「1945年以来、第3次世界大戦は起こりうるか、という問いが幾度も出た。わたしが思うに、わたしたちはもうそのまっただなかにいる。ただ、だれも気づかないだけで、なぜなら、この戦争は領土ではなく、時間の戦争だからだ。わたしたちは、わが子や孫に向かい、来る世代に対して、ようしゃない戦争を引き起こしてしまった。私たちは砂漠と化した世界を子孫に残すことになるだろう。子孫がそこで生きることはたやすいことではない。だが、子孫は応戦できないから、わたしたちはこのままさらに進めていく。もはや、これ以外のことはできない。そして、（黙らせることができないなら）こう聞かせて良心をなだめるのだ。わたしたちが行ったひどいことを償うために、子孫は何か思いつくに違いない、と。」（エンデのメモ箱（上）、田村都志夫訳、岩波書店）

I have learned that if you must leave a place that you have lived in and loved and where all your yesteryears are buried deep, leave it any way except a slow way, leave it the fastest way you can. Never turn back and never believe that an hour you remember is a better hour because it is dead. Passed years seem safe ones, vanquished ones, while the future lives in a cloud, formidable from a distance. The cloud clears as you enter it.
