エステル記２章

これらの後、アハシュエロス王の怒りがおさまった時、彼はワシテのことを思い出して、彼女の行った事と彼女に対して定められた事を思い出しました。
2 そこで、王に仕える家来達は言いました。
「王のために、見目麗しい若い乙女を捜し求めさせなさい！
3 王はその国のすべての地方に長官を配置して、すべての若い乙女をシュシャンの城、すなわち、女達の家、王の侍従で女達の番人であるヘガイのもとに集めさせて、その化粧に必要な品々｛軟膏｝を彼らに与えさせなさい！」
4 そして、王の気に入る乙女をワシテの代わりに王妃とさせなさい！」
そのことは王を喜ばせたので、王はそのとおりにしました。
5 城のシュシャンにあるユダヤ人がいて、その名をベニヤミン人キシュの子シメイの子ヤイルの子モルデカイと言いました。
6 バビロンの王ネブカデネザルが連れ去ったユダの王エコーニヤと一緒に連れ去られた捕虜と一緒にエルサレムから連れ去られた者です。
7 彼はハダサ、すなわち、その伯父の娘エステルを育てましたが、彼女には父もなく、母もなく、乙女は美しい姿をしていて、見目麗しく、父も母も死んだので、モルデカイは彼女を自分の娘にしていました。
8 そこで、王の詔書と勅令とが公布されて、多くの乙女達がシュシャンの城に集められて、ヘガイのもとに行くと、エステルは王の家に連れて行かれて、女達の管理者ヘガイのもとに置かれました。
9 乙女は彼を喜ばせ、彼の好意を得たので、彼はすぐに彼女の軟膏と、その分け前と、王の家から彼女に与えるべき七人の乙女を与えて、彼女とその乙女達を女達の家の最も良い所に進めさせました。
10 エステルはその民も、その種族も知らせませんでした。
モルデカイが彼女にそれを話してはならないと命じていたからです。
11 モルデカイは毎日、女達の家の宮の前を歩いて、エステルの様子と彼女の行く末を知りました。
12 さて、すべての乙女がアハシュエロス王のもとに行く番が来た時、女達のために規則に従って十二か月間、つまり、ミルラの油で六か月、甘いにおいで六か月、その他の女達の軟膏を塗った日数が完了しました。
12 おとめ達は、婦人の規則に従って、十二か月の期間が終わって後、ひとりずつ順番にアハシュエロス王のところに、入って行くことになっていた。これは、準備の期間が、六か月は没薬の油で、次の六か月は香料と婦人の化粧に必要な品々で化粧することで終わることになっていたからである
13 乙女が王のもとに入って行く時、彼女の望むものは何でも与えられ、彼女とともに女達の家から王の家へ行くことができました。
14 乙女は夕方行って、明日は第二の女達の家に帰り、王の侍従で、側女を管理しているシャアシュガズのもとに帰りました。
王が彼女を喜び、その名を呼ばれるまでは、彼女はもう王のもとに来ることはありませんでした。
15 さて、モルデカイのおじアビハイルの娘で彼女を自分の娘としたエステルの番が来て王のもとに入った時、彼女は王の侍従で女達の番人ヘガイが定めたこと以外には何も要求しませんでした。
こうして、エステルは彼女を見るすべての者の目の前で好意を持たれるようになりました。
16 そこで、エステルはアハシュエロス王のもとに連れて行かれて、王の治世の第七年の第十の月、すなわちテベトの月に、王の館に入りました。
17 王はエステルをすべての女よりも愛し、すべての乙女よりも王の目の前に恵みと好意を得たので、王冠を彼女の頭にかぶらせて、ワシテに代えて彼女を王妃にしました。
18 それから、王はその諸侯とその家来達に大宴会を開いて、エステルの宴会を開き、また、地方には休日を与えて｛放免し｝、王の恩恵に従って贈り物をしました。
19 乙女達が二度目に集められて、モルデカイが王の門に座った時、
20 エステルはモルデカイが命じたように、まだ自分の種族も国民も知らせてはいませんでした。
エステルはモルデカイの命令を、モルデカイのもとで育った時のように実行していたからです。
21 その頃、モルデカイが王の門に座っていると、門を守っていた王の侍従のうちのビグタンとテレシュの二人が腹を立てて、アハシュエロス王に手をかけて殺そうとしました。
22 このことはモルデカイに知られて、王妃エステルに告げたので、エステルはモルデカイの名で王にそのことを告げました。
23 このことについて調べが行われて、そうであることがわかったので、二人は木につるされました。
そのことは王の前で年代記の書に記されました。

 

1 この出来事の後、アハシュエロス王の憤りがおさまると、王は、ワシュティのこと、彼女のしたこと、また、彼女に対して決められたことを思い出した。
2 そのとき、王に仕える若い者達は言いました。「王のために容姿の美しい未婚の娘達を捜しましょう。
3 王は、王国のすべての州に役人を任命し、容姿の美しい未婚の娘達をみな、シュシャンの城の婦人部屋に集めさせ、女達の監督官である王の宦官ヘガイの管理のもとに置き、化粧に必要な品々を彼女達に与えるようにしてください。
4 そして、王のお心にかなうおとめをワシュティの代わりに王妃としてください。」このことは王の心にかなったので、彼はそのようにした。
5 シュシャンの城にひとりのユダヤ人がいた。その名をモルデカイといって、ベニヤミン人キシュの子シムイの子ヤイルの子であった。
6 このキシュは、バビロンの王ネブカデネザルが捕らえ移したユダの王エコヌヤといっしょに捕らえ移された捕囚の民とともに、エルサレムから捕らえ移された者であった。
7 モルデカイはおじの娘ハダサ、すなわち、エステルを養育していた。彼女には父も母もいなかったからである。このおとめは、姿も顔だちも美しかった。彼女の父と母が死んだとき、モルデカイは彼女を引き取って自分の娘としたのである。
8 王の命令、すなわちその法令が伝えられて、多くのおとめ達がシュシャンの城に集められ、ヘガイの管理のもとに置かれたとき、エステルも王宮に連れて行かれて、女達の監督官ヘガイの管理のもとに置かれた。
9 このおとめは、ヘガイの心にかない、彼の好意を得た。そこで、彼は急いで化粧に必要な品々とごちそうを彼女に与え、また王宮から選ばれた七人の侍女を彼女にあてがった。そして、ヘガイは彼女とその侍女達を、婦人部屋の最も良い所に移した。
10 エステルは自分の民族をも、自分の生まれをも明かさなかった。モルデカイが、明かしてはならないと彼女に命じておいたからである。
11 モルデカイは毎日婦人部屋の庭の前を歩き回り、エステルの安否と、彼女がどうされるかを知ろうとしていた。
12 おとめ達は、婦人の規則に従って、十二か月の期間が終わって後、ひとりずつ順番にアハシュエロス王のところに、入って行くことになっていた。これは、準備の期間が、六か月は没薬の油で、次の六か月は香料と婦人の化粧に必要な品々で化粧することで終わることになっていたからである。
13 このようにして、おとめが王のところに入って行くとき、おとめの願うものはみな与えられ、それを持って婦人部屋から王宮に行くことができた。
14 おとめは夕方入って行き、朝になると、ほかの婦人部屋に帰っていた。そこは、そばめ達の監督官である王の宦官シャアシュガズの管理のもとにあった。そこの女は、王の気に入り、指名されるのでなければ、二度と王のところには行けなかった。
15 さて、モルデカイが引き取って、自分の娘とした彼のおじアビハイルの娘エステルが、王のところに入って行く順番が来たとき、彼女は女達の監督官である王の宦官ヘガイの勧めたもののほかは、何一つ求めなかった。こうしてエステルは、彼女を見るすべての者から好意を受けていた。
16 エステルがアハシュエロス王の王宮に召されたのは、王の治世の第七年の第十の月、すなわちテベテの月であった。
17 王はほかのどの女達よりもエステルを愛した。このため、彼女はどの娘達よりも王の好意と恵みを受けた。こうして、王はついに王冠を彼女の頭に置き、ワシュティの代わりに彼女を王妃とした。
18 それから、王はすべての首長と家臣達の大宴会、すなわち、エステルの宴会を催し、諸州には休日を与えて、王の勢力にふさわしい贈り物を配った。
19 娘達が二度目に集められたとき、モルデカイは王の門のところにすわっていた。
20 エステルは、モルデカイが彼女に命じていたように、まだ自分の生まれをも、自分の民族をも明かしていなかった。エステルはモルデカイに養育されていた時と同じように、彼の言いつけに従っていた。
21 そのころ、モルデカイが王の門のところにすわっていると、入口を守っていた王のふたりの宦官ビグタンとテレシュが怒って、アハシュエロス王を殺そうとしていた。
22 このことがモルデカイに知れたので、彼はこれを王妃エステルに知らせた。エステルはこれをモルデカイの名で王に告げた。
23 このことが追求されて、その事実が明らかになったので、彼らふたりは木にかけられた。このことは王の前の年代記の書に記録された。

After these things, when the wrath of king Ahasuerus was assuaged, he remembered Vashti, and what she had done, and what was decreed against her.
2 Then said the king's servants that ministered unto him: 'Let there be sought for the king young virgins fair to look on;
3 and let the king appoint officers in all the provinces of his kingdom, that they may gather together all the fair young virgins unto Shushan the castle, to the house of the women, unto the custody of Hegai the king's chamberlain, keeper of the women; and let their ointments be given them;
4 and let the maiden that pleaseth the king be queen instead of Vashti.' And the thing pleased the king; and he did so. 
5 There was a certain Jew in Shushan the castle, whose name was Mordecai the son of Jair the son of Shimei the son of Kish, a Benjamite,
6 who had been carried away from Jerusalem with the captives that had been carried away with Jeconiah king of Judah, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away.
7 And he brought up Hadassah, that is, Esther, his uncle's daughter; for she had neither father nor mother, and the maiden was of beautiful form and fair to look on; and when her father and mother were dead, Mordecai took her for his own daughter.
8 So it came to pass, when the king's commandment and his decree was published, and when many maidens were gathered together unto Shushan the castle, to the custody of Hegai, that Esther was taken into the king's house, to the custody of Hegai, keeper of the women.
9 And the maiden pleased him, and she obtained kindness of him; and he speedily gave her her ointments, with her portions, and the seven maidens, who were meet to be given her out of the king's house; and he advanced her and her maidens to the best place in the house of the women.
10 Esther had not made known her people nor her kindred; for Mordecai had charged her that she should not tell it.
11 And Mordecai walked every day before the court of the women's house, to know how Esther did, and what would become of her.
12 Now when the turn of every maiden was come to go in to king Ahasuerus, after that it had been done to her according to the law for the women, twelve months--for so were the days of their anointing accomplished, to wit, six months with oil of myrrh, and six month with sweet odours, and with other ointments of the women--
13 when then the maiden came unto the king, whatsoever she desired was given her to go with her out of the house of the women unto the king's house.
14 In the evening she went, and on the morrow she returned into the second house of the women, to the custody of Shaashgaz, the king's chamberlain, who kept the concubines; she came in unto the king no more, except the king delighted in her, and she were called by name.
15 Now when the turn of Esther, the daughter of Abihail the uncle of Mordecai, who had taken her for his daughter, was come to go in unto the king, she required nothing but what Hegai the king's chamberlain, the keeper of the women, appointed. And Esther obtained favour in the sight of all them that looked upon her.
16 So Esther was taken unto king Ahasuerus into his house royal in the tenth month, which is the month Tebeth, in the seventh year of his reign.
17 And the king loved Esther above all the women, and she obtained grace and favour in his sight more than all the virgins; so that he set the royal crown upon her head, and made her queen instead of Vashti.
18 Then the king made a great feast unto all his princes and his servants, even Esther's feast; and he made a release to the provinces, and gave gifts, according to the bounty of the king.
19 And when the virgins were gathered together the second time, and Mordecai sat in the king's gate--
20 Esther had not yet made known her kindred nor her people; as Mordecai had charged her; for Esther did the commandment of Mordecai, like as when she was brought up with him-- 
21 in those days, while Mordecai sat in the king's gate, two of the king's chamberlains, Bigthan and Teresh, of those that kept the door, were wroth, and sought to lay hands on the king Ahasuerus.
22 And the thing became known to Mordecai, who told it unto Esther the queen; and Esther told the king thereof in Mordecai's name.
23 And when inquisition was made of the matter, and it was found to be so, they were both hanged on a tree; and it was written in the book of the chronicles before the king.
