As an international student from China, I would like to explore how Chinese immigrants in America assimilate into American culture and also how their life habits and customs differs from that of the Americans. Nowadays Chinese economic situations are becoming better and better and Chinese life is growing richer and richer. Many Chinese choose to immigrate to the United States for better life and education qualities. Also, the United States, as a big immigration country, encourages people from other countries to immigrate to the country. However, the two countries China and America are pretty different on many aspects, such as languages, cultures, politics, ideologies, etc. Therefore, when Chinese people immigrate to America, they might meet a large shock, and I would have large interest in how good preparation they made for the coming life in America. The finding s in this study could help determine whether Chinese immigrants are adapting well to the United States in different culture and whether some suggestions for Chinese immigrants could be given to help them faster adapt to the United States. I would hypothesize that Chinese immigrants would have a harder time in America at first and they would meet cultural shock for quite a long time in America as well. To tell a truth, I, as a Chinese studying here for a long time, still feel unadaptable to the life in the United States, so I believe many Chinese immigrants would also face the same situation as me. My research questions that will guide my study are: how do they deal with the problem of language, that is, how do they communicate with Americans if they cannot speak English? How do they adjust themselves to adapt to the United States quickly? What will they do to deal with the cultural and habitual conflicts in America? How do they think of the United States? What do they think the problems should be paid attention to in America?
During my interview, I plan to interview some Chinese immigrants and ask them why they chose to immigrate here and that the differences between China and America. I want to find out their plans in the future whether they will living in America forever. and that of the reasons. Sometimes I forget that it took a lot of strong, powerful people to give me the equality that I take for granted today.

Although studies indicate that attitudes in Japan are changing towards gender equality, there is still a cultural infrastructure based on feminine and masculine domestic roles. Since 2008 there has been a more vocal move towards greater gender equality. This was due to record low birth rates, and record high suicide rates. Studies indicated that these trends were in great part due to those members of society that were of lower status, and considered themselves to be more dispensable, most notably: women. Poverty had been increasing in Japan since the 1980s. Japan also found itself to be on an economic precipice; global studies indicated that the utilization of women in society as a whole was their most guaranteed path towards greater stability and economic growth (4). This initiated a government-based push towards gender equality. Although more women are working, the cultural backing for the movement has yet to come into fruition.

Japan has an income ratio of 0.44 and a rank of 45 out 65 possible values. The mean value is 0.5 indicating that Japan is below the global average.
Gender Equality Index: (2)
The Gender Equality Index (GEI) is a measure of the equality of women in a country based on relative education, economic participation, and empowerment. A GEI of 100 would indicate true equality, as of yet, no country carries an index of 100.
Of the 157 countries measured. Japan is ranked at 93 with a GEI of 59.
The mean value GEI of all 157 countries is 61, indicating that Japan has a GEI below the global average.

Overall, I believe the statistics support the claim that Japan does not have gender equality. When compared with other countries, Japan has an unacceptable inequality between the genders, especially considering other countries of similar economic and political stature.
Although statistics have thus far built my soapbox, my own personal experience and observations are why I chose to write on this topic. Women are not equal to men in Japan, and are not afforded the opportunity to act as an equal.

From my experience I have found that Japanese women are just as much the perpetrators of sexism as men. At my schools there are gender roles to the services done in day-to-day life. Lunch and tea are served by the women. This is true with no exceptions at any of my schools. Although there are female principals, the highest career rank in the school, they are still expected to serve their male subordinates.  At one of my schools all the teachers go into the cafeteria for lunch, the female teachers serve the lunches and assist the students, the male teachers only watch. I am exempted from these gender roles, because I am a foreigner. This seems odd to me, as it implies that they know what they are doing is wrong, but they have no desire to change.

Drinking is a delicate system of hierarchies and gender roles in Japan. The person of the highest rank is prioritized, their cup should never be empty. The elderly are prioritized over the young, bosses over subordinates, and men over women (9). Women are expected to serve men and each other. As much as I hate to admit it, I believe getting “shit faced” greatly diminishes the gender dichotomy. Rock bottom is the same, irregardless of one’s own anatomy.
Women’s option to get “shit faced” is hampered by Japanese culture, and by women’s fear of sexual assault. Japan cannot have gender equality until women are not sexually victimized.
The nature of culture and sex in Japan is infamous. There is a significant tourism pull based around sexual activities, whether it’s for animated porn, soaplands (bath brothels), hugely expensive sex dolls, sex toys, or the far to large market of trafficked women. The legal age of consent in Japan is 13, though most prefectures have laws making it older, and the average is 16 (10),(12). Unfortunately, the low age of consent subjects girls of a much younger age to sexual pressures. It also allows a market of sexual material that is illegal in all other OECD nations. Common themes that draw sexual tourism are fetishism, the deviance of subject matter, and victimization of women. These traits also perpetuate sexism.
One of the great facilitators of feminism in western cultures was the pill. It gave women the power to choose when to have sex, and who to have sex with. It simultaneously made sex a less deviant act, and made it less of a commitment (11). By taking away much of the prize nature of sex, men and women were able to enter into many more relationships as equals. It also gave women the opportunity to delay the age of pregnancy. This led to an increase in the number of women who got degrees. It also gave career women more time to look for a suitable husband, thus increasing the chances a woman would pursue a career path to begin with. The pill reduced the ‘sacrifice’ women made to work (5). The pill was not legal in Japan until 1999, the use of the pill is still very low, with only 1.3 percent of Japanese females between 15 and 49 using it (6). The social changes that the pill affected in the West are not yet prevalent in Japan. Japan is due for a sexual revolution.

Elbow grease and time are still the predominant method for completing household chores in Japan. Dryers, dishwashers, ovens, all tools for saving time (and energy!) on domestic chores are not widely available in Japan. None of these tools is environmental, a large reason for not using them in Japan, but they are locking women in the role of “homemakers” (7). The failure to use technology to eradicate the necessity for domestic labor diminishes the value of women (8). Laundry can easily become an all day commitment, it is acutely apparent that a change in the laundry system of Japan, would lead to an outstanding cultural shift.
Cleaning is generally done by the women. This is where Ben has been subversive for the feminine cause. He cleans. This is surprisingly subversive, and makes people feel quite awkward. They try to tell him, there is no need for him to help, but without admitting to sexism, they cannot come up with a reason to ask him to stop. I will act subversively by assisting with the men’s chores, which are generally those considered physically demanding. Abstract
GSK, the UK pharmaceutical company is found bribery in China. This is a big problem in Chinese drug market regulation and evoked heated discussion about the practice of GSK, the holes of Chinese current medical system and moral challenge to the practice of GSK. In China, bribery is forbidden by the law and people tend to avoid making bribery, so a foreign company’s such practice is not allowed and accepted in China, which resulted in sales drop of GSK immediately.
Case Synopsis
Glaxo Smith Kline, the UK pharmaceutical company was involved in a Chinese corruption scandal and it faced protests from junior employees that the company refused to reimburse them for bribes, denied bonuses and threatened dismissal. The managers even instructed them to make fake receipts which were used to cover up the bribes. They gave cash or gifts to doctors and hospitals in order to get priority in selling drugs to related hospitals. Chinese people are very familiar with GSK, since heptodin, the regularly used drug in treating hepatitis B is sold by this company. When bribery scandal occurred, Chinese people began to suspect GSK and thus its drug selling dropped immediately after the investigation. This scandal set moral challenges to GSK and GSK also challenged people’s acceptance and values and the employee’s values in GSK. This case is very important in China not only because GSK is big company and it was believed by most Chinese people for a long time, but also because it reflected some holes in current Chinese drug regulation.
Disseverance of the Facts
There should be some relevant evidence and technical knowledge to be considered in order to understand the situation fully. Through investigation, the investigators found some evidence. Some salesmen said, in some instances, managers disguised their involvement in bribery by using their personal email address to instruct staff to pay bribes or by ordering junior staff to claim on their personal expense accounts, even of such money was paid by the managers to bribe doctors or officials. Some staff were warned not to implicate their supervisors and the involved managers even had made a story to tell the investigators.
Values Conflict/Moral Challenge
The six universal moral value perspectives are care liberty, fairness, loyalty, authority and sanctity. In this case, the practice of GSK challenged the value of fairness. By bribing doctors, hospitals and other officials in China, GSK caused unfair competition in Chinese drug market and put patients at stake. Ethical standpoints of common humanity are care, justice, equality and utility. In this case, justice and care did not exist during the bribery practice. GSK’s did not protect justice but damage it for their won benefits. The involved managers did not care the patients and put them in dangerous position. The ethical standpoints of character are virtue, duty and principle. In this case, the involved employee lost their virtue, duty and principle. Drug selling and working in medical industry is a holy job since the sellers are saving people’s life in some way. But the involved employee adopted bribery to sell more drugs in order to get more bonuses from the company and denied the junior employee’s bonuses which were used to pay bribes. Therefore, the involved managers were investigated, the sales had a sharp drop and the company lost their good reputation among Chinese people.
Stakeholder Interests
The stakeholders in this case are GSK, its managers in China, employees, doctors, patients, etc. After the investigation, GSK said that they would cooperate with the investigators and they believed that most of the employees were responsible to their job. The involved managers also denied fraud, but junior employees and some salesmen protest that the managers were lying. Doctors got bribes in the bribery process and gave convenience to the managers. The claims of GSK may not be valid but those of the involved managers must be lies. The bribery must have been undergoing for a long time, the superiors in the company may know about it but they kept silent since the practices of the managers actually improved sales. The claims of junior employees and some salesmen proved the involved managers were lying. However, the most important stakeholders are patients for all the drugs were used on them. Patients’ claims are more urgent and compelling. They worried that their health may be influenced due to the use of GSK’s inappropriate drugs. Patients are the final consumers of these drugs. Since bribes exist, the prices of the drugs sold by GSK are higher than they should be. Therefore, the patients paid more but got less security.
Most Feasible decisions and Actionable Options
There are three feasible and actionable options for GSK. The first is to apologize to the public, that is, to take the responsibility as a whole, set more rule, stop paying doctors and make compensation to the patients and employees who had losses in this case. This action meets the long-term value and it helps to rebuild reputation and better company ethics for GSK. The second is to announce those involved managers’ own actions and faults and that the company has no idea of this fraud. This meets better short-term value, that is, it may reduce short term losses of GSK, but it may not be able to restore customer confidence. The third is keeping silent and the investigators in China will give a result, and then the consumers will make their own choice.
The Most Ethical Option
Among the three feasible options, the first one may be the wisest one for the long-term development of the company. Medical companies are doing a holy job since they sell drugs to hospitals. In this level, they are saving people’s life. But in GSK’ case, the company cheated the consumers and patients. The most important stakeholders are the patients. Before the investigation, the patients believed in the company and their drugs, but later they lost confidence in GSK and worried about taking inappropriate drugs. One of my core values is that people should never impose on others what you would not choose for yourself. In this case, if the involved managers put themselves in patients’ position, what would they think about after knowing the truth? Patients are eager to regain health and they do not want to take risk. GSK should make some actions to comfort consumers and patients and take their responsibilities since making mistakes is not horrible but not remedying for them.
A Persuasive Argument
Making apology is right because this option is most morally permissible, therefore GSK should apologize to the public.

Primary data. Primary data will be acquired through questionnaire with students visiting the canteen and in the activity hall.

The sample. A carefully-designed questionnaire will be used, which will be randomly given to students.


Delimitations
The research will be delimitated in the following ways:
1. Survey will be confined to the campus.
2. Survey will be restricted to a week in July.

Limitations
The following limitations of the study must be acknowledged at this time:
1. Students who were not in the canteen might have different financial ability and opinion of the qualities of a suitable car.
2. Students who were not on the campus during this time might have different financial ability and opinion of the qualities of a suitable car.

Data Analysis
Summary statistics will be computed with careful calculations.

Resources Needed
A research associate will use approximately 100 hours to prepare the data collection instruments, enter and analyze the data, and prepare the final report. We anticipate employing a team of 7 people with 7 computers and 1 printer in the surveys. Standard cost allocations for the respective job grades will be applied.

Presentation of Results
I will present our findings as recommendations to students in a written report which will be released online on student forum no later than August 13.
