I'm sorry I misunderstood you

I'm sorry I misunderstood you
For all the time I believe that misunderstanding is a simple yet complicated word. After clearing the air, one may probably feels relieved, regarding unpleasure as merely a misunderstanding; yet in the process when deeply troubled by the unpleasure, one is apt to lament this visit of nuisance. In a careful consideration, misunderstanding usually happens with reason, it is actually unavoidable to spark some flame in the interaction process of people with different personality, and however, coming along this flame is a negative byproduct-misunderstanding. I took a lesson from one of my own experience before that one should never take colored eyes to look at other people around, that one should look at the human world with a kind and promising eye.

That was a rainy day with whistled wind, dirty mud and puddles were all over the road. I got up unwillingly, ate a little breakfast and went out for school. I moved with heavy steps and regretted to myself for having to wake up early and going to school. Now it was really light, there were only few students like myself and cleaners who leapt to my eyes. I could not help but complaint the horrible weather, with the sound of sweeping the road by cleaners coming into my ears now and then.

I looked forward, and saw that an old man with gray hair in ragged garments was sweeping the floor with somewhat difficulty. With the sound of fast wind and sweeping was the old cleaner's crispy cough. This caused a sense of sadness in me, poor old man! A man of age like him should not be happy and eased at home with his family around? But he…… while I was still in thinking, I noticed the old cleaner bent down and picked up a black thing. This filled me with doubt and curiosity, what on earth was the parcel? So I speeded up the steps forward, and found the black parcel was a wallet covered with a piece of cloth. The old cleaner trembling opened up the wallet and a bundle of hundred bills. I thought it must because someone in the early morning walked near the road and lost the wallet. My first reaction was to see how this cleaner of age would deal with such a windfall for this money can really be a temptation. The old cleaner in front of me quickly folded the wallet; carefully put this parcel into the bag with him. Then shortly after collecting his belongings, he disappeared into the misty distance in a hurry.

Seeing this, a burst of unnamed anger gushed from my breast, I could not control myself but stamped heavily on the ground, I walked while cursed the cleaner of advanced age: Really like I guessed! This old guy was tempted by the money! He was really poor, and had no aspiration in life; he deserved nothing, what a dirty and bad old man! I did not know if it was due to my inner anger or the long time walk from home, I was warm all over my body in spite of the cold rain. Muttering to myself about the old cleaner with contempt, I walked in a hurry in the direction of my school.

At noon, when I went back for lunch passing this same place, I paid special attention to the old cleaner, and he happened to be near doing his job. I still felt an anger and disdain toward him, and thought to myself, all right, he is an old poor man, and after all, a cleaner is a cleaner, could he become rich by getting this bundle of mony? Well, no way, of course.

In the afternoon, when I passed that street again, the old man was still doing his sweeping. Near him on the brick wall was a notice paper board, what was that? I felt a doubt in me and slowly walked to the paper board, because I knew it was forbidden to stick paper ads on the wall, this was to reduce negative effects on city atmosphere. When I went near, I found it was a paper board with four words instead-a simple lost and found notice. This all of a sudden aroused my interest, I went on to watch the notice, it said: I am a cleaner near this street, I found a wallet this morning near this place, in the wallet there is money and some valuable things. Who lost this wallet can go to my place to claim the wallet; I would be around this street every day. All of a sudden, I felt like there was a blow hit on my head, I seemed to have seen the ambitious look of the owner of this lost wallet. What was more important, I felt an overwhelmed guilty toward the cleaner of advanced age because I really misunderstood him with my own narrow thought and hasty judgment. How could I look down on this old cleaner merely by the scene I happen to encounter at that time? I really had to admit that I committed a mistake by judging people with colored eyes, and that I blamed the old kind hearted cleaner unjustly. At that moment, I suddenly found my eyesight blurred and the image of the shabby old man was magnified on and on……

Misunderstanding will bring about pain and suffering to the wronged person, just like the old poor cleaner in my experience. It is because the one party who has the misunderstanding is too subjective and emotional, this emotion makes one blind to see things and people objectively, the result is a righteous person tends to misunderstand a good person. Every time when I think of this experience, I will warn and remind myself to keep a balanced mind when encountering things alike; to learn to employ a tolerant heart during interaction with others. If everyone can successfully behave tolerantly and look others from a kind angle, there will be fewer conflicts and misunderstandings in this human community.

These schools include but not limited: Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology as well as Leland Stanford Junior University and etc. These schools mentioned above are more prestigious and older than Silicon Valley University; hence, they are unquestionably qualified to be the most competitive opponents of my university. However, studying at Silicon Valley University is affordable, and everyone could garner much more than the price itself. In order to study at Harvard University, students have to pay at least 50 thousand US dollars per year, which is a large sum of money and most of the poor may not be able to afford it. Questions for extra credits
Q 1: Should GE change its ultrasound marketing strategy in India? What role do culture and ethics play in this case? As Jeffrey Immelt, CEO of GE, how will you respond?
As is known to us, creativity is the main line between economic globalization and localization in the business world. At the same time, developing countries are becoming the focus in the world. In the process of economic globalization, GE insists the marketing strategy that nothing is more important than technology and creativity. As Jeffrey Immelt said," GE must give impetus to the creativity." And it is universally acknowledged that some developing countries, such as China and India, which have large amount of people, have been getting better and better. Obviously, culture and ethics play a very important role in the world. Thus, from my point of view, GE should change its ultrasound marketing strategy in India and pay more attention to the new markets.

Q 2: Should GE change its ultrasound marketing strategy in China? What role do culture and ethics play in this case? As Jeffrey Immelt, CEO of GE, how will you respond?
As a matter of fact, GE company does not have to change its ultrasound marketing strategy in China. China which is one of those developing countries still lack of high technological products. Most of Chinese companies related to this field do not have advanced technology to be developed. It is even worse that the products that China makes are not super quality. More often than not, they are prone to be broken. Under this circumstance, culture and ethics are playing an increasingly important role. Culture is the basic of a country, hence if GE changes its strategy, it will also influence the Chinese culture. GE has to harmonize with Chinese culture well. Ethics are just like cultures. If i were the CEO of GE, i will probably respond it with a Yes.
Q 3: Create a marketing plan for this product in a country of your choice. Why is planning important? What type of information is necessary? How will you get this information?
I will make a marketing plan in China. I will follow the four steps which i have learned in class (preliminary analysis and screening, adapting the marketing, developing the marketing plan, implementation and control). Because according to the Churchill, the prior minister of the Britain, “he who fails to plan is planing to fail”. Nothing can be done successfully without an excellent plan. The environmental factors, company character and screening criteria are necessary. Information can be got from market research and evaluation of program performance.
Q 4: Discuss the pros and cons of the different market entry methods to enter a new country of your choice. As CEO, what do you think is the ideal entry method for this market?
I chose to entry a new country via ship. There are a variety of advantages of this entry methods. First, it is a quick way to enter a new market. Secondly, the prices of the setting up manufacturing operations can be eliminate. However, there are still a wide range of disadvantages. It may compete with low-cost location producers. Secondly, it transplantation fees are expensive. Thirdly, the problems of tariff barriers are inevitable. Lastly, the marketing representatives and local distributors are short of control. I chose this entry method, because China is place which are famous for ship transportation. In other words, ship in China will be the best choice. Actually, mitigating the establishing manufacturing fees are very excellent.

How does it affect Chinese immigrant families
Kao,Grace, Vaquera, Elizabeth and Goyette Kimberly. “Immigration and Society: Education and Immigration”. Polity Press. 2013
The three authors explore the educational fruit of post-1965 immigrants and their children. Based on the historical context and key contemporary scholarship on immigration, the authors examine issues such as structural versus cultural theories of education stratification, and the role of language in educational outcomes. More specifically, the authors state that since the United States promises to offer universal education for all immigrants (or their children), Chinese parents would like to seize this opportunity to send their children to colleges or universities and to fully live the “American Dream”. Moreover, schooling is one of the best occasions for children to acquaint with American social rules or norms. In other words, schools play an important role in immigrant children’ assimilation or even, in their Americanization. In addition, authors put forward an assumption that schooling and getting high marks is the base for anyone to get a good job and high income, and thus earn themselves a good living, which is the essence of American Dream. Last but not least, authors consider the educational outcome of Chinese immigrant children, and investigate how this outcome influences Chinese immigrant families.
This piece of source is closely relevant to my topic because of the following three reasons. First, it demonstrates some essential data and statistics that can support my analysis and discussion, such as the population of children immigrants in the school’s enrollment, their academic performance, their employment, the educational attainment and socioeconomic status of immigrant adults in US today. Second, the author analyses and compare the academic performance and attainment of children in immigrant families from different Asian countries at the aspects of gender, race, ethnicity and background cultures, which helps me to consider the topic with horizontal comparison. Third, language barrier is one of the biggest problems that every Chinese immigrant has to face in a new residential environment. In my topic, I would like to discuss how Chinese parents should balance the education of Chinese traditional education and American education. This source will help me to figure out more aspects that I have overlooked before.

Zhou, Min. "Conflict, coping, and reconciliation: Intergenerational relations in Chinese immigrant families"[A]. Foner, Nancy [Eds]. Across Generations: Immigrant Families in America. New York University Press. 2009. pp.21-46
The author highlights the challenges that the Chinese immigrant families will encounter when they move to America. First, the structural changes in the immigrant family is one of such challenges, because in home land, Chinese families are extended in form living with several generation including grandparents or grandsons, but in America, this kind of kinship and relationship networks are broken. Second, roles in the immigrant family are changed. Since parents have to earn sufficient money to rear children without helps from grandparents or other close kin and friends, both have to go out for work. This will create difficulties for children for, after school, they have to stay alone at home. Especially, for parents with low English proficiency, they have to rely on their children as English translators between home and outside environment, which definitely abates the parental authority. Third it’s the culture gap between Chinese immigrant parents and their children who receive American education. This gap is produced by the crash between Chinese traditional education and education asserting personalities and individual dreams.
This piece source is related to my topic because these challenges brought by different reasons produce profound effects to the relationship of Chinese immigrant families and roles of parents and children. For example, Chinese parents, whom Chinese traditional ideas have been rooted in, want their children to respect and obey their “orders”. But children immigrants who accept American education would like live their own life making decisions by themselves and deciding their own lives. Sometimes children will challenge parental authority, especially when children is deciding their profession or choosing their jobs, which, for sure, will damage family relationship in Chinese immigrant family. We can see the inner effect brought by external environment.

Zhou, Min and Cai, Guoxuan. “Chinese Language Media in the United States:Immigration and Assimilation in American Life”. Qualitative Sociology. Human Sciences Press. Fall 2002. Vol. 25. No. 3. pp.410-440
Through descriptive analyses, the authors, Zhou Min and Cai Guoxuan, demonstrate that Chinese language media in America, such as press, radio and newspaper, not only constitutes Chinese ethnic identity business, but also associates Chinese immigrants with the host society of American mainstream by offering a clear and detailed stories about what happens around them so as to help reinforce the mobility goals of Chinese immigrant communities. In addition, the two authors state that this ethnic institution is a rapier. For one thing, this makes Chinese immigrants feel unrestrained in the American environment. For another, this cannot help Chinese immigrants improve their English-language ability and therefore Chinese immigrants still struggle in the assimilation process. Whether assimilation approach or pluralist method should be adopted is still a problem for Chinese immigrants as well as Americans. Moreover, the authors address that Chinese language media can be regarded as a media complementary with the host society rather than inharmonious. Last but not least, the influence of Chinese language media on the values of scholastic achievement and financial success is subtle but profound on the second generation. Some even choose to treat this media as a platform to launch.
I consider this source as one of the most suitable sources in literatures that I find so far because the relationship between Chinese immigrants and ingredient Americans is not unidirectional, but bidirectional. On one hand, America’s laws, acts and economic condition impact the decisions of Chinese immigration and settlement. On the other hand, since Chinese immigrant population grew bigger, their ideas, thoughts or behavior will also affect American mainstream. The authors discuss the influence on American mainstream caused by Chinese immigrants in the aspect of media, which is one of the most important factors that influence America daily life. What is more, some American mainstream marketers, such as Motorola, gradually seek Chinese language media to advertise their products. Through this source I can see the increasing importance of Chinese language media, and know more about how Chinese immigrants, in return, play a significant part in American life.

All sources that I find complement each other simultaneously, with sufficient investigations and argumentation. Variations in economy and politics in America brought about alteration of Chinese immigrants in ideas and thought about settlement and substantial development in U.S. within the first three waves of immigration from China to America, Chinese pursued high salaries to support their families in mainland China. On the contrary, after 1965, with significant changes in American immigration laws, increasing number of Chinese immigrants moved into USA with their whole families and settled down permanently. In order to adapt in American life, seek stable jobs with promising salaries and enter dominant society, the first generation of Chinese immigrants would like to push their second generation to be excellent in schools, universities or colleges with harsh education. However, because the bicultural communities formed by different income levels, education levels and even more cultures from regions such as China, United States, Europe and Middle East, the ideas of quality-oriented education become the weapon of children to oppose traditional education from Chinese parents, which brings great challenge to Chinese immigrant families. This is one of the challenges brought by external environment in the melting pot of U.S. On the other hand, Chinese immigration also brought impact to American mainstream through Chinese media.

First time to see mountaineering movie

First time to see mountaineering movie
I saw a clip titled Climbing Mount Index, Washington, created in ca. 1930. It’s a short film of three minutes and 56 seconds. It belongs to Mountaineers Film Collection from UW Library. It’s the first time I saw a film on climbing made in such early times.
Videos or ads about climbing can be seen everywhere on the screen whenever we turn on the TV. The magnificent scenery, professional outfits or smile of success all pop out in front of our eyes. This film is so different from what we make today. By watching the screen, it seems it is a bunch of villagers climbing up the mountain to get food if there are not some pictures of steep hills and vast areas of snow. The mountaineers are laughing together, which seems like they are really a group of shepherd raising their sheep on the mountain. What impresses me most is the script explanation of the environment in the middle of the screen. It tells us the exact step of the mountaineers such as “up the rock” and “over the snow”. What is funnier is the words of “Gim’me that lipstick”. It’s a humorous way to describe the mountaineers’ hiking stick, which is rarely seen in today’s film.
When it comes to climbing mountains, we would easily think of conquering the nature with persistence or strong will, but this film illustrates climbing in a humorous and relaxed way. Maybe the technique of filming in 1930 was much more backward and there were not professional climbing outfits either, and climbing at that that time was in a primitive way, but it was very authentic, and I am thrilled to have a glimpse of how climbing has developed over the past decades.
http://digitalcollections.lib.washington.edu/cdm/singleitem/collection/filmarch/id/503/rec/3
Another film I saw is about mountaineers, which is about rescue on the mountains. As is shown in Climbing Mount Index, the way of rescue in the film is also in a very primitive way, just like the way we used to do in wars. All the rescuing work was done by labor without advanced equipment. Nowadays, helicopters are used whenever it is necessary. It also strikes me how much improvements we have made in this area.
http://digitalcollections.lib.washington.edu/cdm/singleitem/collection/filmarch/id/708/rec/7
Response
After watching all the clips of Grays Harbor, I can’t feel the same as you do since I have never been to that place. But I also agree that it’s always nice to see the whole community lining up in the streets for activities. The picture seems so harmonious and heart-warming. In most Chinese cities, people don’t know each other even if they live next door if they were not related or acquainted before moving into the same community. I always wonder the closeness between each other when cities didn’t come into being. My grandparents always tell me stories of what happened in the neighborhood when they were young. So sometimes people doubt whether the society is really developing or is it also a kind of backwardness in some way?
Watching the film of Lake Quinault, I totally get it when you say it’s so amazed that an old video of a small place still exists today. I have to say antiques always have their way to surprise us. What amused me was that a person was inserted in the film in the scene of the waterfall in the end. Nowadays, what we usually see is the perfect filming of the waterfall without other things ruining the perfect picture. But personally speaking, it’s not a bad thing to enjoy the scenery in a different way.

Difficulties encountered by international students

Difficulties encountered by international students
After reform and opening up, there are an increasing number of Chinese students choosing to study abroad. Doing like this has unquestionably helped numerous Chinese students master the advanced technologies and knowledge which are impossible to be learned in China, promoted the Chinese and foreign cultural exchanges and collaboration as well as contributed to the rapid development of China. However, the difficulties and setbacks that those overseas students are confronting should never be neglected. In the process of studying abroad, Chinese students are facing a variety of problems which tie on the overarching topics of language, culture, living styles and etc (Hyeyoung & Montgomery, 2013, P343). This essay aims to explore this sophisticated issue from diverse perspectives regarding all the problems mentioned above.
Among all the difficulties that overseas students are encountering, language barrier stands out remarkably. China, as one of the developing countries which focus mainly on booming economy, emphasizes too much on exams rather than imparting knowledge. As it has been known to us, English which spreads the most widely all over the world is no doubt be the language that every student should master as long as he or she has the desire to have a further education abroad. However, instead of speaking, Chinese students have the tendency to be adept at writing. Under this educational system, the emergence of “Mute English” is inevitable. According to Bang, Hyeyoung, and Diane Montgomery (2013), language barrier is playing a crucial problem in the U.S (P348). In order to harmonize with the American residents perfectly and integrate into the modern American society, transcending the insurmountable seems to be of prime importance.
When it comes to study abroad, the cultural differences are an equally huge dilemma that overseas students are facing. Having been living in a place for a couple of years, human beings are very likely to get accustomed of the cultures that their countries have. Meaning to say, when they go abroad and study, they will not be able to adapt to the local cultures and to communicate with dwellers in a certain country effectively. Confronting those culture shocks, students will have to be plunged into a deep hole of despair in all probability. Gill Scherto (2007) points out that culture shock may lead to delusion, pressure and anxiety, more often than not, students may feel uncomfortable, because the culture and the ambience that they are encountering are entirely different from the ones that they are habituated (P171). It has never been easy to forget their own cultures and start to involve into a brandy-new culture in a short period of time. Culture shocks will always exit as long as there are students who want to go abroad and study.
Living styles vary from country to country. Studying abroad means that students have to change the living styles that they are used to. According to Gebhard, Jerry G, an outstanding mentor in an American school, illustrates that adapting to living in new physical surroundings may become a thorny issue which is very likely to make them feel anxious, confused, depressed and homesick (P20). If students fail to manage to deal with these difficulties, they will have to be degenerated.

Annotated bibliography
"Understanding International Graduate Students' Acculturation Using Q Methodology."
In this essay, it discusses something about the adjustments that students from other parts of world come to the United States of America to have a further education. Those adjustments include the aspects of society, culture as well as the academics which are posting a serious threat to overseas students. In addition, it also reveals that international graduates are stressed, due to the wonderful academic and professional performances that those students want to give. I can use it to confirm my arguments like language barrier is the crucial factor in my essay. It will certainly make my argument become more convincing and persuasive.
"Overseas students' intercultural adaptation as intercultural learning: a
transformative framework."
This essay focuses on the learning experience of Chinese postgraduate students. Moreover, it inquires into the students’ adaptation to several dimensions like socio-culture. There are a wide range of reasons that the author used to elaborate his arguments. In terms of culture, there are multifarious reasons showing the factors which lead to the cultural shock in this essay. They are very helpful for me, because I can use them to strengthen my arguments and make it more convincing. It is very difficult to talk about the cultural differences, but the author described it in an excellent way which is easy for readers to understand its harm.
“International Student Voices: Adapting to American Culture Inside and Outside the Classroom”
This paper was written by an excellent instructor as well as his students in a school. It shows a variety of authentic events that truly happened in the world. His students are also from every part of the world. In other words, it shows a variety of different events that different students may encounter when they choose to study abroad. Actually, this essay is fabulous, because it did not focus on personal and individual ideas. On the contrary, it focuses more on the diverse students. I could use it to express my ideas, because this essay shows a majority challenge that most of international students are facing, which will absolutely make my essay more readable and persuasive.
