Mieko to defend title in XTERRA Japan

Mieko Carey is heading to Japan in the last week of this month to defend her title in the 2010 XTERRA Japan Championship.

The XTERRA Japan will take place on Aug. 28 in Marunuma, Gunma Prefecture, in the northwest corner of Kanto region on Honshu Island.

Carey had been to the same race last year and topped the women's pro division of the off-road race. The 32-year-old Saipan triathlete was the first female to reach the finish line in the Marunuma race after timing in at three hours and 16 seconds and beating Australian pro Kylee Lock by less than four minutes.

This year, Carey believes it will be tough to defend her title, but she still hopes to finish in the Top 3 of the 1.2-kilometer swim, 25-km mountain bike race, and 10-km run event.

“I know I will have hard time in XTERRA Japan, as there will be a lot of good athletes competing there. But as always, I will do my best and hope to finish the race, make it to the finish line safely and with a smile,” Carey said.

Carey had a relatively smooth cruise in XTERRA Japan last year, as she made it to the finish line in one piece-no bruises, no crashes, and no broken shoes.

In the swim leg, where the Saipan triathlete is known to be a strong contender, Carey timed in at 16:50 and still placed fifth overall despite the frigid water in Marunuma Lake.

In the bike leg, Carey submitted 1:48:00 and placed seventh overall, while she completed the run leg in 54 minutes (sixth overall) to claim the women's division championship.

Carey is heading to Japan weeks after winning two gold medals in the 7th Micronesian Games in Palau.

She won the individual gold medal in the women's division after completing the 750-meter swim, 10-km bike, and 5-km bike race in Palau last Sunday in one hour, 14 minutes, and 37 seconds. She finished swim part in the waters off the Palau Pacific Resort in 10:59, timed in at 39:50 in the bike leg from PPR to KB Bridge and back, and submitted 24:14 in the run race from PPR to Meyuns Seaplane Ramp and back.

Carey was the first overall finisher in the race and with Kieran Daly placing first in the men's division and Matthew Mancao third, the trio gave the CNMI the gold in the team event.

The Micronesian Games gold medalist said the race in Palau was a good warm-up for XTERRA Japan.

“I had this muscle tear before I raced in Palau. But after doing the race, I felt better. The race was not that exhausting, it just gave me time to practice my swim strokes and test my legs for the bike and run legs. It's a good race to warm up for XTERRA Japan,” said Carey.
