How to find suitable literature for Essay?

How to find suitable literature for Essay?

  ①、reading list

The way World War I changed the world

The way World War I changed the world

Politically, firstly, rivalry between the victors and the defeated was not eliminated because the end of the war. Rather, the victors made efforts to strip German of its military power and territory in the treaty, creating bitterness and betrayal, which laid the foundation for the Second World War. Secondly, the war pushed up the number of wounded civilians and soldiers and lead to revolution. In Russia, the communist party overturned the provisional government which persisted to continue the war, which leaded to the birth of the first communist party and the rivalry between the capitalism countries and communist countries in the mid and late 20th century. Thirdly, many of the participant countries had oversea colonies and the war weakened their control on their colonies, which created objective conditions for those colonial countries to win independence. On the other hand, nominally, according to treaty, the defeated countries’ colonies were taken over by the victor countries “until they were judged ready for independence”. However, actually, the treaty was merely redistributing the colonies among the capitalism countries. For instance, in China, the Germany colony Tsingtao was taken over by Japan, which provided facility with Japan to invade China in the Second World War.
Economically, since many civilians and famers were recruited and died in the battle field (8.5 million soldiers died and 21 million were wounded), and those who were not died in the battle field were threatened by starvation, disease, and slaughter. As a result, farmland was destroyed and houses were desolated because of the death of farmers and civilians. In addition, since many of the factories were transformed into military production, goods and materials for civil use were in shortage, which pushed up the inflation rate, subjecting people to poverty and helplessness. Nonetheless, America and Japan profited from this war. By exporting weapons and goods to the participant countries, America earned large amount of trade surplus. From June of 1914 to June of 1917 America had exported 6.9 dollars of goods, and which strengthen its pace to dominate to world economy. Just as what has been mentioned above, Japan took over China’s Tsingtao in the name of the League of Nations and profited from exploiting natural resources in the colony.
Socially, firstly, unprecedented casualties caused social trauma. Soldiers who survived in the battle field were psychologically ill. Civilians, though did not saw the front, were overwhelmed by the sadness of the society as a whole, desiring long-lasting peace and showing aversion to war. This was characterized by the fact that, in the beginning of the Second World War, France was reluctant to mobilize their people to take part in to war for self-defense, which gave facility to Germany to defeat it in merely 40 days. Secondly, some technology and science surged in the war for military use, such as jetfighters, technology for naval vessels and medicine were transformed into civil use. To this extent, the society did benefit from the war. Thirdly, weapons unused or unexploded in to war were buried into the soil or dumped into the sea, which threatened the civilians and environment. It is said that more than 124,000 tons of gas were produced by the end of World War One and most of the unused German chemical weapon Warfare agents were dumped into the Baltic Sea. Thus, it was devastating to the society and environment.
In conclusion, politically, economically and socially, the First World War was changing the world landscape and people’s psychology. The world was more tightly linked together and globalized in a rapid pace.

The novel "Ugly Man"

The novel "Ugly Man"

The novel “Uglies” written by Scott Westerfeld is reminiscent of the novel “The Lord of Flies”. The novel “Uglies” depicts the attempt to build a Utopia of perfect-looking people, but some rebel. Tally is about to turn sixteen, and she can't wait. In Tally's world, your sixteenth birthday brings an operation that turns you from a repellent ugly into a stunningly attractive pretty and catapults you into a high-tech paradise where your only job is to have a really great time. In just a few weeks Tally will be there. But Tally's new friend Shay isn't sure she wants to be pretty. She'd rather risk life on the outside. When Shay runs away, Tally learns about a whole new side of the pretty world -- and it isn't very pretty. The authorities offer Tally the worst choice she can imagine: find her friend and turn her in, or never turn pretty at all. The choice Tally makes changes her world forever.
This is similar with that of the “The Lord of Flies”. The novel also aims at comparing the Utopia on the island with the innate behavior of the children. The children are usually the representatives of order, purity but they have indulged into barbarism on the isolated island. The children are the rebels of the Utopia. At the very beginning of the novel, all the scenery on the island seems to be so beautiful and the children are free to enjoy. In the novel, the boys first find themselves in a tropical paradise: bananas, coconuts, and other fruits which are profusely available. The sea proffers crabs and fish in tidal pools all serve as great fun for the boys. However, the contemporary peace is broken by the children themselves. The split into two groups which symbolizing civilization and barbarism. The group of Jack is obsessed with the excitement of killing and Jack is passionate with the leader role. Jack’s choice of hunting, killing has finally led to the death of one of his friends. But he is not regretful and shameful for his choice. He regards his behavior as a kind of triumph. He pretends to behave as the adults. The strong desire of control is similar with the intense desire of Tally. Both of them have firm conviction but they have chosen the unreasonable and incorrect way to satisfy their desire. And the Ralph is similar with Shay. They both firmly stick to the rules and morality in the society. They have the ability to control the inner impulse to avoid going astray. Jack has become the person who has gratified his inner impulse by killing one of his friends. The tragedy in Jack is the same with the tragedy in Tally. Jack and Tally are both the victims of the distorted world value held by them. They both suffer the mental torture in the pursuit of the inner irresistible desire. They both become the victims of their choice. They are unable to conquer the vicious and immoral call in the inner heart. They have connived the unreasonable and invalid call
Besides, the similarity also resides in the images, the protagonists all are children. Indeed, the value held by the children will mould a different personal world. Jack and Tally holds the view that they can obtain what they want most by short-circuits which are unavailable from the adult. For Tally, she is eager to become pretty to enter a paradise instantly. The inner call is so intense that she is unable to resist. For Jack, he is eager to enjoy the pleasure of being a leader and doing what he wants at will without the social constraints. The choice of the special image by the author is consistent. The image of the children can achieve better effect in emphasizing what the author wants to expose.
The novel makes the readers to contemplate the serious issue about how to educate the children to help them to develop the ability of distinguishing the right from the wrong, thus avoiding going astray in confrontation with various temptations in the world.

The most reliable explanation of the current status of American unions

下面为大家整理一篇优秀的essay代写范文 -- The most reliable explanation of the current status of American unions,本文讲述在美利坚合众国,劳资市场化程度高,个人主义强的雇主和雇员之间总是存在冲突。

The most reliable explanation of the current status of American unions

Introduction
In the United of America, there have always been conflicts between employers and employees with high level of labor force marketization and strong individualism. Facing with powerful employers who possess the means of production, an individual employee has an extremely low power. Any resistance or dissatisfaction in the contest between labor and management seems like a mantis that tries to stop a chariot. Confronting with such a wide gap of powers, the US labor unions have found out a rational existence and progressively developed into a powerful weapon that employees can unite together to fight against employers’ authority, voice their own opinions, maintain legal rights and change unfair situations.
The US labor unions have a long history and play its great important role in the continuous development and change between labor and management (Peterson, 1963). Especially for its major functions, they have played a positive role in performing the collective bargaining, regulating the disputes between labor and management and normalizing the relationship between labor and management. By analyses of current conditions and causes of the labor unions, next I am going to detect the labor unions and relationship between labor and management

Two manifestations of current conditions of US labor unions
The main manifestations of current conditions of US labor unions are for great numbers and low density (Freeman and Hannan, 1987). In the US, there are about 190 relatively large-scale labor organizations, of which they are labor unions and other employees associations. The union’s numbers in the US are so much more than that in other developed countries, such as there are 110 national labor unions in the US and 17 only in Germany. The main causes for such current condition are for the professionalized labor union and the right of free organization.

What features professionalized labor union is for unions’ jurisdiction’s divide, which is mainly based upon professions. Its organization scales are small, but the main objectives for its activities are for pursuit of higher salary level, welfare benefit and better working conditions. However, since an industrial union is divided against industries, its organization scale is much larger with higher level of organization and of seeking wider range of social benefits that are outside of workplace. Considering of that, the professionalized labor organizations are the main causes of the existence of so many US labor unions.

As for the right of free organization, the American law regulates that each type of workmen group has the right to set up its own labor organization. The labor union is by self organized and administered. For this reason, any workmen group who has sensed of interests violation and found nowhere to appeal can by law establish a labor union or other types of labor organizations. Thus workmen’s power can be united together to confront the employers’ authority. But what is worthy of stating is that it will not be always legal if labor unions are freely organized by the workmen. Although the workmen group may freely organize their own labor union, one worker can only select a single labor union to represent for him according to limitation of single representative principle. And the scope of jurisdiction for different labor unions cannot be overlapped. Therefore, when a new labor union established, it must submit application to NLRB, named as National Labor Relations Board. The NLRB will approve its application and as well work out its jurisdiction’s divide. Thus the numbers of US labor unions are actually subject to a limitation to a certain extent.

Speaking of low density of labor union, the numbers of US labor unions are plenty, but the level of member rate is relatively low. In recent years, there has been less than 16% ratio between the union members and the overall labor forces in the US. And the union density of private departments is even lower to 8%. The major reasons come from the American government, the employers and the employees.

Due to strong individual thoughts that excludes collective acts and poor confidence employees poses to unions for failing operation (Kochan, 1979), the union density in the US is relatively much lower than other developed countries. Meanwhile, what is worthy of noting is that such low density also demonstrate a constantly downward trend. Even though the American unions’ members are increasing gradually, the member rates are decreasing year by year as member’s increase does not catch up with that of working population. Various kinds of reasons may lead to such trend. First, the American industrial structures have changed a lot from the past leading manufacturing to the third industry oriented. The declining manufacturing industries which have enjoyed union high member rates have made the overall union density going down. Second, as foreign enterprises from other developing countries are competing so intensely, the unionized enterprises are forced to control the labor costs and constrain the union development. Third, as the governmental regulations are intensifying protection of employees, some of union’s roles and functions are reduced. Lastly, the incompetency of union has made itself less attracting.

Conclusion
Concluded from above, the American unions have played a paramount important role in the operation of labor and management. However it has to be confessed that the unions are now facing serious recession. The declining low density of union members has made its functions reducing. So where does the American union go in the ever-changing relationship between labor and management? All we can do is to wait and see.

The Maltese Falcon

The Maltese Falcon

The Maltese Falcon is one of Dashiell Hammett’s most famous detective stories. The story mainly develops around an invaluable black Falcon statue. It began with the murders of two people: Spade’s partner, Miles Archer, and Brigid’s follower, Thursby. Samuel Spade, who was a detector, was the protagonist of this story, while Brigid was a beautiful woman coming to ask Spade for help. Through Brigid, Spade discovered that there were some people looking for the falcon, including Brigid, Gutman and Cairo. He pretended to help them find out the location of the falcon. During the process, he searched for the person who killed Archer and found out it was Brigid. After discovering the falcon he fetched was fake, he sent Brigid to the police despite the fact that he had fallen in love with her. One of the most successful points of this story is that it tightly catches audience’s emotion through the ups and downs on plots and the unpredictable character of the protagonist. Nico Frijda’s “The Laws of Emotion” plays an important role in helping us understand how the The Maltese Falcon causes audience’s emotional responses.
“The law of habituation means that in life we get used to our circumstances whatever they are. The emotions, therefore, respond most readily to change. This means that we are always comparing what is happening to a relatively steady frame of reference (what we are used to). As a result our emotions tend to respond most readily to changes that are relative to this frame of reference”. This law offers us an easier perspective to perceive how the story arouses audience’s emotional fluctuation. It guides us to focus more on the changes created by the story, which play a crucial part in involving audience’s emotion. Through observation, it can be found that there are several changes guiding the development of the story and the audience’s emotion.
First, Brigid’s identity was disclosed. At the beginning, Brigid pretended to be a lady named Wonderly and fabricated a story to ask Spade for help, and then Miles Archer was murdered and she disappeared. All of these raised questions in readers’ heart and intrigued their curiosity. As story developed, changes occur. Wonderly was not Wonderly, but a name fabricated by Brigid. Focus of the story also surfaced: not on the murder, but on the searching of a falcon. The beginning of the story has already formed a shock for readers and they started to be emotionally attracted by the story and tightly followed the development of the story.
Second, Spade changed his attitude. The unpredictable character of Spade is the highlight of the story. The protagonist appeared to be wise, humorous, charming with the sense of justice at the beginning. However, as the secret of Maltese Falcon was disclosed, Spade seemed to be interested in the searching of the falcon and began to join Gutman in looking for the statue. It seemed like that he has forgotten the death of his partner and was tempted by the considerable wealth and the beauty of Brigid. He even negotiated with Gutman about the amount of money he could get after handing over the falcon. Such change causes readers’ doubt about that whether Spade is a justice detector. The contrast of Spade’s images respectively in readers’ heart and in the story can lead to audience’s emotional response to a great degree.
Third, it was an abrupt turn when the falcon Spade got was found fake. As the story developed, readers might be imagining what the falcon was like and what might happen if Spade handed out the falcon. And the moment when Spade has already handed out the falcon and Gutman was scrapping it, readers might have thought that Spade was as greedy and treacherous as Gutman and Cairo. However, another change happened. The falcon was a fake one! This comparison and twisted plot shocked readers again. Audience’s emotion has once again run high in this unexpected change. Therefore, change of audience’s emotion crucially lies on the change of plot.
Finally, Spade’s attitude towards Brigid led the story into another climax. Through the previous part of the story, audience might have thought that Spade was not as justice as he seemed like, but a greedy man who loved wealth like Gutman and Cairo. However, beyond our expectation, Spade, in the final scene, decided to sent Brigid to police despite the struggle that he has fallen in love with her. He also confessed that he was revenging for Miles Archer. This design of plot and the abrupt change of the protagonist’s character once again amazed the audience. It not only developed out of expectation, but also left space for audience to reconsider the quality of Spade. Audience’s emotion once again was affected by the change of plot.
One law of Nico Frijda’s “The Laws of Emotion” lies in that changes can cause emotional response. When something happens that it is different from what we have imagined, it will lead to our special emotions, including: curious, amazed or shocked. Through this perspective, it is easier for us to understand why and how The Maltese Falcon can guide audience’s emotional response. There are a lot of changes covering the story. “The Laws of Emotion” guides us to attach high attention to these changes and study their effects on affecting audience’s emotion. Through the analysis above, it is obvious that these changes do have an impact on influencing audience’s emotion. Therefore, the usefulness of Nico Frijda’s “The Laws of Emotion” rests on that it offers readers a perspective to focus on the changes of story plots.
