エステル記１章

さて、アハシュエロス（インドからエチオピアまで、百七十二州を治めたアハシュエロス）の時代になると、こうなりました。
2 その頃、アハシュエロス王がその国の王座についた時、その城はシュシャンにありました。
3 その治世の三年目に、彼はすべての君主とその僕とで宴会を開き、ペルシャとメディアの軍隊、諸州の貴族と君主が彼の前にいました。
4 その栄光ある王国の富とそのすぐれた威光を、百四十日に渡って見せびらかしました。
5 これらの日が終ったとき、王はシュシャン城にいる大小のすべての民に、七日間、王の宮殿の庭の中庭で宴を催しました。
6 白、上質の綿、青の垂れ幕があり、上質の麻と紫の紐で縁取られ、銀の棒と大理石の柱の上に置かれ、長椅子は金と銀で、緑、白、貝、オニキスの大理石の敷物の上に置かれていました。
7 彼らは金の容器で彼らに酒を飲ませましたが、その容器はさまざまで、王の恵みによって王家のぶどう酒が豊富にありました。
8 酒は法令に従って飲まれ、誰も強制しませんでした。
王はその家のすべての役人に、各人の好むようにするように命じたからです。
9 また、王妃ワシュティはアハシュエロス王の王宮の女達のために宴を催しました。
10 七日目に、王の心がぶどう酒で陽気になったので、王はメフマン、ビゼタ、ハルボナ、ビグタ、アバグタ、ゼタル、カルカスの七人の侍従に命じて、王の前に仕えるようにした。
10 七日目に、王は酒で心が陽気になり、アハシュエロス王に仕える七人の宦官メフマン、ビゼタ、ハルボナ、ビグタ、アバグタ、ゼタル、カルカスに命じて、
11 王妃ワシュティを王冠とともに王の前に連れて来て、その美しさを民と諸侯に示すようにとのことでした。
12 しかし、王妃ワシュティは侍従達が持って来た王の命令によっては来ることを拒んだので、王は非常に不愉快に思い、その怒りを燃やしました。
12 しかし、王妃ワシュティが宦官から伝えられた王の命令を拒んで来ようとしなかったので、王は非常に怒り、その憤りが彼のうちで燃え立った。
13 そこで、王は時を知る賢者達に言いました。
--法令と判決を知るすべての者に対する王の態度はこのとおりでした。
13 そこで王は法令に詳しい、知恵のある者たちに相談した。
―このように、法令と裁判に詳しいすべての者に計るのが、王のならわしであった。
14 その次にはペルシャとメディアの七人の君、カルシェナ、シェタル、アデマタ、タルシシュ、メレス、マルセナ、メムカンが王の顔を見て、王国で第一の座に座りました。
15 『王妃ワシュティが侍従達によってアハシュエロス王の命に従わなかったので、私達は法律に従って、王妃ワシュティに何をしなければならないでしょうか。』」
16 そこで、メムカンは王と諸侯の前で答えました。
「王妃ワシュティは王に対してだけでなく、アハシュエロス王の全州にいるすべての君主とすべての民に対して、不義を行ったのです。
17 王妃のこの行いは、すべての女に伝わって、彼らの夫を彼らの目に卑しいものとさせ、こう言われるようになるでしょう。『アハシュエロス王は王妃ワシュティを自分の前に連れてくるように命じたが、彼女は来なかった。』
18 この日、王妃の行いを聞いたペルシャとメディアの王女達は、王のすべての王子達に向かって同じように言うでしょう。
それで十分な侮りと怒りとが生じるでしょう。
19 もし、王がお望みならば、王から勅令を出して、ペルシャとメディアの法律の中に書き記し、これを改めないようにし、ワシュティはもうアハシュエロス王の前に出ず、王はその王領を彼女よりすぐれた者に与えるようにしてください！
20 そして、王の下す詔書が、その王国中に公表されると、それがどんなに大きくても、すべての妻は大小を問わず、夫に栄誉を与えるでしょう。」
21 この言葉は王と諸侯とを喜ばせたので、王はメムカンの言葉のとおりにしました。
22 王は王のすべての地方に、その書きつけにしたがって手紙を送り、また、すべての民にその言葉にしたがって手紙を送り、みな自分の家の中で治め、自分の民の言葉にしたがって話すようにと言いました。

1 アハシュエロスの時代のこと―このアハシュエロスは、ホドからクシュまで百二十七州を治めていた―
2 アハシュエロス王がシュシャンの城で、王座に着いていたころ、
3 その治世の第三年に、彼はすべての首長と家臣たちのために宴会を催した。それにはペルシヤとメディヤの有力者、貴族たちおよび諸州の首長たちが出席した。
4 そのとき、王は輝かしい王国の富と、そのきらびやかな栄誉を幾日も示して、百八十日に及んだ。
5 この期間が終わると、王はシュシャンの城にいた身分の高い者から低い者に至るまですべての民のために、七日間、王宮の園の庭で、宴会を催した。
6 そこには白綿布や青色の布が、白や紫色の細ひもで大理石の柱の銀の輪に結びつけられ、金と銀でできた長いすが、緑色石、白大理石、真珠貝や黒大理石のモザイクの床の上に置かれていた。
7 彼は金の杯で酒をふるまったが、その杯は一つ一つ違っていた。そして王の勢力にふさわしく王室の酒がたくさんあった。
8 それを飲むとき、法令によって、だれも強いられなかった。だれでもめいめい自分の好みのままにするようにと、王が宮殿のすべての役人に命じておいたからである。
9 王妃ワシュティも、アハシュエロス王の王宮で婦人たちのために宴会を催した。
10 七日目に、王は酒で心が陽気になり、アハシュエロス王に仕える七人の宦官メフマン、ビゼタ、ハルボナ、ビグタ、アバグタ、ゼタル、カルカスに命じて、
11 王妃ワシュティに王冠をかぶらせ、彼女を王の前に連れて来るようにと言った。それは、彼女の容姿が美しかったので、その美しさを民と首長たちに見せるためであった。
12 しかし、王妃ワシュティが宦官から伝えられた王の命令を拒んで来ようとしなかったので、王は非常に怒り、その憤りが彼のうちで燃え立った。
13 そこで王は法令に詳しい、知恵のある者たちに相談した。―このように、法令と裁判に詳しいすべての者に計るのが、王のならわしであった。
14 王の側近の者はペルシヤとメディヤの七人の首長たちカルシェナ、シェタル、アデマタ、タルシシュ、メレス、マルセナ、メムカンで、彼らは王と面接ができ、王国の最高の地位についていた―
15 「王妃ワシュティは、宦官によって伝えられたアハシュエロス王の命令に従わなかったが、法令により、彼女をどう処分すべきだろうか。」
16 メムカンは王と首長たちの前で答えた。「王妃ワシュティは王ひとりにではなく、すべての首長とアハシュエロス王のすべての州の全住民にも悪いことをしました。
17 なぜなら、王妃の行いが女たちみなに知れ渡り、『アハシュエロス王が王妃ワシュティに王の前に来るように命じたが、来なかった』と言って、女たちは自分の夫を軽く見るようになるでしょう。
18 きょうにでも、王妃のことを聞いたペルシヤとメディヤの首長の夫人たちは、王のすべての首長たちに、このことを言って、ひどい軽蔑と怒りが起こることでしょう。
19 もしも王によろしければ、ワシュティはアハシュエロス王の前に出てはならないという勅令をご自身で出し、ペルシヤとメディヤの法令の中に書き入れて、変更することのないようにし、王は王妃の位を彼女よりもすぐれた婦人に授けてください。
20 王が出される詔勅が、この大きな王国の隅々まで告げ知らされると、女たちは、身分の高い者から低い者に至るまでみな、自分の夫を尊敬するようになりましょう。」
21 この進言は、王と首長たちの心にかなったので、王はメムカンの言ったとおりにした。
22 そこで王は、王のすべての州に書簡を送った。各州にはその文字で、各民族にはそのことばで書簡を送り、男子はみな、一家の主人となること、また、自分の民族のことばで話すことを命じた。

Now it came to pass in the days of Ahasuerus--this is Ahasuerus who reigned, from India even unto Ethiopia, over a hundred and seven and twenty provinces--
2 that in those days, when the king Ahasuerus sat on the throne of his kingdom, which was in Shushan the castle,
3 in the third year of his reign, he made a feast unto all his princes and his servants; the army of Persia and Media, the nobles and princes of the provinces, being before him;
4 when he showed the riches of his glorious kingdom and the honour of his excellent majesty, many days, even a hundred and fourscore days.
5 And when these days were fulfilled, the king made a feast unto all the people that were present in Shushan the castle, both great and small, seven days, in the court of the garden of the king's palace;
6 there were hangings of white, fine cotton, and blue, bordered with cords of fine linen and purple, upon silver rods and pillars of marble; the couches were of gold and silver, upon a pavement of green, and white, and shell, and onyx marble.
7 And they gave them drink in vessels of gold--the vessels being diverse one from another--and royal wine in abundance, according to the bounty of the king.
8 And the drinking was according to the law; none did compel; for so the king had appointed to all the officers of his house, that they should do according to every man's pleasure. 
9 Also Vashti the queen made a feast for the women in the royal house which belonged to king Ahasuerus.
10 On the seventh day, when the heart of the king was merry with wine, he commanded Mehuman, Bizzetha, Harbona, Bigtha, and Abagtha, Zethar, and Carcas, the seven chamberlains that ministered in the presence of Ahasuerus the king,
11 to bring Vashti the queen before the king with the crown royal, to show the peoples and the princes her beauty; for she was fair to look on.
12 But the queen Vashti refused to come at the king's commandment by the chamberlains; therefore was the king very wroth, and his anger burned in him. 
13 Then the king said to the wise men, who knew the times--for so was the king's manner toward all that knew law and judgment;
14 and the next unto him was Carshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena, and Memucan, the seven princes of Persia and Media, who saw the king's face, and sat the first in the kingdom:
15 'What shall we do unto the queen Vashti according to law, forasmuch as she hath not done the bidding of the king Ahasuerus by the chamberlains?' 
16 And Memucan answered before the king and the princes: 'Vashti the queen hath not done wrong to the king only, but also to all the princes, and to all the peoples, that are in all the provinces of the king Ahasuerus.
17 For this deed of the queen will come abroad unto all women, to make their husbands contemptible in their eyes, when it will be said: The king Ahasuerus commanded Vashti the queen to be brought in before him, but she came not.
18 And this day will the princesses of Persia and Media who have heard of the deed of the queen say the like unto all the king's princes. So will there arise enough contempt and wrath.
19 If it please the king, let there go forth a royal commandment from him, and let it be written among the laws of the Persians and the Medes, that it be not altered, that Vashti come no more before king Ahasuerus, and that the king give her royal estate unto another that is better than she.
20 And when the king's decree which he shall make shall be published throughout all his kingdom, great though it be, all the wives will give to their husbands honour, both to great and small.'
21 And the word pleased the king and the princes; and the king did according to the word of Memucan;
22 for he sent letters into all the king's provinces, into every province according to the writing thereof, and to every people after their language, that every man should bear rule in his own house, and speak according to the language of his people.
