Both Willy and Walter have a dream, a hope for more dignified and richer life. Both of them are eagerly longing to provide the family with the best they can have. But Willy dies from his dream. Suicide might perhaps be the last choice for him to get relief. In the end, courage along with the families of Willy both fails him. With no one to turn to, Willy goes on a path which never leads back. Though both Willy and Walter are confronted with a lot of challenges, different characters of them lead to different ending.

What’s more, it is evident that both Willy and Walter represent not only themselves; they are also symbolic of a group of people. We are also the breadwinner in two thirds of American families”.(Bennett, 294).It is obvious that the role of women in a family different from the past, they are more independent and more free in a family.

Secondly, people’s opinions about marriage change, when women are dependent on men and want a marriage to hold the family in the past, now they are more refused to the marriage until they find the right one. We can see from the high divorce rate in America which are familiar but staggering and is the higest in the western world. People’s opinion are more open and more compatible, in fact, the society become a motley mix of single parents, same sex couples, and, yes, unmarried monogamists. In the past, marriage means long-time with each other, but now as anthropologist says “Human are not meant to be together forever, but in short term, monogamous relationships of three or four years (Bennett, 296). More and more Americans are reluctant to get married.They say goodbye to marriage sometimes because it seems that unwed Americans may find it even more advantageous -financially, anyway-to stay single. As a matter of fact, people’s opinions about family changes also. What makes Saving Private Ryan a good film in the text book is the faithfulness to the reality.What makes it great is that it represents the American cultural phenomena and the push forwards the identification of people as Americans. It did not just stop at simply shooting brutal scenes with fancies angles, but from a lens of sociology, this Oscar nominated film successfully created a group portrait of Americans, the diversities among them, the belief glue them as a whole, how they identify with the country and passes down this virtue to those comings. Some people claim that American has no history. This exaggeration in some degree reflects the lack of a common historic value in America. America is a country built on the new continent, and its people are all different and from different places. The history decides the eternal pursuit of Americans is individualism, but “nation” is a collective concept which requires everyone’s participation and in some circumstances, sacrifice of individuals. This dilemma is exanimated in Steven Spearberg in the most extreme setting——the war. Among all human activities, there is nothing more violent and cruel than wars. The wars are a collective exhibition of human actions in a circumstance without ordinary social constrains. Nowadays, aimed with the development cinematic technologies, war films become showcases of how far theatres can go to represent the real-time experience towards audiences. In this light, Saving Private Ryan has fulfilled the outer expectations for a war film.

But as a film depicts a story during World War II, it also serves successfully as one of the catalyst in America’s social identification. In the war, confronting the damage of individuals and the nation, reactions of every single people is most natural, reflecting their believes and their understanding of what does country mean to them. The best scenes exemplify American’s social identity in the movie are those interactions between team members.
