さて、アハブの子エホラムはユダの王エホシャファトの十八年にサマリヤでイスラエルを治め始めて、十二年在位していました。
2 彼は主の目に悪とされることを行いましたが、その父および母のようにはならず、その父が立てたバアルの柱を片付けました。
3 しかし、彼はネバツの子ヤロブアムの罪、すなわちイスラエルに罪を犯させた罪から離れず、そこから離れませんでした。
4 モアブの王メシャは羊飼いで、十万頭の子羊の毛と十万頭の雄羊の毛をイスラエルの王に贈りました。
5 しかし、アハブが死んだ時、モアブの王はイスラエルの王に反抗しました。
6 エホラム王はその時サマリヤを出て、全イスラエルを召集しました。
7 彼は行ってユダの王エホシャファトに告げて言いました。
「モアブの王は私に反逆しました。あなたは私と一緒にモアブに戦いに行きますか？」

8 彼は言いました。
「私達はどの道を上って行きましょうか？」

9 そこで、イスラエルの王は行き、ユダの王は行き、エドムの王は行きました。
彼らは七日の行程を巡ったが、軍勢のためにも、彼らに従う獣のためにも水がありませんでした。
10 イスラエルの王は言いました。
「残念だ。主はこの三人の王を一緒に召して、彼らをモアブの手に渡されたのだ。」
11 しかし、エホシャファトは言いました。
「ここには主の預言者がいないので、彼によって主に尋ねることができないのですか？」
すると、イスラエルの王の僕達の一人が答えて言いました。
「シャファトの子エリシャがここにいます。彼はエリヤの手に水を注いだ人です。」
12 エホシャファトは言いました。
「主の言葉は彼とともにあります。」
そこで、イスラエルの王とエホシャファトとエドムの王は彼のもとに下って行きました。
13 エリシャはイスラエルの王に言いました。
「私はあなたとどういう関係なのでしょうか？あなたの父の預言者達、またあなたの母の預言者達のところに行きなさい！」
イスラエルの王は彼に言いました。
「いいえ。主はこの三人の王を一緒に召して、モアブの手に渡されるのです。」
14 そこで、エリシャは言いました。
「万軍の主が生きておられ、私の立つ前に、ユダの王エホシャファトの存在を顧みないならば、私はあなたの方を見ず、あなたを見もしないことでしょう。
15 しかし、今、私に吟遊詩人を連れてきてください！」
そして、吟遊詩人が演奏すると、主の手が彼の上に臨みました。
16 彼は言いました。
「主はこう仰せられる。この谷を塹壕でいっぱいにしなさい！
17 主はこう言われます。
『あなたがたは風を見ず、雨を見ないが、その谷は水で満たされ、あなたがたも、家畜も、獣も、これを飲むであろう。
18 このことは主の目には軽いことであって、主はまたモアブ人をあなたの手に渡す。
19 あなたがたはすべての城郭と選びの町を打ち壊し、すべての良い木を倒し、すべての水の泉を止め、すべての良い土地に石を積むであろう。』」
20 そして、朝になって供え物をする頃になると、見よ！エドムの道から水が湧いてきて、その地は水に満たされました。
21 さて、モアブ人は皆、王達が自分達と戦うために上って来たことを聞いて、鎧を着ることのできる者、上方の者、みな集まって、国境に立ちました。
22 彼らは朝早く起き上がって来ましたが、太陽が水の上を照らしていたので、モアブ人達は、水が血のように赤いのを見ました。
23 彼らは言いました。
「これは血だ。王達は確かに共に戦い、それぞれその仲間を打った。だから、モアブよ！今こそ戦利品になれ！」
24 彼らがイスラエルの陣営に来た時、イスラエル人は起き上がってモアブ人を打ったので、彼らは彼らの前から逃げ去りました。
そして、彼らはその地、すなわちモアブを激しく打ち破りました。
25 彼らは町々を打ち壊し、すべての良い土地に、みな自分の石を投げて埋ずめ、すべての水の出る所を止め、すべての良い木を倒し、ただキルハレセトとその城壁の石だけが残ったので、投石兵はこれを包囲して打ち壊しました。
26 モアブの王は戦いがあまりに激しいのを見て、剣を持つ者七百人を連れて行き、エドムの王のもとに押し入ろうとしましたができませんでした。
27 そこで、彼は自分の代わりに治めるべき長男を連れ出して来て城壁の上で全焼のいけにえとして捧げました。
そこで、イスラエルの上に大いなる怒りが起こり、彼らは彼から離れて、自分の国に帰って行きました。

8 ユダの王は言った。「行きましょう。私とあなたとは同じようなもの、私の民とあなたの民、私の馬とあなたの馬も同じようなものです。」
9 そして言った。「私たちはどの道を上って行きましょうか。」するとヨラムは、「エドムの荒野の道を」と答えた。
10 それで、イスラエルの王は、「ああ、主が、この三人を召されたのは、モアブの手に渡すためだったのだ」と言った。
11 ヨシャパテは言った。「ここにや主のみこころを求めることのできる主の預言者はいないのですか。」すると、イスラエルの王の家来のひとりが答えて言った。「ここには、シャファテの子エリシャがいます。エリヤの手に水を注いだ者です。」
12 ヨシャパテが、「主のことばは彼とともにある」と言ったので、イスラエルの王と、ヨシャパテと、エドムの王とは彼のところに下って行った。
13 エリシャはイスラエルの王に言った。「私とあなたとの間に何のかかわりがありましょうか。あなたの父上の預言者たちと、あなたの母上の預言者たちのところにおいでください。」すると、イスラエルの王は彼に言った。「いや、主がこの三人の王を召されたのは、モアブの手に渡すためだから。」
14 エリシャは言った。「私が仕えている万軍の主は生きておられる。もし私がユダの王ヨシャパテのためにするのでなかったなら、私は決してあなたに目も留めず、あなたに会うこともしなかったでしょう。
15 しかし、今、立琴をひく者をここに連れて来てください。」立琴をひく者が立琴をひき鳴らすと、主の手がエリシャの上に下り、
16 彼は次のように言った。「主はこう仰せられる。『この谷には水があるれる。あなたがたも、あなたがたの家畜も、獣もこれを飲む。』
17 主がこう仰せられるからだ。『風も見ず、大雨も見ないのに、この谷には水があふれる。あなたがたも、あなたがたの家畜も、獣もこれを飲む。』
18 これは主の目には小さなことだ。主はモアブをあなたがたの手に渡される。
19 あなたがたは、城壁のある町々、りっぱな町々をことごとく打ち破り、すべての良い木を切り倒し、すべての水の源をふさぎ、すべての良い畑を石ころでだいなしにしよう。」
20 朝になって、ささげ物をささげるころ、なんと、水がエドムのほうから流れて来て、この地は水で満たされた。
21 モアブはみな、王たちが彼らを攻めに上って来たことを聞いた。よろいを着ることのできるほどの者は全部、呼び集められ、国境の守備についた。
22 彼が翌朝早く起きてみると、太陽が水の面を照らしていた。モアブは向こう側の水が血のように赤いのを見て、
23 言った。「これは血だ。きっと王たちが切り合って、同士打ちをしたに違いない。さあ今、モアブよ。分捕りに行こう。」
24 彼らがイスラエルの陣営に攻め入ると、イスラエルは立ってモアブを打った。モアブはイスラエルの前から逃げた。それで、イスラエルは攻め入って、モアブを打った。
25 さらに、彼らは町々を破壊し、すべての良い畑にひとりずつ石を投げ捨てて石だらけにし、すべての水の源をふさぎ、すべての良い木を切り倒した。ただキル・ハレセテにある石だけが残ったが、そこも、石を投げる者たちが取り囲み、これを打ち破った。
26 モアブの王は、戦いが自分に不利になっていくのを見て、剣を使う者七百人を引き連れ、エドムの王のところに突き入ろうとしたが、果たさなかった。
27 そこで、彼は自分に代わって王となる長男をとり、その子を城壁の上で全焼のいけにえとしてささげた。このため、イスラエル人に対する大きな怒りが起こった。それでイスラエル人は、そこから引き揚げて自分の国へ帰って行った。

Now Jehoram the son of Ahab began to reign over Israel in Samaria in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and reigned twelve years.
2 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD; but not like his father, and like his mother; for he put away the pillar of Baal that his father had made.
3 Nevertheless he cleaved unto the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, wherewith he made Israel to sin; he departed not therefrom. 
4 Now Mesha king of Moab was a sheep-master; and he rendered unto the king of Israel the wool of a hundred thousand lambs, and of a hundred thousand rams.
5 But it came to pass, when Ahab was dead, that the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel.
6 And king Jehoram went out of Samaria at that time, and mustered all Israel.
7 And he went and sent to Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, saying: 'The king of Moab hath rebelled against me; wilt thou go with me against Moab to battle?' And he said: 'I will go up; I am as thou art, my people as thy people, my horses as thy horses.'
8 And he said: 'Which way shall we go up?' And he answered: 'The way of the wilderness of Edom.'
9 So the king of Israel went, and the king of Judah, and the king of Edom; and they made a circuit of seven days' journey; and there was no water for the host, nor for the beasts that followed them.
10 And the king of Israel said: 'Alas! for the LORD hath called these three kings together to deliver them into the hand of Moab.'
11 But Jehoshaphat said: 'Is there not here a prophet of the LORD, that we may inquire of the LORD by him?' And one of the king of Israel's servants answered and said: 'Elisha the son of Shaphat is here, who poured water on the hands of Elijah.'
12 And Jehoshaphat said: 'The word of the LORD is with him.' So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him.
13 And Elisha said unto the king of Israel: 'What have I to do with thee? get thee to the prophets of thy father, and to the prophets of thy mother.' And the king of Israel said unto him: 'Nay; for the LORD hath called these three kings together to deliver them into the hand of Moab.'
14 And Elisha said: 'As the LORD of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, surely, were it not that I regard the presence of Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, I would not look toward thee, nor see thee.
15 But now bring me a minstrel.' And it came to pass, when the minstrel played, that the hand of the LORD came upon him.
16 And he said: 'Thus saith the LORD: Make this valley full of trenches.
17 For thus saith the LORD: Ye shall not see wind, neither shall ye see rain, yet that valley shall be filled with water; and ye shall drink, both ye and your cattle and your beasts.
18 And this is but a light thing in the sight of the LORD; He will also deliver the Moabites into your hand.
19 And ye shall smite every fortified city, and every choice city, and shall fell every good tree, and stop all fountains of water, and mar every good piece of land with stones.'
20 And it came to pass in the morning, about the time of making the offering, that, behold, there came water by the way of Edom, and the country was filled with water.
21 Now when all the Moabites heard that the kings were come up to fight against them, they gathered themselves together, all that were able to put on armour, and upward, and stood on the border.
22 And they rose up early in the morning, and the sun shone upon the water, and the Moabites saw the water some way off as red as blood;
23 and they said: 'This is blood: the kings have surely fought together, and they have smitten each man his fellow; now therefore, Moab, to the spoil.'
24 And when they came to the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose up and smote the Moabites, so that they fled before them. And they smote the land, even Moab, mightily.
25 And they beat down the cities; and on every good piece of land they cast every man his stone, and filled it; and they stopped all the fountains of water, and felled all the good trees; until there was left only Kir-hareseth with the stones of the wall thereof; so the slingers encompassed it, and smote it.
26 And when the king of Moab saw that the battle was too sore for him, he took with him seven hundred men that drew sword, to break through unto the king of Edom; but they could not.
27 Then he took his eldest son that should have reigned in his stead, and offered him for a burnt-offering upon the wall. And there came great wrath upon Israel; and they departed from him, and returned to their own land.
