ぼくは地下室にるす番をしているあいだに、酒、さかなの用意をしておきました。そして帰ってきた部下と、ぼくといっしょに残っていた部下と、ぜんぶのものに祝杯をすすめました。
I prepared drinks and sidedishes while I was cooped up in the basement and offered them as a toast to those subordinates who came back and other ones left behind with me.
そこで部下たちは、大事業の成功したうれしさに、むちゅうになって酒もりをはじめたのですが、やがて、三十分ほどもしますと、ひとりたおれ、ふたりたおれ、ついにはのこらず、気をうしなってたおれてしまいました。
They started drinking bout exultantly, tasting the sweets of success. After a half an hour or so, they started to faint one by one, all of them in the end.
なぜかとおっしゃるのですか。わかっているではありませんか。ぼくは賊の薬品室から麻酔剤をとりだして、あらかじめその酒の中へまぜておいたのです。
Are you asking why? It's obvious, isn't it. I have taken some anaesthetic from his medecine storage to put in their drinks beforehand.
それから、ぼくはひとりそこをぬけだして、付近の警察署へかけつけ、事情を話して、二十面相の部下の逮捕と、地下室にかくしてあるぜんぶの盗難品の保管をおねがいしました。
Then I sneaked out to go nearby police station, explained everything, asked to arrest Twenty Faces' subordinates and reposit all those stolen items.
お喜びください。盗難品は完全にとりもどすことができました。国立博物館の美術品も、あの気のどくな日下部老人の美術城の宝物も、そのほか、二十面相が今までにぬすみためた、すべての品物は、すっかりもとの所有者の手に返ります。」
Congratulations. We got all stolen items back. The art from National Museum and the poor old Kusakabe's art castle, and every other things that Twenty Faces had stolen before, all of them can go back to their original owners."
明智の長い説明を、人々は酔ったように聞きほれていました。ああ、名探偵はその名にそむきませんでした。彼は人々の前に広言したとおり、たったひとりの力で、賊の巣くつをつきとめ、すべての盗難品をとりかえし、あまたの悪人をとらえたのです。
All people were listening to Akechi's description as if they got mesmerized. Oh, the great detective didn't disgrace his honour. He found the thief's den, took all stolen items back, caught many criminals as he had promised.
「明智君、よくやった。よくやった。わしはこれまで、少しきみを見あやまっていたようだ。わしからあつくお礼を申します。」
警視総監は、いきなり名探偵のそばへよって、その左手をにぎりました。
"Mr. Akechi, well done. Well done. I might have misjudged you. I'd like express my gratitude."
The chief of Metropolitan Police came close to the detective and took his left hand.
なぜ左手をにぎったのでしょう。それは明智の右手がふさがっていたからです。その右手は、いまだに老博物館長の手と、しっかりにぎりあわされていたからです。みょうですね。明智はどうしてそんなに老博士の手ばかりにぎっているのでしょう。
Why he had to to take his left hand. It was because Akechi's right hand was occupied. That hand was still holding the old director's hand. It's odd. Why Akechi was holding the old doctor's hand?
「で、二十面相のやつも、その麻酔薬を飲んだのかね。きみはさいぜんから部下のことばかりいって、一度も二十面相の名を出さなかったが、まさか首領をとりにがしたのではあるまいね。」
中村捜査係長が、ふとそれに気づいて、心配らしくたずねました。
"But Twenty Faces got that anaesthetic? You haven't talked about Twenty Faces but his subordinates. You must not fail to catch him."
The chief Nakamura realized it and asked anxiously.
「いや、二十面相は地下室へは、帰ってこなかったよ。しかし、ぼくは、あいつもちゃんととらえている。」
明智はにこにこと、例の人をひきつける笑い顔で答えました。
"Twenty Faces didn't come back to the basement. Still I have him all right."
Akechi answered with his usual attracting smile.
「どこにいるんだ。いったいどこでとらえたんだ。」
中村警部が、性急にたずねました。ほかの人たちも、総監をはじめ、じっと名探偵の顔を見つめて、返事を待ちかまえています。
"Where is he? Where did you catch him?"
The chief Nakamura asked urgently. All people including the chief of M.P. were waiting for his answer staring at him.
「ここでつかまえたのさ。」
明智は落ちつきはらって答えました。
"I caught him here."
Akechi answered calmly.
「ここで？ じゃあ、今はどこにいるんだ。」
「ここにいるよ。」
ああ、明智は何をいおうとしているのでしょう。
"Here? Then where is he now?"
"He is here."
Oh, what is Akechi talking about?
「ぼくは二十面相のことをいっているんだぜ。」
警部が、けげん顔で聞きかえしました。
「ぼくも二十面相のことをいっているのさ。」
明智が、おうむがえしに答えました。
"I'm talking about Twenty Faces."
The chief of M.P. asked back dubiously.
"I also am talking about Twenty Faces."
Akechi repeated the chief's word.
