If I were to combine study abroad and conduct research at the same time, I would like to apply for UCI Costa Rica Program and go to Costa Rica. There, my research topic would be global sustainability. Nowadays, global warming and sustainable development probably may be the most heated discussed topic. And according to one research that I have read, unsustainable development pattern in the rainforest is one of the major forces leading to global warming. Costa Rica, as a country located in the tropical areas and the intersection of Central and South America, covers an area of only 0.03% of the world's land area, but has abundant biological species. But on the other hand, in South America, there are about 41% areas that were once forests become oil palm plantations by 1989, for the huge economical value of oil palm plantations (Vijay et al, 2016, p 1). Also, during the manufacturing of oil palms, it can also release greenhouse gases. At first, through the experience of study abroad in Costa Rica, I have a chance to confirm what the research depicts happen in the rains forest in Costa Rica in person. I can see whether there is a great change of land use conversion there. In general, researches on global sustainability are depicting a very general picture from a very descriptive perspective, just like the study done by Vijay et al in 2016. They just give people cold data. But what I want to pursue is an anthropological approach. I hope to investigate the global sustainability issue by talking with the local people, and giving some interviews. For example, I will add questions like “do you have any idea about the global sustainability and global warming?”, “do you feel that is there any change of environment when the forests are gone: and “how much can you make by planting oil palms one year?” By doing this, I can not only gather some first-hand data, but also can probe into the reason that they cut down the trees and plant oil palms and the local people’s attitude towards such issue.
Studying abroad in Costa Rica can help me to carry out and explore this research topic greatly. Without being there, I can never have a chance to interact with the local people and learn about their thoughts of global sustainability and global warming. As for benefits I might expect from conducting research while abroad, it is at first a further understanding of relationship between global sustainability and global warming. Then, in addition to the understanding of phenomenon, it provides a chance to view the socioeconomic situation of Costa Rica leading to sustainable development by cutting down trees to get money and the reaction and attitudes of the locals towards such issue. Also, I can expand my thinking of research: it is not necessarily done in the labs or through reading the book, and sometimes, researchers need to view the problem in research in real context with real people. it is especially true for studies in the field of social science area.
