On June 12, 2018, I held a historic summit with Chairman Kim Jong Un of North Korea. One of the outcomes of this bilateral meeting was the recovery and repatriation of the remains of Americans who were prisoners of war or missing in action. Today, Vice President Mike Pence will oversee the return of the remains of fallen American service members to American soil.

The United States owes a profound debt of gratitude to those brave Americans who gave their lives in service to their country. It is a solemn obligation of the United States Government to ensure that the remains are handled with dignity and properly accounted for so their families receive them in an honorable manner. Today’s actions represent a significant first step to recommence the repatriation of remains from North Korea and to resume field operations in North Korea to search for the estimated 5,300 Americans who have not yet returned home.

Melania and I pray that today’s developments will finally provide the Gold Star Families of these courageous soldiers with peace and comfort. May God bless and continue to watch over our Nation’s Armed Forces.

Shut out by Obamacare, millions will get relief

Obamacare has failed to provide affordable, flexible healthcare options for millions of Americans. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, almost 28 million Americans are without insurance coverage today. 

Americans are increasingly being priced out of Affordable Care Act plans. From 2013 to 2017, insurance premiums more than doubled, shutting out tons of middle-class Americans who don’t get subsidies. 

In many communities, options are nonexistent. More than 52 percent of U.S. counties have just one ACA insurer, forcing residents to choose between pricey insurance or nothing at all.

Today, President Trump and his Administration are improving healthcare options for all Americans by issuing a final rule on short-term, limited-duration health plans. The new rule allows for the sale and renewal of plans that cover longer periods than the previous maximum of fewer than three months. This rule will increase choices for Americans facing escalating premiums, creating flexible options that are not currently available in the individual market.

Worker pay hits highest level in a decade

During the nearly 8 years of “recovery” that followed the Great Recession under the previous Administration, one key piece of the economic puzzle was missing: significant wage gains for workers. According to new data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, that’s changed under President Trump.

Wages and salaries rose 0.5 percent last quarter and 2.8 percent during the 12-month period ending in June, CNBC reports. The employment cost index, which measures compensation to workers, hit its highest level since amid the financial crisis in 2008. 

While left-leaning economists claimed that slow growth was inevitable, President Trump said the right policies—tax reform, stronger trade deals, and investment in our workforce—could turn our country around. Last night in Florida, the President announced more progress: 49 additional businesses have signed his Pledge to America’s Workers, building on a day that included signing the Perkins Career and Technical Education Act into law.

Pressure, Time, Ivanka: How a Bipartisan Jobs Bill Got Unstuck

“Nearly everyone involved expected it to be easy,” Emily Wilkins writes in Bloomberg Government about modernizing the Perkins Career and Technical Education Act. “Yet updating the law became a multi-year battle.” Enter Advisor to the President Ivanka Trump, who led a White House effort to get the bill over the finish line.

“Wages and compensation are going up because unemployment is way down,” Jeffry Bartash reports for MarketWatch. The biggest increase came in worker benefits, which rose nearly a full percent last quarter—the largest jump in four years. “Firms have sought to fill openings by offering better benefits such as more vacation time or flexible hours. When push comes to shove, they are offering higher pay,” Bartash writes. 

In the Washington Examiner, Ted Harvey writes that “the EU’s decision to purchase more American products — from natural gas to soybeans — translates to more jobs, higher wages, and sustained economic growth.” The bottom line, according to Harvey? “The ‘America First’ agenda is working.”  

“The president and his administration are standing for our troops at every turn, honoring their service and sacrifice, and creating a stronger America for each of us – and for a better world,” retired Navy intelligence officer Steven Rogers writes in Townhall. “Today, thanks to President Trump’s strong and passionate leadership, many of America’s fallen heroes are finally home.” 

Dr. Robert Kadlec, Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response at HHS, writes in The Hill that “while the U.S. government is better prepared than ever to respond to health impacts of disasters, Americans must keep pace with the very real, unpredictable, serious threats our nation faces.” He urges Congress to do the same.
