おとしあな

　さすがの怪盗も、これには胆きもをつぶしました。相手が人間ならばいくらピストルを向けられてもおどろくような賊ではありませんが、古い古い鎌倉時代の観音さまが、いきなり動きだしたのですから、びっくりしないではいられません。

Even for Twenty Faces, it was surprising. If it was a human pointing a gun at him he wouldn't be surprised but it was a very old Budda statue.

　びっくりしたというよりも、ゾーッと心の底からおそろしさがこみあげてきたのです。こわい夢をみているような、あるいはお化けにでも出くわしたような、なんともえたいのしれぬ恐怖です。

 It was rather terrifying from the bottom of the heart than just surprising. It was terrible like a nightmare or seeing a ghost.

　大胆不敵の二十面相が、かわいそうに、まっさおになって、たじたじとあとじさりをして、ごめんなさいというように、ろうそくを床において、両手を高くあげてしまいました。

 The very bold Twenty Faces got pale miserably, stumble back, putting the candle on the floor and raised his both hands high as if he was apologizing.

　すると、またしても、じつにおそろしいことがおこったのです。観音さまが、れんげの台座からおりて、床の上に、ヌッと立ちあがったではありませんか。そして、じっとピストルのねらいをさだめながら、一歩、二歩、三歩、賊のほうへ近づいてくるのです。

 Then something horrible happened again. The statue stepped down from the pedestal and stood up on the floor unexpectedly. As it kept pointing the gun at him it started taking one, two, three steps to him.

「き、きさま、いったい、な、何者だっ。」
　二十面相は、追いつめられたけもののような、うめき声をたてました。

"You, you, bastard, who the hell are you?"
Twenty Faces gave a groan like a beast driven into a corner.

「わしか、わしは羽柴家のダイヤモンドをとりかえしに来たのだ。たった今、あれをわたせば、一命を助けてやる。」
　おどろいたことには、仏像がものをいったのです。おもおもしい声で命令したのです。

"I have come here to take the diamonds back. Giving them to me now and you'll be alive."
To his surprise, the statue ordered him in a very heavy voice.

 「ハハア、きさま、羽柴家のまわしものだな。仏像に変装して、おれのかくれがをつきとめに来たんだな。」

"I see, you are sent by Hasibas. Coming here to check my place in disguise as the statue."

　相手が人間らしいことがわかると、賊は少し元気づいてきました。でも、えたいのしれぬ恐怖が、まったくなくなったわけではありません。というのは、人間が変装したのにしては、仏像があまり小さすぎたからです。立ちあがったところを見ると、十二―三の子どもの背たけしかありません。その一寸法師いっすんぼうしみたいなやつが、落ちつきはらって、老人のようなおもおもしい声でものをいっているのですから、じつになんとも形容のできないきみ悪さです。

 Once he found out the it was a human he got recovered his strength. Still he had some fear because it was too short for a human. It got only 12 or 13 years old boys hight. The dwarf-like thing being calm and speaking in deep voice was really creepy.

「で、ダイヤモンドをわたさぬといったら？」
　賊はおそるおそる、相手の気をひいてみるように、たずねました。

"If I said no?"
 The thief asked fearfully trying to attract it's attention.

「おまえの命がなくなるばかりさ。このピストルはね、いつもおまえが使うような、おもちゃじゃないんだぜ。」

"You just loose your life, that's all. This gun is not a toy like yours."

　観音さまは、このご隠居然とした白髪の老人が、そのじつ二十面相の変装姿であることを、ちゃんと知りぬいているようすでした。たぶん、さいぜんの手下の者との会話をもれ聞いて、それと、察したのでしょう。

It seemed like this Budda statue knew the old retiree was a Twenty Faces' disguise. It might have heard his conversation with his subordinates and comprehend.
