung Fu fighting, and the eastern philosophy fresh to the western audience became an inspiration for the US film and TV industry, thus started their exploration of the borrowing of Asian ideas.

After Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, the once exotic Kung Fu fighting had become the norm for the American audience. The identity of the film by Ang Lee was entirely Chinese, but many of the elements from Asian films were being applied into the American films, and addition of these once exotic elements brought new blood into the TV and film industry. In the early TV shows, such as Kim Possible and Power Rangers, addition of Kung Fu elements had added to the expressiveness of the scene and gained popularity soon (17). The once violent and clumsy fighting scenes were filmed from a whole new fashion: there is the unique beauty in fighting, as shown in many Asian films, that treated the exchange of attacks and defenses as something to be choreographed. The Kill Bill series and Mr. and Mrs. Smith (19) are both examples of incorporating Kung Fu elements into the western setting seamlessly and comfortably.

The borrowing of ideas from eastern and western cultures have always been mutual. The borrowing of Hollywood ideas into making Chinese movies can be traced back to the establishment of the Hong Kong film industry. It is an important form of cultural communication, which created the effect of multiplication instead of addition. When an artist or producer is exposed to one idea from other cultures, he or she would have more than one way to adapt that element into films and TV episodes of their own country. Thus, the language of the film/TV has been significantly enriched and diversified by the borrowing. As the level of understanding of a different culture goes higher with year of borrowing, the quality of production increases as well. For instance, the addition of the imaginative scenes that defies the law of gravity in the Matrix series succeeded in dramatizing the plot and adding to the thrills of the films. Animation films and TV episodes, such as Mulan, Kong Fu Panda and Avatar, the Last Airbender (19), are completely set in the eastern background, which is a further step from Kill Bill series and Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Different from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, the characters in these cartoons carry more of a mix of the eastern and western traits. The balance of cultural elements in these films have shown that integration has successfully occurred in the film and TV industry, much earlier than in the real world.

Overall, the borrowing of ideas from different cultures has positive implications on the development of the film language and communication between cultures and peoples. Despite the misinterpretations that happen occasionally, efforts in the borrowing and diversification should be praised in general. In the world being shaped by the forces of globalization, clashes of cultures and different beliefs often result in conflicts and animosity. Ignorance and stereotyping can be the biggest sources of fear and hostility. Thus, the borrowing of ideas can serve as cultural buffers for people from different cultures to establish mutual understanding, interest and respect.
