「まあ、そうだよ。ひとつ、そのしょうこをお目にかけようか……。どなたか、たびたびごめんどうですが、下の応接間に四人のお客さまが待たせてあるんですが、その人たちをここへ呼んでくださいませんか。」
明智は、またまた意外なことをいいだすのです。

館員のひとりが、急いで下へおりていきました。そして、待つほどもなく、階段に大ぜいの足音がして、四人のお客さまという人々が、一同の前に立ちあらわれました。
One of the museum staffs hurried to downstairs and soon with many footsteps, 4 guests Akechi was talking about appreared bofore them.
それを見ますと、一座の人たちは、あまりのおどろきに、「アッ。」とさけび声をたてないではいられませんでした。

まず四人の先頭に立つ白髪白髯の老紳士をごらんなさい。それは、まぎれもない北小路文学博士だったではありませんか。
Look at the man standing ahead with white hair and beard. He was surely Doctor Kitaouji himself.
つづく三人は、いずれも博物館員で、きのうの夕方からゆくえ不明になっていた人びとです。
The other three were the museum staffs who had been missing from last evening.
「この方々は、ぼくが二十面相のかくれがから救いだしてきたのですよ。」
明智が説明しました。
"I rescued these people from Twenty Faces' nest."
Akechi explained it.
しかし、これはまあ、どうしたというのでしょう。博物館長の北小路博士がふたりになったではありませんか。

ひとりは今、階下からあがってきた北小路博士、もうひとりは、さいぜんからズッと明智に手をとられていた北小路博士。

服装から顔形まで寸分ちがわない、ふたりの老博士が、顔と顔を見あわせて、にらみあいました。

「みなさん、二十面相が、どんなに変装の名人かということが、おわかりになりましたか。」
"Everyone, have you gotten how well Twenty Faces can disguise himself?"
明智探偵はさけぶやいなや、いままで親切らしくにぎっていた老人の手を、いきなりうしろにねじあげて、床の上に組みふせたかと思うと、白髪のかつらと、白いつけひげとを、なんなくむしりとってしまいました。その下からあらわれたのは、黒々とした髪の毛と、若々しいなめらかな顔でした。いうまでもなく、これこそ正真正銘の二十面相その人でありました。
The moment he cried out he twisted the old man's arm and held him down on the floor, took the white wig and false beard easily. Jet black hair and young face showed up beneath them. Needless to say, this person was authentic Twenty Faces.
「ハハハ……、二十面相君、ご苦労さまだったねえ。さいぜんからきみはずいぶん苦しかっただろう。目の前できみの秘密が、みるみるばくろしていくのを、じっとがまんして、何くわぬ顔できいていなければならなかったのだからね。

それにしても、館長に化けた二十面相は、なぜもっと早く逃げださなかったのでしょう。ゆうべのうちに、目的ははたしてしまったのですから、三人の替え玉の館員といっしょに、サッサと引きあげてしまえば、こんなはずかしい目に会わなくてもすんだのでしょうに。
