The disciples had received the great commission, and now they gathered in one place to pray and to wait and we see an extraordinary thing take place. Amid their waiting, God sends His Spirit and the Church is born. One of the many things that excites us about this passage is that those gathered nearby heard the message in their own language. It’s our prayer that the gospel is proclaimed in the heart language of all throughout the globe and that we communicate in a way that speaks with honor to every culture. We are believing that hearts will be won for Jesus!

First in our friend group to land that dream job.

First to get married.

First to “make it.”

Jesus presented an idea about being first that still sounds radical today: “If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all” (Mark 9:35).

This perspective wasn’t just a new way of thinking, it was a complete reversal of how society thought about success. While many people around Jesus — including his own disciples — fought for positions of honor and influence, Jesus consistently demonstrated his view of greatness by turning down opportunities for power, walking away from crowds wanting to make him famous, and spending time with people who couldn’t perceivably offer him anything.

This wasn’t about lacking ambition or settling for less - it was about understanding that real influence and greatness doesn’t come from pushing yourself into the spotlight, but from serving others and letting them shine.

When Jesus’ followers argued about who was the greatest, he responded by serving them. When opportunities for recognition came his way, he often redirected the attention to others. He showed that true greatness isn’t about climbing to the top of the ladder; it’s about helping others take the next step up.

Pray for Who?

All throughout Jesus’ ministry, He constantly turned things upside down for those listening. The religious leaders at the time had grown distant from following the laws of God. Jesus’ teaching helped bring them back to the heart of the law, but He often did so through surprising ways.

Most of us probably think we do a great job at loving other people. But if we’re being honest, most of us probably spend our time loving those who also love us back. It’s a lot easier to love the people who we’re friends with. When there’s trust built over time and common ground, it’s easy to love.

Jesus says that loving those who love you is not enough. In Luke 6:28, He challenges us even further. He says we’re to bless those who speak negatively about us, and we are to pray for those who mistreat us.

If you’ve ever been mistreated by someone, or had someone speak negatively about you, then you know how hard it can be to love that person. It is hard to love unloving people. And yet, Jesus did exactly that. When we were at our worst, He still loved us.

If you find it hard to bless those who mistreat you, begin with prayer. Between you and God in prayer, ask Him to help soften your heart. Ask Him for justice in a specific situation, but also for there to be restoration.

Every person who exists is a person Jesus wants to love. And when we make steps to love those who are unloving, we’re showing the love of Jesus to someone who needs it. As we take steps to pray for those who mistreat us, we become more like Jesus.

Take a few minutes right now to pray. Ask God to help you grow in love towards those around you. If there is someone who has hurt you, ask God to begin healing your heart. Say a prayer for that person as well. Ask God to be with them, to help them, and to make a way for their heart to be softened as well. Thank Jesus that He loved us even when we were unloving.

When you hear the word success, what do you think of—wealth? power? How do you think God defines success? Micah 6:8 says this: “He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?”

And with Christ as our example, we should strive to be like Him. In today’s passage, we see how Jesus served. He performed the task of the lowliest servant when He took off His outer garment and washed the dirty feet of His followers—the very followers He knew would abandon Him. The next day, the Creator was crucified by people made in His image. In allowing this, He offered salvation to all—even those who nailed Him to a cross.

And Jesus asks that we follow His example of service. With the exception of Judas, His disciples obeyed. In fact, they all suffered because of their faith, many unto death.

Though we likely won’t endure what they did, ask the Lord how He is calling you to serve. In what ways do you spend your resources and time? And which topics dominate your thoughts and conversation? Service is a natural overflow of a relationship with Jesus. Ask Him to foster a servant’s attitude in your heart.
