I always picture this scene in mind with excitement and aspiration, that one day I could give full play to my talents as an excellent nutritionist in facing of the austere times--public health crisis that is not ephemeral and will not vanish too soon in one recession. Actually, since 1990s, the frequency of health crisis rose gradually and most countries have not been ready for dealing with such set of threats from food to minds. Take obesity for example. The rapid spread of obesity is analogous to the spread of an infectious disease, which has already become the hot topic in nutrition research. The deeper I’ve learned, the stronger my desire is to make reasonable nutrition plans. Indeed, I’ve being doing it so far.
In order to investigate the high school students’ breakfast behaviors, I planed and organized a survey team with 3 classmates. Through brainstorms, a bunch of ideas were gotten there and we ranked them in a meaningful order so as to select the best execution mode. Then as the group leader, I began to make a detail plan and assign tasks to each member. When met some problems, we discussed together and learn from each other. I even provided some incentives for them. Finally we achieved gratifying results and found that only 65% of high school students kept this habit, but the nutrition quality of the foods consumed in breakfast was poor and the mail foods were cooked starches, such as breads, crackers, pastas, pretzels and potato chip, which is the main reason for causing malnutrition because they were lack of protein, some micro elements deficiencies and too much intake of fat to increase the risk of disease and death. I summarized the findings in my paper and published in China Academic Periodical. It was my first time that I had joint an academic research to connect with the basic research methods of nutrition and my raw passion was greatly stimulated. I would like to devote myself to improving people’s health standard and life quality. Through this activity, my leadership and communication and cooperation skills were improved. I deeply knew nutrition research is not a person can complete, solidarity and cooperation is very important, which was verified again in my internship in China CDC, National center for Chronic and Non-communicable Disease control and Prevention, where I mainly learned the related knowledge of hypertension, diabetes and obesity, including ways of control and prevention and corresponding strategy and measures so as to study the risk factors of Chinese people’s chronic diseases and its social harmfulness, which not only broadened my horizons, deepened my understanding and expanded my boundaries in learning nutrition, but also cultivated my capabilities in searching literature review, collecting related materials, analyzing data as well as fetching information.
Leadership and learning process are indispensable to each other. I sincerely hope that you can give a chance to study in your program which will give me more chance to practice my leadership both in activities and internships.
