'Hu intervenes' after traffic death sparks massive student protest
(South China Morning Post 2003.01.09 Updated at 6.30pm)
FONG TAKHO
Vice-President Hu Jintao has reportedly intervened to defuse a protest by Anhui students said to be one of the largest on the mainland since the 1989 Tiananmen crackdown.
Wuming Forum, an Internet chatroom run by the Hefei Industrial University posted a message claiming Mr Hu has promised that a truck driver alleged to have injured or killed several students would be harshly dealt with.
Thousands of angry students demonstrated after the incident demanding that the government act to deal with the traffic problems near the enterance to the university.
The Anhui government would not confirm or deny the report of Mr Hu's involvement and the official media was also silent on the protests. In response to a South China Morning Post enquiry, the Anhui Government issued a statement saying that 'the provincial and municipal government have attached great importance to the demands of the students''.
Johnny Lau Yui-siu, a Hong Kong-based China watcher, said the massive protests that erupted in Hefei are a sign that the students born under the one-child policy era in 1980s are outspoken in voicing their grievances.
