　大阪大学の西田幸二教授らの研究チームは、目の角膜の病気で、ほぼ視力を失った30代から70代の男女4人に、iPS細胞を使ったシート状の角膜を移植し、1年間、経過を調べた。

　その結果、矯正視力で0.04だった患者が0.3まで改善するなど、3人は、日常生活に支障がない程度まで視力が回復。残りの1人も、角膜の濁りがなくなったという。

　大阪大学　大学院医学系研究科・西田幸二教授：「これが、iPS細胞から作った角膜上皮。真ん中の部分。これ、角膜上皮だけの部分。非常に透明性が高くて、非常に強固です。我々の生体にある角膜上皮に、非常に酷似しているということになります」

　これまでの角膜移植では、拒絶反応などが課題となっていたが、4人とも拒絶反応や感染症などは起きなかったという。
