In the daily life, people are often faced with some lectures some figures of authority, such as parents, teachers or bosses. For their generation, people’s life is not very smooth, so people’s expectation of the next generation is very high. My parents thus took my education and growth very seriously. Once I found that when I was a teenager, they often red my diary without my permission, and sometimes even think of ways to see text messages on my cell phone. But I wanted those things to be known only by myself. When I accused them of those bad behavior and asked them to stop, they complained that their child was good almost in everything, but not obedient. My father often shook his head and sighed, saying: "I am providing you something to eat, something to wear, but you treat your loved ones like a stranger." My mother will say" We will not do those things for the other people that I do not care about. We do it out of care for you.” Finally, I can only honestly let them read my diary and text messages regularly, as if privacy was violated, living in endless fear of being monitored is not a child. They were acting like victims, and in turn, blamed my indifference.

In my case moral dilemma, authoritarian conscience overcome humanistic conscience, which makes me to be obedient at last, and have bad effect. I have experienced the struggle between authoritarian conscience and humanistic conscience defined by Erich Fromm. To fully understand obedience, it is important to know the concept of conscience. According to Erich Fromm(2013), there is a distinction between them, as authoritarian conscience is the internalized obedience to an outside authority but humanistic conscience refers to one’s own judgment of right and wrong(685). I accused them and expressed my anger driven by humanistic conscience as I knew from my heart that it is wrong to look at others’ diary and phone without permission. But on the other hand, my final agreement and obedience of their request is out of consideration that they are my food and clothes providers, which is a authoritarian conscience. Just as Erich Fromm(2013) wrote, obedience to the "authoritarian conscience," is likely to weaken the power of "humanistic conscience”(685). I found that it worked well on me. I When the elders tried to impose their own ideas on me, they always used how hard they are to feed me and the family as a reason to set up their authority to ask me to respect their views, which is in fact a sort of obedience, and in their eyes, disobedience is a performance of not respecting them. However, only the act of disobedience is in line with the laws of human evolve(Fromm, 684). If the younger is to follow the views of their elders total and their ideas were suppressed, the end result is the stagnation or even backward of the development of human civilization.

In addition, my final obedience is also misled by some very mistaken opinions held by my parents. During the argument between my parents and me, there are different opinions formed, which influences my final decision between “authoritarian conscience” and “humanistic conscience”. Also, There are some errors of opinion made by my parents. My mother will be anxious and say the classic phrase:" We will not do those things for the other people that I do not care about. We do it out of care for you.” According to Vincent Ryan Ruggiero, there are four kinds of persons who tend to make mistakes, one of which is those who allow passion instead of reason control them(3). Thus, my mother can not think in a very logical way, making her influenced more by reasoning that supports her prejudices. And unfortunately, a lot of people believe that"I have as much right to my opinion as you to yours"(Ruggiero, 3). For elders and younger generation, there exists more or less a generation gap, and different opinions. But some elders let us obey them, and do not consider our ideas.

To sum up, in the face of a moral dilemma, although it is hard to give up “humanistic conscience” and, I make a choice to be obedient to the authority by accepting my parents’ mistaken opinions, and stop following my own opinions.

At the funeral of a friend, he was reminded of the death of his son and the gap between Molly's thoughts and sex. As a Jew, Bloom met with all kinds of discrimination in the community, and always feel that he is an outsider. To cover up his Jewish identity, Bloom repeatedly changed his name and religious beliefs. hoping to integrate with the mainstream society. Through the journey of the hero Bloom’s activities in Dublin for a day and Odysseus’s drifting 10 years, they both convey a truth value of their time: they are outsiders in their society and seeking a place to accept them.
