仮面ライダーシリーズは1971年より開始された石ノ森章太郎原作・東映制作による特撮テレビドラマシリーズである。
本シリーズは同一の番組ではなく、仮面ライダーの名を冠した複数の番組が、登場人物や設定を変えながらシリーズとして続けられている作品群である。
数度の中断をはさみながら現在も放映され続け、放映期間は1971年に始まる第1作『仮面ライダー』放映以来40年を超え、2016年には45周年を迎えた。
仮面ライダーは基本的にバイクに乗り、虫をモチーフとしたものが多く、怪人と呼ばれる敵と戦う。
各作品の内容は、主人公などが仮面ライダーと呼ばれる戦士に変身し、怪人と総称される敵と戦うというものである。
しかし同じく東映が制作している特撮ヒーロー番組である「スーパー戦隊シリーズ」と異なり、仮面ライダーシリーズは明確なフォーマットが確立していない
。そのため、テーマや演出は作品によってまちまちである。
平成年間の数作品のプロデューサーを務めた白倉伸一郎は、「仮面ライダー」を成立させるための最低限の要素として、以下の3つを挙げている。
-同族同士の争い-
シリーズ第1作『仮面ライダー』では、主人公もその敵である怪人も、ともに悪の組織「ショッカー」によって生み出された存在である。
-親殺し-
仮面ライダーがショッカーを倒そうとするのは、すなわち自分の生みの親を滅ぼそうとすることである。
-自己否定-
仮面ライダーが勝利できたとしても、彼自身の出自がショッカーにあるので、最後には自分を消さなくてはならない。
-仮面ライダーの定義-
仮面ライダーとして設定されたキャラクターの総数は、2010年代には100名を越えるようになり、
もはや全員に当てはまる定義を述べることが不可能な状況にある。仮面ライダーの条件の1つとして
「人間以上の能力を持った戦士」であることが考えられるが、『仮面ライダーストロンガー』に登場した電波人間タックルや
『仮面ライダー龍騎』のオルタナティブのように、変身する戦士であるにもかかわらず仮面ライダーとはされないものもおり、
それぞれの作品に深く踏み込まないとライダーか否かの区別はつけがたい。
仮面ライダーは調べれば調べるほど奥が深く、まとめるのにとても苦労した。

Kamen Rider (Masked Rider) series are tokusatu superhero television drama series created by Shotaro Ishimonori,
it started airing in 1971.
It’s not the same sequel programs, it’s the multiple programs named Masked Rider,
changing the characters and the settings as the series it continues airing.
It continues airing even it has some interruption, and it’s series airing over 40 years.
The Kamen Rider media generally features a motorcycle-riding superhero with an insect motif who fights supervillains,
often known as kaijin (怪人).
The contents of the Masked Rider are the characters transform into the fighter called Masked Rider
and fight with the villain called Kaijin. However,
it’s different from likewise the tokusatsu hero program called Super Sentai series,
the clear format hasn’t been established. Thus, the theme and production are different on the each series.
Shinichiro Shirakura who produced several series of Heisei Riders,
said there are three minimum materials to establish Masked Rider.
-Between the fight with the same race-
On the first series of the Masked Rider,
both of the main character and the Kaijin created by the same villain organization.
-Killing Parents-
Masked Rider is to beat Shocker is to destroy the parents of them.
-Self-denial-
Even though Masked Rider could beat the enemies, the origin of himself is shocker,
so delete own-self at the end.
-Definition of Masked Riders-
There are over 100 Riders counted as Masked Riders as of 2010’s,
so it is impossible to apply the definition to all the Masked Riders.
One of the conditions of Masked Riders is “The fighter who has the abilities over ordinary human,”
However, as like the electric-wave human tackle from the “Masked Rider Stronger”
and the alternative from the “Masked Rider Ryuki” which wouldn’t be counted as Masked Riders even though they transform.
