下面为大家整理一篇优秀的essay代写范文-To decide war: the road to peace in Roman civilization。
(Aen.11.113-115)

To decide war: the road to peace in Roman civilization

To investigate how ancient Roman society lived with the war, in a macro scope, this paper exams question “can peace ever come from war, and are people ever ready to be free of conflict for power” with reference to book I& II of Livy's History of Rome and book II, VII, XI of the Aeneid, and in a micro scope, discusses question “can peace of mind be preserved under pressures of life and death” with reference to book II, VII, XI of the Aeneid and Catullus. According to I& II of Livy's History of Rome and the Aeneid, Livy and Vigil agree that it is not necessarily that people live with power struggles. About achievability of inner peace of people in dreadful threat, it is revealed in the Aeneid and Catullus.
In Rome’s very first stories, the Trojans fight for peace but not for war itself. These homeless, who roams around, is stuck in a meaningless war that they don’t want to fight. “‘Peace with the manes of great Pallas dwell!’ Aeneas said no more, but, inly thro’ he mourned.” (Aen 11.94-98) He tries not to stir trouble, as he explains “in causeless quarrels has involved your state…who sought your friendship ere the war began!” (Aen. 11.113-115)
Even from the counterpart, people argue against the meaning of the war. “Maids, matrons, widows, mix their common moans; Orphans their sires, and sires lament their sons. All in that universal sorrow share, and curse the cause of this unhappy war.” (Aen. 11.208-211) They also seek to cease fighting. “If wished success our labor shall attend, think peace concluded, and the king your friend… And seek alliance in some other land”.(Aen 11.123-126)At the end, both side “have felt enough to wish the peace: a land exhausted to the last remains, depopulated towns, and driven plains.” (Aen. 11.358-360)
However, in another version of story it is said that the Trojans finally settle due to the hospitality of Latinus who “was so struck with the noble bearing of the men and their leader that he gave his right hand as a solemn pledge of friendship for the future.” (Livy 1.1)
As Rome emerged and expanded, war was fueled inside the state as the Sabine women were raped, but later the end of this conflict “was not only peace that was mad, the two nations were united into one State.” (Livy 1.13) Consequently, Livy justifies the war, saying “it was, in fact, through the strength given by him that the City was powerful enough to enjoy an assured peace for forty years after his departure.” (Livy 1.17)
The maintenance of a great country needs both iron wrist and soft hand. Therefore in Rome there are certain people “universally admitted to be first in the conduct of war and the arts of peace.” (Livy 2.16) With “foreigners”, the Latin, later Rome turned a new page, “at no previous period had the Latin nation been friendlier with the Roman government.” (Livy 2.22) In an emergency circumstance, Roman senates feel “the mobs were in great danger of their lives”, deciding “Open violence would have been resorted to,” by which decrease the domestic hostility. (Livy 2.23) Exercising this new term, the senate arrests Appius, partly from his innate love of tyranny, giving the harshest sentences.” (Livy 2.27) In general, it can be seen that the purpose of war is to maintain Rome itself rather than purely war-seeking behavior.
Regarding the mental state of the Romans, during the whole journey under pressures of life and death, Aeneas in the Aeneid remains sometimes delighted for natural joy: “To tuneful songs their narrow throats applied. The captain gives command; the joyful train.”(Aen 7.33-35)And when the Trojan land and find the prophesy come true. “Then every brow with cheerful green is crowned. The feasts are doubled, and the bowls go round.” (Aen 7.144-147) From a micro scope, Catullus depicts pictures of Roman citizens’ lives.
During the period of Ceasar, though tension of war still takes place, a tendency of pursuing spiritual aesthetic development emerged in its literature. Rather than traditional poet extolling military forces, he writes to express love for his family. Expressing the excitement of returning home, he sets down: “We rest in the bed we longed for? This one moment worth’s all the labor.” (Catullus 31.10) Remembering his childhood, he recalls “At that time when the first white toga was handed me, when my youth passed in flower through happy spring, I played more than enough.” (Cat 68b.15-18)
He also wrote for his lovers and friends. To his friend Veranius, he writes “Veranius, first to me of all…You.re back. O happy news for me!” (Catullus 9.1-5) Concerning his beloved companion, he asks his friend “if you.ve ever had a desire in your mind you’ve pursued chastely and purely, keep this boy of mine modestly safe.” (Catullus 15.3-5) He illustrates the days with his love’s companion as “It’s on you and no other I seek to lavish riches: besides I’d offer whatever riches I had.” (Cat 68b.159-160)
The most peaceful and innovative ideas embedded are his love for life. He writes for the passion of pure love—“their mutual spirits love and are loved. Septimius sets his little Acme, above the Syrians or Britons”—which shows a clear idea of choosing lover over the honor from warfare.(Cat 45.20-22) He respects a simple life of people. “Cease to beg for hundred sestertia, you always ask for: sufficiency is riches.” (Cat 23.15)
Citizens are the fabric of a society. From time sequence and extract of certain poet, this paper probe into Roman citizens’ view of war and their life, which proves that, in general, Rome civilization develops as it fight against others but the reason why it is long lasting as a nation is its human spirit and cultural treasure.

This is what i believe

2020-05-28 18:34:05 | 日記
下面为大家整理一篇优秀的essay代写范文-This is what i believe。

This is what i believe

Everyone should have its own value. Value will be helpful for us to deal with problems, to communicate with others and even guide us to a better future. What about my value? It is Perseverance, responsible and to be tolerant.
No matter at study or at work, we may face a lot of difficulties and even think about giving up. At this moment, your value will save you or kill you. If you always tell yourself ”never give up””I can”, you will beat difficulties and finally overcome problems. On the contrary, if you are not confident, you always doubt your ability and feel negative, you may give up when you face problems and you cannot taste the happiness of success.
Which factor do you think is most crucial for us to be successful in our career? Talent? Diligence? Or social network? Responsibility? From my point of view, to be responsible is the premise for us to be outstanding in our job. Undoubtedly, talent is helpful for us to adapt to a new job and perform well. However, without responsibility, everything will turn to zero. You can win trust from others because of responsibility and you can gain more opportunities.
How to create and maintain a social network is a crucial lesson we should learn. From my point of view, one key factor is to be tolerant. Everyone will make mistakes and some mistakes will disturb you and make you angry. For example, someone is late for a dating, someone may tell a lie to you, someone break a promise ,etc. All this behavior may make you angry or even let you down. At this situation, instead of being angry, it is better to ask reasons first because there may be hardship behind errors. After better communication, more than half errors can be forgave. What about the other half situation? If you keep angry on your friend and do not forgive him or her,you may lose this friend. On the contrary, if you provide them one more opportunity and be tolerant to his or her mistake, the result will be greatly different. You will not only resolve the conflict between you two, but also gain appreciation from your friend. Furthermore, thanks to your tolerance, the friendship between you two will be strengthened and your social network can be consolidated.

The first experience is about my internship in a company. I worked as a sales intern in a logistics company last year when I was a junior and my major job was to make orders for clients ,to calculate weekly sales volume ,to cooperate will field sales and prepare contract for them . In a early morning of one weekend, I did not wake up at that moment. The boss in finance department ,Mary, called me up and asked me to finish a so-called crucial job.It is to submit some forms and documents to finance department in the province and pay some fees. She emphasized that it was a very important job and I should finish it just like I finish my job. She also said that she gave this job to me because she trusted me so much and she did not hope that I will let her down. Facing her request, I felt like I was just staying at a dilemma. I knew it was hard to reject her. However, I did not want to take in this job for several reasons. First, As she was not my boss, I did not think I was responsible to finish a task for her. Second, that day was weekend ,it is a day-off, it is the day I need to take a rest,to meet friends and I did not think I need to take this duty. Third, I only worked for that company for several weeks, I did not try any job about finance department so I did not think I should take such a crucial task. Therefore, I rejected the request from Mary, said sorry to her and asked her to ask someone else to do this work. I think I was brave at that moment because I rejected the request from Mary, a boss in finance department of our company. What pushed me to do so at that moment? I think it is my understanding about my job and Mary, my principle about my work.I clearly knew that my work did not include this task and it was not necessary for me to do this job. Furthermore, I believed that Mary would forgive my rejection. I think the ideal scenario should be: Mary understood my hardship ,forgave my rejection and asked others to do this job for her. However, Mary did not behave like what I imagine. In the next week, She complained about this matter to my boss and my boss was a little angry and disappointed about my performance. From his view, colleagues should help each other when one is in need and as an intern, I should obey the order from him and other bosses in other department. He asked me to explain the reasons for him. Thanks to the opportunity ,I told what I thought to my boss, though my boss was not satisfied with my performance, my boss forgave me and even agreed with my choice finally.
The second experience is about my team project with my classmates. When I was a freshman, I took part in a team project aimed in deciding an outstanding marketing plan book with several classmates. At the very beginning, we came up with a creative idea about the planning about marketing program after brainstorm and we tried our best to make it come true. However, in the proceed of finishing it and improving it ,we faced a big challenge and did not know how to solve this problem. We did several brainstorms after discovering the problem, asked many tutors and friends for help, read many books related to this topic and so on. But no matter how much we wanted to overcome this difficulties,we did not come up with any solutions. Several days later, Many other teammates was disappointed about it, wanted to give up this idea and looked for another way. Exactly at that moment, I came up with a little crazy idea to solve this problem. I was not sure whether it was useful, but once it could come true, we can continue our creative idea and even make it come true. However, many teammates were passive to this idea and wanted to give up this idea. For me, though I came up with a solution, I was not confident enough that this solution would be workable and I did not want to be responsible for my fault if this solution was wrong. Furthermore, as one teammate came up with another idea, though it was not that creative,it was also a good idea for us to continue our proposal. From my point of view, it was better to take his idea because we would minimize the risk and our proceed will be taken more smoothly. Finally, I did not speak up for my solution and worked for the later idea. Several weeks later, the result came out. We were not champion of this contest. Why the champion won this contest? Because they not only took the creative idea we thought about, they also overcame the biggest challenge successfully. What is more, they exactly used my method and the result showed that it is workable, creative and outstanding! It is too late to regret. I know the result cannot be changed. But just imagine ,if I insisted on my own opinion and used my knowledge to pursue them to adopt my view, I am confident that my insistence will be useful and they will follow my view to finish our proposal. Then our proposal will be continue smoothly and the result will be very different. The champion cup will belong to us and we can make the creative idea come true.I really learned a crucial lesson from this experience. To speak up one’s own opinion is a good start for us to achieve our goal. Do not let off any hope even it is tiny and your life will gradually be changed totally.
I felt surprise when I put the values and beliefs that I shown in Part 1 and my behavior in Part 2! The two situation in Part 2 cannot support the values and beliefs in Part 1 and it is even opposite. why? From my point of view, there are some reasons. First, I do not understand myself as what I thought. I am always proud of myself that I understand what I like, what I hate, what’s my dream, what’s my value and beliefs and so on. However, when I think deeply, I found that I did not know myself thoroughly. I remembered once I went shopping with my mother, I would like to buy a shirt that are in yellow, I thought I liked it so much and I would wear it often. However, my mother said that it was not my style and persuaded me not to buy this shirt. As I thought I knew myself well, I did not followed my mother’s suggestions and finally bought this shirt. However, when I arrived at home, I thought the color was exaggerated, the style was too sexy for me and I did not want to wear it anymore. It seems that others may know much better about me. Second, I actually cannot understand what is my values and beliefs. When I think about my values, I did not have a strong idea. I thought about it for about half an hour and finally wrote something I agreed to in Part 1 without any deep thinking. From my point of view, the reason why I cannot understand my own values and beliefs is that one’s values and beliefs lies in the deepest layer of own mind and we even cannot realize it. Third, it is possible that the experience I shown in Part 2 is not representative. Without a representative experience, it is hard to tell whether the content in Part 1 match that in Part 2.Fourth,if my values and beliefs changes, my values and beliefs in the past will be different from that in nowadays, the values and beliefs shown in Part 2 cannot represent the values and beliefs in nowadays. This phenomenon can explain why the two situation in Part 2 cannot support the values and beliefs in Part 1.Finally, from my point of view, one can own some values. In other words, the values and beliefs in Part 1 cannot shown all my values. Without the list of all values and beliefs, it is not enough to make a conclusion that the values and beliefs shown in Part 1 do not match my behavior in Part 2.
That is the reasons I found to explain this phenomenon. From my point of view, it is very interesting to do this analysis because it is a good way for me to know better about myself.

Militant Rome and Roman people

2020-05-28 18:32:09 | 日記
下面为大家整理一篇优秀的essay代写范文-Militant Rome and Roman people。

Militant Rome and Roman people

Hoping to reveal the conflicting side of ancient Rome from an innate perspective, in this paper I will exam question “can peace ever come from war, and are people ever ready to be free of conflict for power” with reference to Livy's History of Rome and the Aeneid, and question “can stability in achievements and in human relationships be achieved” with reference to the Aeneid and Catullus. In book II, VII, XI of the Aeneid and Livy's book I& II, it suggests that war took over peace in ancient Rome, and then this mal-balance also shows in instability of human relationship and achievement, which is revealed in Catullus and the Aeneid’s book II, VII, XI.
Following the Rome’s origin is a cruel history replete with battles since the day when Rome civilization starts with the massacre of Trojans. As Catullus writes, “the third heir of deceitful Pelops lays waste the walls of Troy, besieged in the weary war.” (Cat 64.345) After long journey, in Laurentian territory, as “Trojans disembarked, they began to plunder the neighborhood, he Aborigines.” (Livy, 1.1) Later, between the legendary twins of Rome, “heated passions led to bloodshed; in the tumult Remus was killed.” (Livy, 1.7)
Later at the early stage of the State’s establishment, when the Veientes keeps intrusion for booty, “the Romans defeat them and devastated their fields more out of revenge than for the sake of plunder”, demonstrating Rome’s hardness. (Livy 1.15) Reflecting on the ruling of Romulus and Numa, Livy acknowledges the necessity of wars, writing: “Thus by two successive kings the greatness of the State was advanced; by each in a different way, by the one through war, by the other through peace.”(Livy 1.21)
While Rome grows bigger, to “put an end to these irregular and scattered excursions on the part of the Etruscans”, they still hold an inhumane way to deal with weaker disturber with an iron wrist. (Livy 2.11) The way Auruncans is treated is an extreme example. It “were treated with no less rigor…the principal men were beheaded, the rest of the townsfolk sold as slaves.”(Livy 2.17)
Surprisingly, as for it people however, some unwelcome Rome citizens are faced with assassinations, which could make the threatened at least “unnerved” or even make desirable proposals. Mucius, who proposes “for the restoration of the Tarquins, more because he could not well refuse their request than because he had any hope of its being granted.” (Livy 2.13)
Besides, in Vigil’s poem, it is manifesting that at that age, there existed prevail hatred among countries. In the Aeneid, Vigil employs Juno the Queen to represent anthropic evil. “O fates of Troy, which Juno’s fates oppose! Could they not fall unpitied on the plain?” (Aen 7.296-297) She even appealed to the war-thirsty Fury for assistance, who later delighted by “the discord is complete, nor you command the peace”. (Aen 7.522-526) Therefore, war remains a component in Romans’ lives.
Moreover, ancient people can be described as fiery-spirited. For instance, when Turnus’s antagonism is enflamed, his “peace polluted…to force the foes from the Lavinian shore”. (Aen 7.464-468) Even the crowed are aroused—“Increase the clamor, and the war demand”. (Aen 7.586-589)
As ancient Roman people are generally inflammable and warlike, connections between people are weak and filled with suspicion. Wise Laocoon persuades his people not to bring in the Greek’s horse by crying “Trust not their presents, nor admit the horse.” (Aen 2.47-48) However, sometimes the public, out of their mind, tends to be “against all omens of their ill success”, unwilling to take any advice. (Aen 7.586-589) Therefore, as someone who knows what is following, Vigil comments “A thousand ships, nor ten years’ siege, had done. False tears and fawning words the city won.” (Aen 2.196-198)
In the form of myth, Catullus describes an indifferent family, “the brother’s hand was stained with a brother’s blood…not afraid of desecrating the household shrine.” (Cat 64.399)
Even lovers in his encounters betray. A prince abandoned “her father in preferring the sweet love of Theseus,” however one day she finds herself “abandoned wretchedly to empty sands. But uncaring the hero… casting his vain promises to the stormy winds.” Therefore she decided revenge “as Theseus left me alone…pursue him and his with murder.” (Cat 64)
The Romans not only despite their foe, and even despite their hero—Caesar regardless his achievement, which in some degree proves that there is no such thing as stable achievement. Another poet, Catullus, also proves the distrust and changeable bond between people. Catullus, though with his father as the friend of Ceasar, he per se holds an Ambiguous towards this leader and his achievement. In his work, he mocks Ceasar’s relationship with his companion. He implies: “you’re shameless…it wasn’t for this, you, the unique leader”. (Cat 29) Moreover, Catullus offenses “beautifully matched the perverse buggers, Mamurra the catamite and Caesar.” (Cat 57) Or he takes indifferent view, “I’ve no great inclination to want to please you, Caesar, or to know which of the two you are, black or white.” (Cat 93) However, curiously, his attitude towards Ceasar’s accomplishment is not sustaining. In a poem, he writes in between the lines that “viewing great Caesars monuments”. (Cat 11)
In ancient Rome, war is not necessary followed by peace, even the intension is to defend itself. The rising of Rome civilization brings not only prosperity but also a conflicting nature for its people which add to uncertainty to maintain this militaristic giant.

The role of factory farming

The role of factory farming

Small family farming and factory farming consist of two main types of farming. Robert R. Farrell defines factory farming as“a factory farm produces huge volumes of food by industrial type operations. These food factories typically cover as many as several thousand acres. If it has livestock, it generally has several thousand animals confined in the same area”. Factory farming is a kind of intensive operation emerging later in response to larger required economic profits. However, though factory farming brings farmers with higher productivity and customers with lower price, it arouses a heated debate given by the problems it has caused, such as pollution and animal abuse. Actually, factory farming has turned out to be an irresistible trend in agribusiness due to the fact that more food and profits are needed along with the overall increasing population and the rapidly developing economy, even though its drawbacks are clear. What needs attention is to ponder how to control the adverse outcomes that factory farming causes.
Benefits brought by factory farming cover lots of people, including farmers, customers and employees. For farmers, intensive operation can maximize the value of land and resources because, compared with small family farming, there are far more animals having been put on a land with same size. It can also reduce the waste of fodder because fodder has been spread concentratedly in an area rather than many areas. Therefore, cost of land and fodder can be reduced when applying factory farming. Moreover, larger amount of animals on a land with same size means a higher productivity and efficiency. Though using lands with same size, factory farming provides larger output of animals compared with small family farming. Therefore, factory farming not only reduces cost, but also improves output, which directly and significantly increase farmers’ profits. Supporters also reveal other affecting factors. “Because of the use of technology in factory farming and also the application of chemical products, food is produced at lower costs as compared to smaller farms” and “for producers, this will mean better profits”. In terms of increasing the producers’ benefits, factory farming is irreplaceable, attributed to the features of its operation. Smaller farming objectively can never reach such a high economic profit.
Customer is also a beneficiary of factory farming. It can be analyzed from two perspectives: lower price and more supply. As what have been mentioned above, factory farming has brought producers lower cost, therefore, it correspondently reduces the price of food for customers. As supporters say, “consumers can also delight in lower priced products”. Moreover, given by its high efficiency and productivity, factory farming can satisfy the increasing need for food caused by the rising population and improving living standard. As statistics show, “ So much so that in the U.S. only 3% of farms now generate an astonishing 62% of that nation’s agricultural output! In fact, they have so consolidated the agricultural sector that only five food retailers (Kroger, Albertson’s, Wal-Mart, Safeway and Ahold USA) account for a whopping 42% of all retail food sales in the U.S. And because they are able to produce food cheaper, factory farms are forcing several smaller farms out of business (according to Natural Agricultural Statistics Service, 330 farmers leave their land every week)”. Therefore, since its scale is so small that if there only exits small farming, it is rather difficult for it to support the need of the population of a nation. Thus, due to the limited amount of food, consumers have to afford a relatively higher price. Choosing factory farming or small farming has a grave impact on a nation. On a longer and profounder view, factory farming is better in line with a nation’s interest.
Factory farming also benefits people who do not have jobs. In small farming, the amount of animals that producers need to take care of is far less than that of factory farming, thus employees required to operate the farm is also far fewer than that of factory farming. Moreover, factory farming is of more complexity compared with small farming for that it involves more complicated breeding methods and technology. Therefore, more employees are needed in factory farming and more job opportunities can be provided. Supporters also point out this advantage of factory farming. “The setting up of a factory farm requires lots of labor. This means that people will be required for carrying out the numerous daily tasks in the farm. Local people can benefit from such a farm as they will get employed. Furthermore, the salary that they receive from the factory farm can be used for enhancing their economy”.
It is obvious that the advantages mentioned above such as higher efficiency and profits, lower price and higher supply, and more job opportunities, can never be attained by small farming or other farming methods. In the long run, factory farming should be employed for a nation’s interest. However, drawbacks of factory farming have also been pointed out and discussed repeatedly. As far as I am concerned, though factory farming has lots of disadvantages, its position with more superiority to other farmings is unshakable.
One of the disadvantages of factory farming is that it leads to a dirtier environment compared with small farming. Based on the fact that animals are collectively fostered in one area, it is easier for their waste to pollute the environment and spread bacteria. Moreover, if a chicken develops a disease, it is very possible that other chickens around it also develop disease given that they live too closely. Therefore, the health situation of animals cannot be guaranteed. Robert R. Farrell also reveals other problems of factory farming, “Raising large numbers of animals in cramped conditions leads to disease. Therefore, the animals are fed antibiotics in order to ward off diseases. Also, animals are injected with hormones to speed their growth and some are even given feed containing animal byproducts. This has led to humans acquiring antibiotic resistant bacteria, and diseases such as mad cow disease”. In this sense, it should be admitted that factory farming does affect the environment and the safety of the food. However, it should not be forgotten that all these factors mentioned above, such as environment and injection, are changeable and controllable once we pay attention to them.
Another drawback of factory farming that is widely discussed is the cruelty to animals. Critics of factory farming say, “the animals are not seen as individual, sentient beings with unique physical and psychological needs but as eggs, milk, meat, leather etc” and “since the animals are seen as mere commodities, they are bred, fed, confined, and drugged to lay more eggs, birth more offspring, and die with more meat on their bones”. Behaviors of abusing animals in factory farming have been listed out. For example, “farmers get more money for chickens with enlarged thighs and breasts. As a result, they breed the animals to be so heavy that their bones cannot support their weight. Consequently, the chickens have difficulty standing, and their legs often break”. Moreover, “dairy cows live in crowded pens or barns with concrete floors. Milking machines often cut them and cause other injuries. Some give them electrical shocks which cause extreme pain and even death. Dairy cows are forced to produce 10 times more milk than they would produce in nature”. Therefore, animal abuse turns out to be the reason why some people attack factory farming.
Drawbacks mentioned above including dirty environment, unsafety of food and animal cruelty actually are loopholes of factory farming. They should be honestly admitted. However, considering that no other farming method can create those same benefits for a nation as factory farming and those loopholes can be filled, factory farming is still favored. However, what needs to be mentioned is that strict policies must be implemented by relevant departments to regulate the operation of factory farming. First, environment of factory farming should be checked periodically. Second, injection of antibiotics, hormones or other drugs must be strictly controlled or even banned. Safety of food must be examined carefully before they are sold. Third, animal cruelty must be prohibited and punished once it happens. Therefore, core issue lays on how to regulate the operation of factory farming rather than banning its existence.
Advantages of factory farming including higher efficiency and profits, lower price and higher supply, and more job opportunities, are irreplaceable. It decides the fact that though factory farming has numerous drawbacks, support should be given to it considering the need of a nation and its people. As for the problems caused by factory farming, they should be addressed at the same moment when favoring factory farming. Only endeavor to strike a balance between its advantage and disadvantage, can factory farming exert its most powerful influence and contribute itself to our society.

Studying Abroad Is Worthwhile

Studying abroad is now an increasingly global phenomenon. For some better-off families, the most admirable education starts as early as elementary school. Or students from less wealthy family can land them a place at college abroad coming with scholarship later in life. No matter at which stage of life, overseas study is a once-in-a-life-time opportunity for people to broaden their horizons, open their minds and grow into a more internationalized talent that echoes with the call of the society.

Studying abroad, on a broad sense, promotes a wide range of cultures to flourish on campus. By encouraging of doing so, it also serves well to local students who can experience a mix of cultures without going abroad. It is right next to them. Individually, studying abroad, to a great extent, is life-transforming and far-reaching. Its benefits are self-evident: language skills, survival skills, better understanding of different cultures and the list can go on and on. The influence of acquiring an overseas learning experience on a person’s life time is so overwhelming and profound that it is worthwhile investing such a large amount of money and time.

Studying abroad, first and foremost, is immensely helpful to acquiring a second language. No doubt when a person is new to a place, one major obstacle is language. Yet fortunately, nowadays before a student is admitted into a foreign school, he/she is required to obtain some language certification to ensure the student can conduct basic communications in a foreign country. As for Chinese students, the United States, the United Kingdom and other English-speaking countries such as Australia and New Zealand are often the most sought-after destinations for overseas study. So speaking English is necessary for them to study abroad. The reality is English is promoted from primary school through college in China but most of the time, Chinese students speak broken English which hinders their daily communication with native speakers. While studying in an English-speaking country, students are immersed in an all-time English environment. It is only a matter of time before they are proficient in English since they simply cannot get away from using it. “Continued language usage was greatest among respondents who lived in a homestay, with 42 percent saying they now use a language other than English on a regular basis” (Dwyer and Peters 1). Sooner or later, they have no difficulty in daily communication, in attending colleges whose teaching medium is English and using English academically. Compared with students learning English for the sake of passing examinations in Chinese education system, those who study in an English-speaking country acquire English without too much pain. Since they use English all the time, there is little possibility that the second language would become rusty once stop using it. On the whole, mastering a second language is a useful social skill and an edge over those who are not good enough.

Studying abroad can expose students to different cultures across the global. This case is especially true in the United States. As a cultural pot, America colleges welcome students coming from the four corners of the world. “In their goals and mission statements, most colleges and universities include some version of ‘knowledge of other cultures’ as a component of a liberal education” (Hopkins 36). Take a walk across any American colleges, you can find students of different colors and races everywhere and from time to time, you can see them sitting on the grass, chatting lively. That’s exactly part of American campus culture and that’s why American colleges appeals so much to overseas students. The world is integrated and this generation needs to be tolerant to people different than you in order to blend in. There is nowhere better than a culturally diverse college for a student to experience first hand what other cultures are like and how they different than his/hers. If he/she encounters cultural shocks, how can he/she deal with them? For a student who receives his/her primary and secondary education in China, he/she is used to be a listener in class and work on his/her own after class. If put in an American college, he/she needs to adapt to the new environment as soon as possible, where teamwork and active class participation is a must in most cases. In such circumstances, the student needs to learn how to contribute to a team project and how to be prepared for classes because he/she cannot simply just sit in the class with the teacher dominating the class it is not like that in a western class. Students need to be heard. To illustrate this point, how people from different cultures behave may also come into the picture. Chinese students are usually shy and not good at interpersonal skills. It is often the case that Chinese students are not comfortable with western cultures since they are way too open for them. Yet if they shy away from making friends from western cultures, they will end up living in their own world. So they need to be more open-minded. The exposure to various cultures and even though most of the time, in conflict with the different ones, students can gradually learn to react and be tolerant to different cultures in the world. And he/she will be better prepared for a more internationalized workplace.

Studying abroad can make a student to become more independent. Studying abroad is a big move for many youngsters as it is the first time that they have lived away from their parents in a remote distance. Generally speaking, Chinese kids are often spoiled in their family. Everything is taken care for them. Their sole task is academic performance. Everything else is secondary. While studying abroad it is not just studying literally. What the package contains is that students need to live on their own without family members taking care of them. For example, students need to find a place to live. If living on campus, they need to apply. If living off campus, they need to rent. Besides, they need to learn how to cook as no one is preparing meals for them anymore. Laundry, household’s chores and bill settlement are all of a sudden thrust on the tender shoulders of the students. They cannot just wait and hope that someone will fix these problems for them. It is not realistic for your parents to travel thousands of miles across continents just to make the bed for you. Living alone means you are responsible for everything that comes along your way. But by learning to be independent, you will not have a hard time abroad. Soon you will become good at multitasking, problem-solving and much stronger to brave the elements. Learning to count on yourself is a natural phrase of life. Studying abroad is a great opportunity for students to sail away from the harbor of safety and weather the storms by themselves at an early age.

Studying abroad is a plus when hunting for jobs. When is all said and done, the reason for parents to save every penny they have to send their children abroad to receive better education is to give them a head start over their peers. Marcum suggested, “in a world where our interest in global issues only continues to grow, we must view study abroad from a far broader perspective.” (B7). With rapid globalization, there are more and more multinational companies here and there. During their expansion, there is an urgent need for internationalized talents who can speak at least two languages, who are open-minded, competitive and having a team spirit. The qualifications that these international companies ask for basically boil down to the core values of western education. Therefore, studying abroad is a long-term investment for a student. When graduating from a foreign college, he/she will feel more confident to step into the society and compete with other job applicants. The advantage is more evident when these overseas students come back to their motherland to find a job. It is especially true in China. China is now the second largest economy in the world and a large number of domestic companies are eager to go global. Hence, this kind of companies seriously needs a lot of overseas talents to help them expand the foreign market. Chinese overseas students would be a perfect match for them. Equipped with language skills of proficient Chinese and English, a mixture of eastern and western cultures, they are qualified to fill the positions. “Consequently, college students today need an education that provides them with skills—such as communication skills—that will allow them to compete in a global market with an increasingly educated population” (Williams 3).

Every coin has two sides. Despite the fact that studying abroad have many benefits, we cannot deny that it results in some negativity. Brain drain is the case in point. Nowadays, it is often the case that talents from developing countries go to developed countries to further their study. It is natural for them to pursue academic advancement. And in some cases, some talents are subsidized by the government. After they finish their study in an industrialized country, it is not unusual for them to choose to stay in that country rather than returning to their motherland. The reasons for that are many. Perhaps they don not want to go back to the old pattern of life; perhaps the job opportunities are much more than at home where they have no place to put what they learn in practice; perhaps they are better paid and can make a better living abroad than at home. No matter what is the reason, the hard fact is that those talents are gone. They cannot take part in making their homeland a better place. This is sad, but nobody to blame.

Another downside to studying abroad is that in the fashion of following suit, parents push their kids to study abroad without considering their abilities or picking and choosing a good school for their children. Like everywhere in the world, there are both excellent and lousy schools in the western world. Without careful comparison of schools, children can end up in some school where academy is no guaranteed. Furthermore, for some young kids living on their own without parental supervision, they are prone to run wild and go stray. For some students who are always on the close watch of their parents, once they are given total freedom, they can go party all night and no study at all. And unfortunately, there are losses of life when students studying abroad. Some tragedies take place in the middle of the night when the overseas students stay out late and got shot for some reason. This is the worst thing that can happen to overseas students. Therefore, before students are ready to embark the exciting and unknown journey of overseas study, they need to learn to be self-disciplined and learn self-protection.

Considering the advantages and disadvantages, we can safely come to the conclusion that studying abroad is a wise decision to make and will be beneficial for a life-time development. Studying and living abroad creates a desirable environment for an overseas student to get totally immersed in a foreign language environment. By actively using the foreign language every day, soon the forewing language will come natural to the users. A master of two languages is a great bonus in today’s society and highly valued by the potential employers. Besides, studying abroad means stepping out of your comfort zone and embrace entirely new and different cultures. This is a great challenge for new arrivals and it usually takes some time for them to get used to. But as long as they learn to be open-minded, they can appreciate the differences of the world and be more tolerant. Furthermore, studying abroad is conducive to personal growth. No longer under the wings of parents, children are forced to face up to the outside world and take care of themselves. They are responsible for what they do and the majority of the time, they are the one that they can count on. But all the efforts to study abroad will pay off eventually.
