Appreciate Greece and Greek civilization
In my history learning experience, Greek civilization is probably the most impressive history that I have learned. From the period, the ancient democracy and freedom was practices. Boys and girls were cultivated under strict military education in Sparta. The education which based on the gymnasium training was encouraged in different polis. The ancient Olympics can also date back to this period. I still remember one of the pictures in my history book, people in ancient Greek were in a good shape and girls were equipped with spears, which impress me a lot. I am surprised that democracy burgeoning since 6th BC, and also interested in knowing more about Greek civilization, learning exact situation which contribute to the booming. Thus the reasons above encourage me to choose the book Greek and Greek civilization written by Jacob Burckhardt who was one of the excellent historians of classical and renaissance culture, he stated the ancient Greek culture as an aristocratic world based on a ruthless competition for honor, a competition, in turn, led to a tyrannous state with minimal personal freedoms. During my reading process, it just like detailed lectures which were given by authors, urging me to read more and more.
After I finish reading the book, the agonal age, the aristocracy, freedom the democracy, were the four key themes which reflect the directions of the period. The agonal age means the gymnastic agon. At that time, people were religious and the basic aim to hold Olympics games was to show respect to the divine god. Besides, they wanted to develop the body to the highest perfection. All the qualified citizens were encouraged to take part in games like foot race, wresting, boxing, throwing the discus or chariot. There were gymnasia even in the most insignificant towns. The agon brook down enmity between tribes and united the whole nations both participants and spectators. However, gymnastics was in itself a popular activity, but in its advanced stage is an aristocratic one. Usually, the freemen’s sons would be handed over to the teacher of gymnastics, and received their entire education from him, only the fairly wealthy could spend their whole life in this way. That is to say, the aristocrat have more easy access to those activities and to some extent gymnastic games are aristocratic activities. Moreover, with the widely participation in the sports and practice in democracy, which promote the sovereign rights of civils, freedom-pursuing spirits of Greek develops a lot. The budding of democracy develops with the chase for freedom. Although different polis took different political system, but in general, democracy was put into practice, especially in Athens which Follows democracy system, which is the earliest attempt to democracy.
When it comes to the exact situation which impacted me, the agon was so popular in people that gymnastic agon came to be held at important funerals, which was a good way to honor the dead, and a wise way to assemble Greeks to ensure the attendance. It indicates that people love and advocate gymnastic agon at that period so much that the love can even across the life. Moreover, we can infer that gymnastic agon need to assemble and people should work in unity to accomplish the activities. Compared with the custom in my nation today, when the one who I love die, as the member of the dead family, we all in sad emotion, and be sorry for people’s death, we cannot accept to hold large-scale gymnastic agon, and we do not think that it is proper to let events which supposed to be celebrated happen, let alone by holding fierce competition ways like gymnastic agon. On the contrary, people who live together are willing to come consciously to ensure the funeral’s process. At the same time, the relatives will wait in the side, make no noise or comfort the family members of the death while the Greek think gymnastic agon is an honor for the death. Therefore, put me into Greek’s shoes, it seems unreasonable to mesmerize the death in this way, I would refuse to attend the games in the case. But as for the gymnastic agon itself, I am enthusiastic in sports, especially running and tennis. Personally, participating in sports is healthy and can help me to relax, thus I guess I will interested in taking part in those sports at that time, especially in a democracy state like Athen. Generally, cultural differences impress me and we should understand each other instead of misunderstanding.
Finally, both agon and democracy repeat through time to today’s world. Olympic games can date back to the ancient Greek where sports developed as I mentioned above. Even some specific sports like foot racing, wresting are kept and the ritual that carrying the torch around different places to inform people is continuing. Apparently, today’s games are more widely and diverse and focus more on peace and sports itself while people dedicate to a perfect shape and gymnastics are aristocratic activities in ancient Greek. Besides, Greek democracy is the earliest civilization for today’s democracy system which was put into practice toward more detailed aspects, especially in countries like America that stress democracy a lot. As a peek of civilization not only in western countries, Greek civilization set models for today’s life with its great achievement in history.

The dead and the social value in ancient Egyptian inscriptions

The dead and the social value in ancient Egyptian inscriptions
The Book of the Dead, which includes the Great Hymn of Osiris and snatches of description of the great leader, completes a record of Osiris’s experience. In some degree, it integrates the ancient Egyptian mythology system by interweaving snatches of ancient tales, and therefore, it represents the social values of ancient Egyptians as ethic codes based on theory of spirit. From this the Book of the Dead to autobiographies during the Old Kingdom period, ancient Egyptian literatures reflect the impact of concentration of authority on the social value of ancient Egyptians’.
The theory of spirit lays the ground for telling good and evil in ancient Egypt, which is also reflected in Osiris’s experience. Ancient Egyptians didn’t regard death as the end of life, but instead believing all creatures are in circulations like the nature phenomenon because of their nature worship. This theory is also reflected by Osiris’s murder and reincarnation.
Since ancient Egyptians thought people has spirit and an afterlife, good deeds done in worldly life therefore became the criteria of entrance another life. After Osiris became the god of the underworld, every soul before going to another world should have a judgment in front of him. Chapter 125 of The Book of the Dead reserves a series of questions and two declarations of innocence, which is helpful for us to understand the moral value in the ancient Egypt. The text set down an inclusive standard of general statements about what was and what was not acceptable behavior—for example, one would declare “I have not caused tears” and “I have not done any harm.” It also records some very specific wrong doings. For example, it mentioned crimes of a cultic nature like stealing from temple offerings or offerings to the dead, blasphemy, and for economic crimes, one should deny cheating with the grain measure or the plummet of the balance. One has not done these evil deals but instead conducting good deeds would be allowed to live in the underworld towards eternity. The judgment of Osiris reveals that in ancient Egypt, people have already established a theory of spirit and on the base of it built up moral codes which reward the good and punish the bad.
Similar statements can also be seen in Weni’s inscription: “I rescued the weak from one stronger than he as much as in my power. I buried who has no son.” It can be deduced that these social values became clichés in autobiographies during that time, as terms describe ideal behavior in such biographies, including justice, honesty, fairness, mercy, kindness and generosity. But Harhuf’s autobiography starts with long pharaoh-oriented prayers that reflects the moral standard people in six Dynasty in the Old Kingdom Egypt valued: one be praised by the king. In the Book of the Dead we can see that all ancient Egyptian love their gods and they believed that looking out for others was a good moral model in his life. However in those autobiographies, pharaohs’ desire became the standard.
At the beginning, many gods’ participation in the judgment shows us the tradition of multi-god in ancient Egyptian’s value. Yet, as Osiris takes the main role, it also represents the transition from multi-god to the situation of power centralization. The good variety of “labor division” among ancient Egyptian gods was derived from a tribe culture prior to the formation of a central power, when every tribe has their own god. Later on, this value was replaced by concentrating the power on one role, which is also reflected by the success of Osiris’s son.
In the Old Kingdom period, the worship of the god of the sun was on its rise and pharaoh claimed to be the son of the god. It can be seen that amid the Six Dynasty, pharaoh has already gained a lot of power and became ‘the god on the earth.’ Pharaohs determine how people live up to the ma’at. As Nefer-seshem-re’s inscription records: “having done ma'at for its lord, having satisfied him with that which he desires." This centralization is evident in autobiographies. The traditional funerary prayer usually begins with sentence like “an offering the king grants.” In the Autobiography of Weni, the respect for Egypt kings, pharaohs, is amplified by repetition. A lot of paragraphs end with sentence like “I was excellent in his majesty’s heart; I was rooted in his majesty’s heart; his majesty’s heart was filled with me.”
All in all, Ancient Egyptian literature mirrors the transition in the Old Kingdom era, and faithfully records how this outer environment shaped people’s values.

Screw rotation analysis report
The Turn of the Screw is a famous novella written by novelist Henry James. Since its appearance in 1899, it has received such great attention that the studies on The Turn of the Screw have been diversified ever since. Many critics have been trying to analyze the novella from the angles such as analysis of heroine’s characteristics, analysis of the novella’s structure, analysis of the novella’s techniques, etc. The author tries to analyze the novella in the psychoanalytic perspective, holding the view that the unnamed governess, the heroine, is a promiscuous woman and experiences several different mental processes in different periods. The essay is divided into four parts, including the summary of the novella, the introduction of the psychoanalytic criticism, the psychoanalytic analysis of the novella and the conclusion, because an application of Frued’s theory to The Turn of Screw proves that subconscious desires often control behavior in abnormal ways.
The Summary of the Novella
The Turn of the Screw mainly tells a story of a governess who takes the job of teaching and taking care of one beautiful eight-year-old girl named Flora and her ten-year-old brother. At the beginning, the young governess with no name met with a man, who was the children’s uncle on London’s Harley Street, for her first governess job. The young woman was very fond of him and thus the man was able to persuade her to accept the job of governess to his niece and nephew in his countryside house Bly. One situation should be noticed and mentioned: the young governess cannot contact him in the future and has to solve all the problems by herself. In one evening when she walks around the house and sees a man in one of the towers of the house, she thinks it were the children’s uncle at first but then she finds that she is wrong as it is a stranger. She is told that the man is the uncle’s former valet Peter Quint, who has been dead, when she talks the man with the housekeeper Mrs. Grose. Mrs. Grose also tells the governess that Peter spent a lot of time with Miles Before. Over time, she finds the other ghost named Miss Jessel as well. Thinking the two ghosts will hurt the two children; the governess decides to fight against the ghosts to protect the two children. However, with the development of the novella, the governess finds that two children’s behaviors are becoming odd, and seem to be possessed by the ghosts. The novella’s atmosphere becomes nervous, just like the screw is turned more and more tensional.
Upon the novella’s publication, it attracts large numbers of critics’ attention and study. Some say the governess is a warm and kind person who fights against the ghost consistently to protect the children, while some think that the governess is mentally abnormally, holding the idea that what she sees the ghost is her illusion produced by her mental illness. I agree with the later idea and try to analyze the governess’s mental processes with theory of psychoanalytic criticism.
Psychoanalytic Criticism
The Turn of the Screw is either an outstanding example of the type of ghost novella written at the end of the 19th century or is a classic psychoanalytic study. When studying the novella in the perspective of psychoanalysis, the novella pays attention to sexual repression and the sources of insanity. Thus, based on the features of the Turn of the Screw that needs the theory of psychoanalytic criticism, it should introduce the nature of psychoanalytic criticism first.
Psychoanalytic criticism is form of literary interpretation that employs the terms of psychoanalysis (including the unconsciousness, repression, the Oedipus complex, etc.) in order to illuminate aspects of literature in its connection with conflicting psychological states (1900). The beginnings of this modern tradition are found in Frued’s The Interpretation of Dreams, which provides as “displacements” of repressed wishes or anxieties (1900). In the essay “The Ambiguity of Henry James”, Wilson interprets the ghosts in the Turn of the Screw as imaginary projections of the governess’s repressed sexual desires.
Psychoanalysis of the Novella
The young governess in the novella has mental illness, which is produced by her subconscious mind. As we know, Frued takes the subconscious system as a big house, which is full of the governess’s admiration and love to the children’s uncle. The governess, born into a poor family, gets her first job and finds her master in the future is a gentleman, who is very handsome and vigorous as well as single. The governess has never seen such a good man in reality except for in her dream or in the novel. The words that I am easily smitten to someone, and I am smitten to one person in London largely reflect her unconscious love to the male master. In the Victorian era, the sense of class is pretty strong. The governess has no qualification to express her love to the man because of her poor family. Thus, the traditional concepts and the sense of inferiority cannot realize her dream but force her love to stay in her subconscious mind.
In the novella, we can see that the governess arrange herself in the place of lover in order to make her position close to the man’s position. When she arrives at Bly, she not only plays as the two children’s governess, but also moves the little girl’s bed into her room. She tries to play the role of mother, governess and lover or even the representative of the children. She says: “I have an illusion that we are the passengers in a floating boat. As for me, I am the captain” (The Turn of Screw, 59), which shows that she takes herself as a big heroine to save the world and the ghosts she imagined are just to present her charming and thus she can win the master’s love . The governess thinks the objective things or others’ behaviors as those things she has as well, to conceal her own inner weakness and wins the satisfaction of replacement and thus reduces her inner anguish.
Meanwhile, after meeting the failure from Flora, the governess becomes a strange “monster”, which is situated in the conflicts between “inner ego” and “super ego”. When Flora leaves away, she is worried about Flora, not because Flora is her student but because she concerns that Flora is so smart that she will persuade her uncle to fire her. So she stays at Bly to win Miles’ trust and support. However, she is so crazy that she forces Miles to admit he has some connection with Quint to establish a brave impression before the man.
The novella’s story is not complex, but it wins a great success of describing the heroine’s inner feelings and dramatical psychology. Overreading the novella, the novella just involves four roles and a couple of ghosts, but the whole novella cannot leave away the descriptions of heroine’s inner psychology. For example, when she met Flora, she was deeply fascinated with the girl, saying she is indeed a lovely and calm girl, a Christ child of Raphael (The Turn of Screw, 31); when she met Miles, she was almost infatuated, because “he is so sunny and gives out pure fragrance, beautifully and unbelievably” (The Turn of Screw, 32). These psychological descriptions are so beautiful and attractive, representing the governess’s love to the children at the first sight. There are still many other psychological descriptions, which can reveal the governess’s different inner feelings and psychology completely.
Conclusion
The Turn of the Screw is both a ghost novella and a psychological drama about the disastrous effects of Victorian sexual attitudes. Meanwhile, Frued’s psychoanalytic theory, especially the psychoanalytic criticism, paves a path to know the governess for us. The theory provides an essential perspective to analyze human being’s spirit and mentality, and plays a profound role on the literature. Besides, it is Frued’s theory that lets readers go into the governess’ of the Turn of the Screw inner world and explore her mental processes in the whole novella. The novella is full of psychological descriptions and truth, so it is really worth reading and rereading plus studying. Human beings can still live if short of arts and literature, while the interest of life will reduce largely if lack of literature and arts, which can bring massive pleasure and wisdom to human beings. The Turn of Screw, full of many life principles, is a good choice to go towards the further life in the future.

Reading reports and comments: Before I was thrown into the river and before drowning

下面为大家整理一篇优秀的essay代写范文 -- Reading reports and comments: Before I was thrown into the river and before drowning,文章讲述《我被饿死了》和《溺水之前》这本独特的故事发表在《我们如何饥饿》一书中。

Reading reports and comments: Before I was thrown into the river and before drowning

The unique story After I Was Thrown in the River and Before I Drowned was published in the book How We Are Hungry. The author is Dave Eggers, who is good at using different perspectives to attract a lot of readers. In the story, it is about using the mind of a dog to depict the ideal life. The dog likes running, where he can find lots of joy beneath them. However, he was unable to understand that squirrels and the man. Men went insane and selfish. He was thrown into the river by the man and thought a lot before he drowned. Running is the attitude of the dog’s life. Also God is the sun. Just do what you love under thing is quiet amazing.
The setting of this story mainly takes place in the woods and rivers. After the dog was thrown in the river and before he drowned, there is a time of meditation. The story uses its own way to create vivid characters.
The dog is the major character while squirrels, the man and other dogs are minor characters. It is all about the story of a dog, which uses his mind to taste a different life. The squirrels were always laughing at him when he was jumping. The man is the killer of him. The other dogs are running companies. Among them, protagonist is the dog. The man and squirrels turn out to be antagonists. The squirrels seem to be static. The dog is always dynamic.
At the very first beginning of the story, Steven introduced himself and regarded him as a fast dog. He expressed how he loves running over and over again. It describes as the trees like a missile, he loves to run with his claws reaching and grabbing so quickly. The conflict happens when the fisherman lifted him from the water, and then takes him to the place with cages. The dog’s running to the woods and racing Edward arrive at the rising action. He feel good and does not know why the squirrels do not run and jump. Instead, the squirrels are making fun of them.
The climax is a little bit dramatic. The dog races Susan. Accidentally, Susan did not manage to make a perfect jump. Her leg is broken and bleeding from the joint. However, the squirrels are still laughing. Franklin becomes very angry crush them in his jaws. Later, squirrel-killing happens again while racing.
The falling action appears after the dog’s death. He did not expect so many things happened. He was still there and inside his body for a long time and could not understand why the man was kicking him. Also he could not understand the squirrels do not jump.
The resolution comes to the end. The dog still likes running and keeps great attitude of living in freedom. He believes God is the sun.
A charismatic dog in life, Steven played an outsized role in pursing the happiness of freedom and running. He has such a sweet heart and treats others well. I will strongly recommend this book to my friends due to a lot reasons. I just love the way of how the story proceed .There is no point in denying that it is a state of the art story, which has a unique perspective. The meaning of life lies in the story.
My overall response to the book is interesting. Mr Dave Eggers is capable of using the funny expressions to describe a happy dog’s life and confusion. The words of the self-introduction at the beginning can easily catch readers’ hearts.
The strength of the book is that it takes a different perspective to tell the meaning of life. While from what I can tell, the weakness of the story is that the sentences are sometimes overlapping. It mentioned once and twice. Later, it mentioned over and over again. I do hold the view that many readers will get bored when they spot many fast dogs in the story.
As far as I am concerned, the part I thought was great was the last five paragraphs. After his death, we can get a lot of thoughts from the dog. The description is detailed and subtle.
Here, I want you to know that the story is not just telling the dog’s life. It can really reflect our human beings lives. Try to realize what you really love and go for it. Like the former CEO of Apple Company, Steve Jobs famously remarked, the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you have not found them, keep looking, do not settle. The dog likes running. Running is his happiness. We can understand and just live our lives like the dog. Be happy. Do not look around the others. No matter how others view your love and dream. Even make fun of them. Do not lose faith. Because only by this way can make your life a true one.
After I Was Thrown in the River and Before I Drowned is such an amazing story. It is my inspiration down the road.

About Project Boeing Company

About Project Boeing Company
As an American multinational corporation that designs, manufactures and sells fixed-wing aircraft, rotorcraft, rockets and satellites, Boeing Company was founded in Seattle, Washington and has a long history about 100years.
Boeing is among the largest global aircraft manufacturers, is the second-largest aerospace & defense contractor in the world based on 2012 revenue and is the largest exporter in the United States by dollar value. Boeing is organized into five primary divisions: Boeing Commercial Airplanes (BCA); Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS); Engineering, Operations & Technology; Boeing Capital; and Boeing Shared Services Group. In 2013, Boeing recorded $86.623 billion in sales, ranked 30th on the Fortune magazine "Fortune 500" list (2013), ranked 95th on the "Fortune Global 500" list (2013), and ranked 26th on the "World's Most Admired Companies" list (2013).
After analyzing various documents and financial reports, I hold a positive attitude towards Boeing Company’s performance in the future. It can continue its success in the coming years due to both external and internal factors. From the external environment, political and financial, the rise of new airline business models and rapid growth of air travel in the world’s emerging economies are stabilizing worldwide demand for airplane. Second, there is a surge in the US defense spending. From 2011 to 2012, the budget for the department of defense has a 3.4% increase. It is predicted that defense budget will continue increasing. Third, from the internal perspective, Boeing Company has made great efforts to enlarge its business and earn more revenues. It focuses on research and development activities, such as innovative technologies, improved processes and the creation of new products. All these give Boeing Company a competitive advantage when compared with other aircraft companies. Finally, based on the annual report of 2008 to 2013, I make the financial forecast of Boeing Company. The data in balance sheet, income statement and cash flow make me feel more confident about the company’s future. All in all, Boeing Company will have an impressive development in the future.
Forecast:
I observed the data in balance sheet, income statement and the statement of cash flow, and then I look for their change track. From the income statement, the net sales have a continuous increase from 2008 to 2013 with a slight decrease in 2010. Then, I calculate the average growth rate of net sales and use it to get net sales of 2014 and 2015. Because Boeing Company has launched many strategies to enlarge its business, I forecast a bigger increase for its revenues. Utilizing this method, I get all future date.
Assumption
a.Sales growth rate:
Firstly, I get the difference of 2009and 2008’s net sales and divide the result by 2008’s net sales. This result is the growth rate in 2009. Using this method, I get all growth rates from 2009 to 2013 and calculate the average growth rate. After researching the data and the potential trend, I predict a similar growth rate in 2014. Boeing Company will enact the same business strategies to expend its global market. In addition, in 2014 and 2015, Obama administration is still in office. Therefore, the national defense plan will not have dramatic change. So, I predict 2014’s sales growth rate will be.
