　よしありげな刀剣とうけん、甲冑かっちゅう、置き物、手箱の類、びょうぶ、掛け軸などが、ところせましとならんでいるいっぽうのすみに、高さ一メートル半ほどの、長方形のガラス箱が立っていて、その中に、問題の観世音像が安置してあるのです。

 It was full of swords, suits of armor, ornaments, boxes, folding screens and scrolls, all looked prestigious. And in one corner there was The Kanzeon statue in a one-and-a-half merter high glass box.

　れんげの台座の上に、ほんとうの人間の半分ほどの大きさの、うす黒い観音様がすわっておいでになります。もとは金色こんじきまばゆいお姿だったのでしょうけれど、今はただ一面にうす黒く、着ていらっしゃるひだの多い衣ころもも、ところどころすりやぶれています。でも、さすがは名匠めいしょうの作、その円満柔和えんまんにゅうわなお顔だちは今にも笑いだすかと思われるばかり、いかなる悪人も、このお姿を拝しては、合掌がっしょうしないではいられぬほどにみえます。

 Half a human sized dark Budda statue was sitting on a lotus shaped pedestal. Maybe it used to be brilliant golden color but now it's just dark color and the clothe with many pleats were worn out in some places. Still it was by hand of the master craftman, the counenance was so peaceful and tender that it looked almost smiling, it would make even a villan to worship with folded hands.

　三人の泥棒は、さすがに気がひけるのか、仏像の柔和なお姿を、よくも見ないで、すぐさま仕事にかかりました。
「ぐずぐずしちゃいられねえ。大いそぎだぜ。」

Even the three thieves might feel awkward, they started working imidiately without looking at the tender Budda statue.
"We have no time to linger. Hurry."

　ひとりが持ってきたうすぎたない布のようなものをひろげますと、もうひとりの男が、そのはしを持って、仏像のガラス箱の外を、ぐるぐると巻いていきます。たちまち、それとわからぬ布包みができあがってしまいました。

 One of them unfolded a rag, other one picked up the end of it and wrapped the glass box of the statue. Soon there was just a packet you never know what there was in it.

「ほら、いいか。横にしたらこわれるぜ。よいしょ、よいしょ。」
　傍若無人のかけ声までして、三人のやつはその荷物を、表へ運びだします。

"Hey, alright? It'll be broken if we put it on the side. Heigh-ho! Heigh-ho!"
With some rude calls, they started bringing the packet out.

　壮太郎氏と近藤老人は、それがトラックの上につみこまれるまで、三人のそばにつききって、見はっていました。仏像だけ持ちさられて、壮二君がもどってこないでは、なんにもならないからです。

Soutarou and Kondou were sticking to them cautiously until they brought it to the truck. There was no point if they took the statue and there was no Souji.

　やがて、トラックのエンジンが、そうぞうしくなりはじめ、車は今にも出発しそうになりました。

 Soon the engine of the truck started making big noises and it looked almost get started.

「おい、壮二さんはどこにいるのだ。壮二さんをもどさないうちは、この車を出発させないぞ。もし、むりに出発すれば、すぐ警察に知らせるぞ。」
　近藤老人は、もう、一生けんめいでした。

"Hey, where is Souji. Until you give him back we won't let the car start. If you forced to go we notify the police now."
 Kondou was desperate.

「心配するなってえことよ。ほら、うしろを向いてごらん。坊ちゃんは、もうちゃんと玄関においでなさらあ。」
　ふりむくと、なるほど、玄関の電燈の前に、大きいのと小さいのと、二つの黒い人かげが見えます。

"Don't worry. Look, turn back. Your son is already at the front door."
When they turned back sure enough, there were big and small, two silhouettes under the light of the front door.

　壮太郎氏と老人とが、それに気をとられているうちに、
「あばよ……。」
　トラックは、門前をはなれて、みるみる小さくなっていきました。

 While Soutarou and Kondou were distructed by it,
"Bye."
The truck left the gate and got farther and farther.

　ふたりは、いそいで玄関の人かげのそばへひきかえしました。
「おや、こいつらは、さっきから門のところにいた親子の乞食じゃないか。さては、いっぱい食わされたかな。」

 The two of them rushed to those silhouette.
"Look, these two are the beggars whove been near the gate. So we might have deceived."
