伝道者の書８章

誰が知恵ある者のようだろうか？誰が物事の解釈を知っているのか？
人の知恵はその顔を輝かせ、その顔の大胆さは変えられる。
Who is as the wise man? and who knoweth the interpretation of a thing? A man's wisdom maketh his face to shine, and the boldness of his face is changed.
1 だれが知恵ある者にふさわしいだろう。だれが事物の意義を知りえよう。
人の知恵は、その人の顔を輝かし、その顔の固さを和らげる。

2 私はあなたに勧める。
王の命令を守りなさい！また神の誓いを守りなさい！
2 I [counsel thee]: keep the king's command, and that in regard of the oath of God.
2 私は言う。王の命令を守れ。神の誓約があるから。

3 急いで彼の前から出て行ってはならない。
悪事の中に立ってはならない。
彼は御心に適うことをするからである。
3 Be not hasty to go out of his presence; stand not in an evil thing; for he doeth whatsoever pleaseth him.
3 王の前からあわてて退出するな。悪事に荷担するな。王は自分の望むままを何でもするから。

4 王の言葉には力がある。
そして、誰が彼に言うかもしれない。「あなたは何をしているのか？」
4 Forasmuch as the king's word hath power; and who may say unto him: 'What doest thou?'
4 王のことばには権威がある。だれが彼に、「あなたは何をするのですか」と言えようか。

5 戒めを守る者は悪い事を知らない。賢者の心は時と判断を見極める。
5 Whoso keepeth the commandment shall know no evil thing; and a wise man's heart discerneth time and judgment.
5 命令を守る者はわざわいを知らない。知恵ある者の心は時とさばきを知っている。

6 すべての事には時があり、裁きがある。
6 For to every matter there is a time and judgment; for the evil of man is great upon him.
6 すべての営みには時とさばきがある。人に降りかかるわざわいが多いからだ。

7 彼はなるべき事を知らないからである。人の悪は彼の上に大きいからである。
7 For he knoweth not that which shall be; for even when it cometh to pass, who shall declare it unto him?
7 何が起こるかを知っている者はいない。いつ起こるかをだれも告げることはできない。

風をおさえる力のある者はいない。
死の日に打ち勝つ力もない。
また、戦争には逃げ場がなく、悪はそれに身を任せた者を救い出さない。
There is no man that hath power over the wind to retain the wind; neither hath he power over the day of death; and there is no discharge in war; neither shall wickedness deliver him that is given to it.
8 風を支配し、風を止めることのできる人はいない。死の日も支配することはできない。この戦いから放免される者はいない。悪は悪の所有者を救いえない。

9 私はこのすべての事を見、また私の心をこれに当てて、太陽の下で行われるどんなわざをも見た。
9 All this have I seen, even applied my heart thereto, whatever the work that is done under the sun; what time one man had power over another to his hurt.
9 私はこのすべてを見て、日の下で行われるいっさいのわざ、人が人を支配して、わざわいを与える時について、私の心を用いた。

10 私は悪人が葬られるのを見た。
彼らはその安息に入ったが、正しい行いをした者は聖なる所から出て行き、町の中で忘れられた。
このこともまた、空虚だ。
10 And so I saw the wicked buried, and they entered into their rest; but they that had done right went away from the holy place, and were forgotten in the city; this also is vanity.
10 そこで、私は見た。悪者どもが葬られて、行くのを。しかし、正しい行いの者が、聖なる方の所を去り、そうして、町で忘れられるのを。これもまた、むなしい。

11 悪のわざに対する判決がすみやかに下されないので、人の子らの心は悪を行うために、すっかり定まっている。
11 Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil;
11 悪い行いに対する宣告がすぐ下されないので、人の子らの心は悪を行う思いで満ちている。

12 罪人は百回も悪を行い、その日を延ばすからである。
しかし、私は、神を畏敬する者、神の御前で恐れる者には、良いことがあると知っている。
12 because a sinner doeth evil a hundred times, and prolongeth his days--though yet I know that it shall be well with them that fear God, that fear before Him;
12 罪人が、百度悪事を犯しても、長生きしている。しかし私は、神を恐れる者も、神を敬って、しあわせであることを知っている。

13 しかし、悪者は、神の前に恐れないので、自分の日数を長くすることができない。なぜなら、彼は神の前に恐れないからだ。
13 but it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he prolong his days, which are as a shadow, because he feareth not before God.
13 悪者にはしあわせがない。その生涯を影のように長くすることはできない。彼らは神を敬わないからだ。

14 地の上に行われることは、空虚である。
正しい人がいて、その人に悪人へのわざが起こり、
また、悪い人がいて、その人に正しい人へのわざが起こる。
このことも空虚だと私は言った。
14 There is a vanity which is done upon the earth: that there are righteous men, unto whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked; again, there are wicked men, to whom it happeneth according to the work of the righteous--I said that this also is vanity.
14 しかし、むなしいことが地上で行われている。悪者に対する報いを正しい人がその身に受け、正しい人の行いに対する報いを悪者がその身に受けることがある。これもまた、むなしい、と私は言いたい。

15 そこで、私は歓楽を勧めた。
「人は日の下に、食べること、飲むこと、楽しむことにまさることはない。
そして、神が太陽の下で彼に与えた生涯のすべての日に、彼の労働に同行すべきである。
15 So I commended mirth, that a man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry, and that this should accompany him in his labour all the days of his life which God hath given him under the sun.
15 私は快楽を賛美する。日の下では、食べて、飲んで、楽しむよりほかに、人にとって良いことはない。これは、日の下で、神が人に与える一生の間に、その労苦に添えてくださるものだ。

16 私が知恵を知り、地の上で行われる業を見ようと心を向けた時、人は昼も夜も、その目で眠りを見ない。
16 When I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done upon the earth--for neither day nor night do men see sleep with their eyes--
16 私は一心に知恵を知り、昼も夜も眠らずに、地上で行われる人の仕事を見ようとしたとき、

17 その時、私は神のすべてのわざを見た。
人は太陽の下で行われるわざを見いだすことができない。
なぜなら、人がそれを探し求めようとしても、見つけることはできないからである。
さらに、賢い人がそれを知ろうと思っても、見つけることはできない。
17 then I beheld all the work of God, that man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun; because though a man labour to seek it out, yet he shall not find it; yea further, though a wise man think to know it, yet shall he not be able to find it.
17 すべては神のみわざであることがわかった。人は日の下で行われるみわざを見きわめることはできない。人は労苦して捜し求めても、見いだすことはない。知恵ある者が知っていると思っても、見きわめることはできない。

1 だれが知恵ある者にふさわしいだろう。だれが事物の意義を知りえよう。人の知恵は、その人の顔を輝かし、その顔の固さを和らげる。

5 Whoso keepeth the commandment shall know no evil thing; and a wise man's heart discerneth time and judgment.
6 For to every matter there is a time and judgment; for the evil of man is great upon him.
7 For he knoweth not that which shall be; for even when it cometh to pass, who shall declare it unto him?

13 but it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he prolong his days, which are as a shadow, because he feareth not before God.
14 There is a vanity which is done upon the earth: that there are righteous men, unto whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked; again, there are wicked men, to whom it happeneth according to the work of the righteous--I said that this also is vanity.
15 So I commended mirth, that a man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry, and that this should accompany him in his labour all the days of his life which God hath given him under the sun.
16 When I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done upon the earth--for neither day nor night do men see sleep with their eyes--
17 then I beheld all the work of God, that man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun; because though a man labour to seek it out, yet he shall not find it; yea further, though a wise man think to know it, yet shall he not be able to find it.
