私はユングの作品をさまざまな形で自分の人生に取り入れてきましたが、その中でも最も困難なものの一つが、私たちが個性化の過程で学んだ価値観を持ち帰り、それを他者と共有するというユングの考え方です。その中でも、他の人が自分の影を見るのを助けることは、人々の信念体系や集団的規範にエゴがどれほど強力に根付いているかという意味で、私にとってかなり啓発的なことでした。次から次へと起こるケースでは、いくらデータや事実、経験的な証拠があっても、自分の信念体系やコンプレックス、洗脳やトラウマなどが原因で現実を見誤っていることを誰かに納得させることはできないことがわかりました。自分自身や他人に対して正直になる方法を見つけたときに初めて、人は心を開き、自分の影と向き合うようになるのです。この正直さは、たいていの場合、エゴを壁にぶつけて膝をつき、新しい可能性に目を向けるという、魂の暗い夜の出来事から生まれます。だからこそ、実際に個性化のプロセスを始める人は少ないし、なかなか進まないのです。

個性化する人].... は、自分の代わりに身代金を提供しなければなりません。つまり、集合的で個人的な領域における自分の不在に相当する代替物である価値を生み出さなければなりません。このような価値観の生成がなければ、最終的な個性化は不道徳であり、それ以上に自殺的である....
社会には権利があるだけでなく、同等の価値を生み出すことができない場合には、個人を非難する義務もあります。価値が創造されない限り、個人化はポーズのままである。

ヒーローの旅について

I’ve integrated Jung’s work into my life in a number of ways and one of the most challenging of those is his idea of how we are to bring back values that we’ve learned in our Individuation process and share them with others. And of those, helping others to see their shadow s been rather enlightening for me in the sense of just how powerfully ingrained the ego is in people’s belief systems and collective norms. In case after case I’ve found that no amount of data, facts or empirical evidence will convince someone that their belief system or their complex or indoctrination or trauma, etc., is causing them to misperceive reality. Its only when they can find a way to become honest with themselves and with others that they begin to open up and face their shadow. And this honesty usually comes out of a dark night of the soul event where their ego is put up against the wall and they’re on their knees – open to new possibilities. This is why so few people actually begin let alone get very far on their Individuation process.

Not the criticism of individual contemporaries will decide the truth or falsity of these discoveries, but future generations. There are things that are not yet true today, perhaps we dare not find them true, but tomorrow they may be. [The individuating person].... must offer a ransom in place of himself, that is, he must bring forth values, which are an equivalent substitute for his absence in the collective, personal sphere. Without this production of values, final individuation is immoral and- more than that-suicidal....
Not only has society a right, it also has a duty to condemn the individuant if he fails to create equivalent values, for he is a deserter.... Individuation remains a pose so long as no values are created.
The individual is obliged by the collective demands to purchase his individuation at the cost of an equivalent work for the benefit of society. Only by accomplishing an equivalent is one exempt from the conventional, collective path. A person [who individuates] must accept the contempt of society until such time as he has accomplished his equivalent. ~Carl Jung, CW 15.
On the Hero's journey:
When Bill Moyers, the executive editor of the film series The Power of Myth, and the interviewer of Joseph Campbell, asked with such visible longing about how the journey is carried forward via the heroic deed, Campbell named two ways. He said: "... [One] is a physical deed, as in saving the life of another. But the second kind is spiritual. It is the one who has learned or found something in the supernormal range of human spiritual life, and then came back and communicated it."

もし私たちが正直でなければ、自分の影に光を当ててくれる人からの建設的な批判に腹を立て、統合作業に進むことができなくなります。
自分に正直になって統合を始めれば、他の人が自分の影を見るのを手伝うことで、他の人にも正直になれます。このプロセスがどのように機能するかを知っているので、プロセスに参加することに何のためらいもありません。
自分の影を見せることは贈り物です。
問題は、この贈り物を受け取るために、どうやってエゴを排除するかということなのです。
To confront a person with his shadow is to show him his own light. Once one has experienced a few times what it is like to stand judgingly between the opposites, one begins to understand what is meant by the self. “If you are dishonest, you are excluded from the individuation process. If you are dishonest, you are nothing for your unconscious. The Great Man will spit on you, and you will be left far behind in your muddle—stuck, stupid, and idiotic.”
“But this integration cannot take place and be put to a useful purpose unless one can admit the tendencies bound up with the shadow and allow them some measure of realization – tempered, of course, with the necessary criticism. This leads to disobedience and self disgust, but also to self-reliance, without which individuation is unthinkable.”
^^ So a large part of shadow work involves first becoming honest with ourselves and with others in order to accept our shadow parts when they become exposed by others who shine the light on them for us. Its only that acceptance that will allow us to then do the inner work to integrate the shadow.
If we’re not being honest we’ll become offended by constructive criticism of others shining the light on our shadow and therefore will not be able to move forward into doing the integration work.
Once we become honest with ourselves and begin integration then we can become honest with others by helping them see their shadow – we know how this process works and will have no qualms about participating in the process.
Being shown our shadow is a gift.
The question is… how to get the ego out of the way so that we may accept the gift.
