「Heroes of Might and Magic III」の拡張パック「Armageddon's Blade」のキャンペーン「Armageddon's Blade」のシナリオ2「Shadows of the Forest」をプレイしました。
マップサイズはM、難易度はHard、チームカラーはGreen で敵はRed となっています。今回はGelu を次のシナリオに引き継げるようです。
シナリオ開始前に、20 Marksmen か、15 Grand Elves か、10 Sharpshooters からひとつを選択します。あれ？ Sharpshooter って、今まで見たことがないような気がします。面白そうなので、興味本位でSharpshooters を選択することにします。
冒頭、まずはGelu の独白から始まります。
Messengers inform me Queen Catherine and Roland Ironfist are retreating to the Erathian border. Avlee has chosen to turn a blind eye toward the war, but have purposely left local heroes to their own will. Under the Queen's orders we are to wage a 'hit-and-run' war along the Avlee border. Our only support will be local militia hostile toward the Kreegans. Should we be captured, Erathia and Avlee will disavow any knowledge of our actions. Otherwise... this task is no different than before.
Erathia とEeofol との戦争に、Avlee はとりあえずは関わらないつもりのようですが、その地のHero がどうするかは、敢えて自由意志に任せることにしたようです。Gelu はCatherine からの命によってAvlee 国境沿いでEeofol と戦わなくてはならないのですが、その際、地元兵の協力を取り付けてゲリラ的に戦わなくてはならないようですね。
冒頭、以下のメッセージが届きます。
Gelu, early this morning you received word your special skills are needed for a daring plan. While Catherine and the Erathian forces keep the Eeofol army locked in conflict on the western border, you have been ordered to slip in through Avlee with a small guerilla force to harry the enemy there.
You have also been instructed to recruit allies from the local populace. To that end, you have set up your base camp in the city of Diasamere along the Avlee-Eeofol border. The elves there have offered shelter and aid in coming fight. The region is dotted with small garrisons and outposts. A large number of mercenaries, some of whom fought in the recent wars, call this area home. Many are loyal to Avlee, but there are those who prefer to remain neutral and will fight for that choice.
Movement, stealth, and cunning tactics will with win this Shadow War, not brute force, for the enemy is indeed powerful. Good luck!
こちらの本拠地は、マップ東部にあるRampart。Hero はLevel 1 Ranger のGelu 。周囲にはElf 、Archer 、Sharpshooter といった飛び道具系Creature がいて仲間になってくれるので、あっという間に飛び道具軍団を編成することができました。
Gelu はHero としてはそれ程強いわけではありませんが、Archer やElf をSharpshooter にアップグレードすることができるという特殊能力を持っています。アップグレードする際に、結構金がかかるんですけどね。また、攻撃力は強いものの、攻撃回数が1回なので、2回攻撃できるMarksman やGrand Elf はそのままにしておく手もありそうです。
マップ東部から北西部に向けて斜めに川が流れていて、川の向こう側がEeofol の領地になっているようです。川には何箇所か陸路が用意されていて、そこに設えられたGarrison を突破すれば敵地に侵入することができます。
しばらくは川のこちら側、Avlee 領を探索していきます。
飛び道具部隊の攻撃力はかなり強く、中立のCreature だったらほぼ無傷で倒せるのですが、いかんせん打たれ弱いので、ちょっとミスして攻撃されると損害がかなり大きくなってしまいます。敵のモラルが高いと、1ターン目でも直接殴られたりもしますしね。
とにかく序盤はお金が全然足りなくて、兵を雇うこともままなりません。序盤にArcher を大量にSharpshooter にアップグレードしたのが失敗だったかもしれません。
仕方がないので資金不足を解消するため、Gelu でEeofol 領に突入することにします。
マップの北側にあるGarrison を突破して、近くにあったInferno を攻略。Inferno のCreature はあんまり強くないと思うので割合楽なのですが、町攻めとなるとこちらの損害も大きくなるので、Gelu の飛び道具部隊の他にも戦力になる部隊を作り上げないとキツイかもしれません。'Hit-and-Run'戦法なんて、そうそうできないですしね（ひょっとして、戦闘状態になったら順番の早いCreature で殴るだけ殴ってさっさと逃げるってことなんですかね？ そんな戦い方、金が幾らあっても足りませんが）。
で、そんなことを考えながら周囲を探索していたら、敵の主力と思われるHero と交戦状態に入り、敗北してしまいました。敵の軍勢が多くなってくると、接敵するまでにCreatureを削りきれず、隣接されしまってはもう飛び道具部隊に勝ち目はないのです。うーん、どうしよう？
Inferno を攻略する直前のセーブデータからやり直します。とにかく守りに入らないでマップ上を動き回りつつ、敵の薄みを狙うことにします。強いヤツとはなるべく戦わない方向で。
基本的に取り返されるということは気にせず、端からInferno を落としていきます。幸い、敵はあんまり町に軍勢を残していないので、攻略は割と容易でした。敵地には結局4つのInferno が存在していまして、視界の確保も兼ねて、一応端から全部攻撃していきます。幾つかはすぐに取り返されますが、それでも町を確保していれば資金が溜まってきますので、ここにきてようやくある程度の軍勢を揃えることができるようになってきました。
それはそれとして、北西部にもRampart があるのですが、そこは未着手のまま敵に取られてしまいました。
北周りで本拠地に迫ってきた敵Hero に対処するためGelu も本拠地近くまで戻したのですが、敵は結局本拠地には来ずにまた北の方へと戻っていきました。ついでだったので軍勢の消耗が不安だったGelu に本拠地で蓄えていたSilver Pegasus やCentaur Captain を合流させます。Pegasus もCentaur も肉弾戦Creature としてはそんなに強い方ではありませんが、それでもある程度の肉弾戦能力も得て、Gelu の部隊も大分バランスが良くなりました。これで思い切り戦うことができそうです。
34日目、Gelu が小さな水溜りを通り過ぎたとき、どこからともなく不思議な声が聞こえてきます。Gelu が馬を下りて水溜りに近づいてみると、なんとそこに美しい女性の顔が現われたではありませんか。
"I am Ciele the Waverider. I represent the Elemental Plane of Water and am one of many called here to protect this world from those who would see it harmed. I am sending this message to you, Gelu, because your destiny lies along a similar path to ours. Beware the Dark Lord, for he is assembling a weapon of near immeasurable power."
そう告げると、その精霊――Ciele の姿は消えてしまいました。どうやらArmageddon's Blade は精霊界にも影響を及ぼし、こちらと利害関係が一致しているみたいですね。と言うことは、最近出没している精霊たちは味方である可能性が高そうですね。
戦局を単純化させるために、敵地での戦闘はほどほどにして、まずはGelu で北部から北西部の敵を叩くことにします。敵の主力は北や北西のAvlee 領をうろうろしているようなので、Gelu はまず、北西のRampart を目指します。この辺りはまだ未探索地域が広がっていますしね。
北西部に辿り着いてみたものの、Rampart 周辺に敵Hero の姿はなく、あっさりとRampart を陥落させます。Rampart だと部隊の補充ができるので楽だわぁ。
40日目、Gelu が首筋に危険なものを感じて振り返ると、そこには2フィートほどの小さな姿がありました。
"You are the one known as Gelu, are you not? Very well, I am Erdamon the Earthshaper. I have come from the Elemental Plane of Earth and have been sent to protect this world from those who would see it harm. Ciele told me you have spoken to her. I trust you have already met the minions of the Dark Lord? Excellent.
The Dark Lord has many names and many minions, the worst of which is Xeron, he who was born of man and demon. Be wary of this one, for he is most skilled in the dark arts as well as having an affinity for devilkin."
今度は土の精霊ですか。Xeron という半人半悪魔が厄介なわけですね。情報を教えてくれるのはありがたいのですが、それならもっと普通に登場して欲しいのですが。
Gelu が北部の未探索地域に踏み込んでみると、ここにもConflux が出現していました。既にRed に支配されていましたが、そんなに強いCreature もいないし、数もそれ程ではなく、割合簡単に攻略に成功します。
その間、Eeofol 領では現地調達のInferno 軍だけでやりくりしていました。町の開発にも金がかかりますし、Inferno だけではなかなか絶対的な軍勢を揃えるのは大変です。それでも、町を取ったり取られたりしつつも、4つあるInferno のうち3つを常にキープして、少しずつ有利な態勢を築いていきます。
そのうちに、4つのInferno を全て押さえることに成功。最後はこちらの町に攻めかかってきた敵の最後のHero を撃退し、Gelu を投入するまでもなくシナリオクリアとなりました。
クリア日数は１ヶ月と2週間と1日なので、43日。これも体感時間より早かったですね。長いテキストを追いかけているせいで実際にプレイしている時間が長いため、感覚が狂っているのかもしれません。
それはさておき、マップを完成させるためにクリア後もしばらく継続してプレイしていたのですが、50日目に、今度はGelu の前に炎の精霊が現われました。
"I come to speak to the half-human warrior known as Gelu, he with eyes of obsidian darkness, skin of alabaster white, and hair the color of flame. I am called Fiur the Flamewalker. I am he, born of fire, come here to protect this world from those who would harm it. A tide of growing darkness is flowing across this world, gaining momentum with every day. The one known as Xeron is a servant to the Dark Lord and is even now seeking the tools needed to build a weapon of terrible destructive power, Armageddon's Blade. My fellow Conflux heroes, Ciele and Erdamon, have secreted these tools away in a far off land. Yet this Xeron has located us anyway. He is powerful and we shall attempt to stop him, but we now fear that we cannot stop the weapon's creation. We can, however, let you know the wielder of the Blade is not invincible."
Xeron はArmageddon's Blade を造るための道具を探しています。それらは既にCiele とErdamon ――前にGelu の前に姿を現した精霊ですね――が隠してしまったのですが、それでもXeron が見つけ出すのも時間の問題だろう、というわけですね。
しかしこれ、マップ作成のためにクリア後もプレイし続けていたから見られたけど、早くクリアしすぎると情報が得られなくて話がわからなくなるんじゃないかなぁ。
で、多分もう一回精霊がやって来るんじゃないかと思ったので、またしばらく日数を経過させてみたのですが、今度は54日目に、野営地の前に現われた瀕死の男の口から、Xeron に関する情報を聞くことができました。
"There is one out there milord, a devil named Xeron ..cough.. who is the one seeking Armageddon's Blade. ..cough.. My unit was sent here by ..cough.. General Kendal to aid you. ..choke.. I am all that is left of us. Xeron is close to ..choke.. completing the Blade. He is going to use ..choke.. it to destroy ..cough.. us aaalll."
どうやらXeron はArmageddon's Blade の材料の収集を、もうじき完了してしまうようです。この命がけで連絡してくれた男はMorgan Kendal に命じられてきたTalon Brigade のメンバーらしいのですが……、えーと、それ、何だっけ？ そんなの今までに出てきた？
もうしばらく日を進めてみましたが特に情報も出てきませんでしたので、そろそろ次のシナリオに移ろうかと思います。
Shadows of the Forest
Gelu must defeat all enemies in this area using guerilla tactics. He is the only one with the skills to lead this raid, for without him all is lost. Gelu will be allowed to advance to 12th Level and carry over his skill, experience, and spells to the next scenario.
