樹上の怪人

The mysterious person on the tree

　それから、池の岸で、どんなことがおこったかは、しばらく読者諸君のご想像にまかせます。

  I let the readers imagine freely what happened after that.

　五―六分ののちには、以前の松野運転手が、なにごともなかったように、同じ池の岸に立っておりました。少し息づかいがはげしいようです。そのほかにはかわったところも見えません。

 Five or six minutes later the forementioned driver Matsuno was standing beside the pond like nothing had happened. It seemed he was breathing a little hard. But there was nothing odd other than that.

　彼は、いそいで母屋おもやのほうへ歩きはじめました。どうしたのでしょう。少しびっこをひいています。でも、びっこをひきながら、ぐんぐん庭をよこぎって、表門までやってきました。

 He started waling to the main building. What the matter, he was limping. Still he walked fast and got to the front gate.

　表門には、ふたりの秘書が、木刀ぼくとうのようなものを持って、ものものしく見はり番をつとめています。
　松野はその前まで行くと、何か苦しそうにひたいに手をあてて、
「ぼくは寒気さむけがしてしようがない。熱があるようだ。少し休ませてもらうよ。」
と、力のない声でいうのです。

 There were two secretaries keeping to watch with wood swords in their hands.
 When Matsuno got there put his hand on his forehead.
"I feel very chilly. Maybe I got a fever. I think I need a rest."
He said with a weak voice.

「ああ、松野君か、いいとも、休みたまえ。ここはぼくたちがひきうけるから。」
　秘書のひとりが元気よく答えました。

"Oh, Mr. Matsuno. Yeah, go ahead. We take care here."
 One of the secretaries answered vigorously.

　松野運転手は、あいさつをして、玄関わきのガレージの中へ姿を消しました。そのガレージの裏がわに、彼の部屋があるのです。

The driver Matsuno said goodbye and went to the garage beside the front door. There he had a place for him.

　それから朝までは、べつだんのこともなくすぎさりました。表門も裏門も、だれも通過したものはありません。
　塀外の見はりをしていたおまわりさんたちも、賊らしい人かげには出あいませんでした。

 After that nothing special happened until morning. No one passed through the front or back gate.
 The policemen watching outside didn't see anyone susupicious.

　七時には、警視庁から大ぜいの係官が来て、邸内の取りしらべをはじめました。そして、取りしらべがすむまで、家の者はいっさい外出を禁じられたのですが、学生だけはしかたがありません。門脇かどわき中学校三年生の早苗さんと、高千穂たかちほ小学校五年生の壮二君とは、時間が来ると、いつものように、自動車でやしきを出ました。

 At seven o'clock many policemen came and investigated the whole mansion. Until all had done all the family member had to stay at home but the students couldn't do that. Sanae, third grade at Kadowaki junior high school and Souji, fifth grade at Takachiho elementary school went to school by car on time as usual.

　運転手はまだ元気のないようすで、あまり口かずもきかず、うなだれてばかりいましたが、でも、学校がおくれてはいけないというので、おして運転席についたのです。

 The driver was still dispritted, quiet and drooping but forced himself get in the driver seat because of their study.

　警視庁の中村なかむら捜査係長は、まず主人の壮太郎氏と、犯罪現場の書斎で面会して、事件のてんまつをくわしく聞きとったうえ、ひととおり邸内の人々を取りしらべてから、庭園の捜索にとりかかりました。

 The chief detective at Metropolitan police Nakamura interviewed Soutarou in the study at first learning what happened, investigated the whole people and started search in the garden.

「ゆうべ私たちがかけつけましてから、ただ今まで、やしきを出たものはひとりもありません。塀を乗りこしたものもありません。この点は、じゅうぶん信用していただいていいと思います。」

"Since we got here until now no one left the premise. Nobody climbed over the fence. You can trust that."

　所轄しょかつ警察署の主任刑事が、中村係長に断言しました。
「すると、賊はまだ邸内に潜伏せんぷくしているというのですね。」

The cheif detective at the local police station declared to the cheif Nakamura.
"You mean the culprit is still in this place in hiding."

「そうです。そうとしか考えられません。しかし、けさ夜明けから、また捜索をはじめさせているのですが、今までのところ、なんの発見もありません。ただ、犬の死がいのほかには……。」
「エ、犬の死がいだって？」

"Yes. There is no other way. But although we have started seaching from the dawn we haven't found anything. Other than the dead dog."
"What, the dead dog?"

「ここの家では、賊にそなえるために、ジョンという犬を飼っていたのですが、それがゆうべのうちに毒死していました。しらべてみますと、ここのむすこさんに化けた二十面相のやつが、きのうの夕方、庭に出てその犬に何かたべさせていたということがわかりました。じつに用意周到よういしゅうとうなやり方です。もしここの坊ちゃんが、わなをしかけておかなかったら、やつは、やすやすと逃げさっていたにちがいありません。」

"They bought a dog, John for the attack but it was poisoned last night. As we investigate we found out that Twenty Faces disguised as their son fed the dong in ther garden last evening. He was really well prepared. If that boy didn't set the trap the gang must have escaped easily."
