　したがって、この大学を構成する教員は、他に専任の職を持ち一定期間この大学に所属して業務を行うということで、所属教員が固定化しないためにも任期制は必要だと言ってよい。

　しかし、これはあくまでも建前である。他に専任の職を持ってこの大学で仕事ができる者など、科目作りの際に名目上客員教員の身分が付与されるものを除けばあり得ない。

　しかも、助教授連中にとってはここを放り出されたら路頭に迷うものも少なくない筈だ、自分を含め。

　既成事実が現状を支えている以上、今になって再任制限を設けるなぞ、そんなことはできるはずもない。制度上も無理だ。

　私学ならば理事長の気まぐれでこんなことは十分ありそうだが、そもそもこの大学は私学ではない。どちらかと言うと公立だ。実態は国立大学を定年で退職した人の受け皿だ。だから教授のポストが無くなると困るので学内昇格の制度が無い。

　それでも、再任が繰り返されていさえすれば、いつかは他大学へ「栄転」することも夢ではない、だろう。しかし、再任制限が加えられたらそんな呑気なことも言ってはいられない。

　教授会とは異なり大学の意思決定には全く影響を与えない単なる親睦会だ。しかし、学内に助教授から教授に昇格する仕組みが無いという極めて異例な大学なので助教授たちは助教授会を大切にし、正規の教授会の後、必ず助教授会を開き種々の意見交換をしていた。単なる宴会になるときがほとんどだったが。

　そんなわけで欠席しても再任拒否にあうわけでもないので酷暑の中、出て行くのも面倒だった。だが、「ぜひ来てほしい」という幹事の口調が尋常ではないので出席することにした。

　一　その日も昨日の仕事の余波で寝坊をしていた。先に起きて洗濯やら朝食の用意やら忙しく動き回っていた妻が、「封書が来た。」と不安そうな顔で枕元に立っていた。

　その封書は私の勤務先から来たものであった。B５の紙が四つ折りで入る事務連絡用の封筒だが軽い。この時期に来るとしたら嫌な知らせに決まっている。開封。「貴殿から申請のあった再任用についてはこれを行わないこととなったので通知します。」

　再任拒否だ。さてどうする。妻の不安が的中してしまった。

　私の勤務先は大学であった。自分の身分は助教授。助教授なのだから当然のことながら専任である。しかし、不思議なことにこの大学は任期制を採用している。任期は５年。任期満了の一年前に再任の希望の有無を事務局から打診され再任希望の書類を出す。これを学内のどこかの機関が「審議」、かどうかは分からないが処理をして再任が決まる。

　この大学ではこれまでほぼ例外なく再任が認められてきた。過去に極わずか、教授の再任拒否事例があったと聞くが助教授の再任拒否は無かった。ちなみに、過去に再任を拒否された教授のうちの一人は、「公務による出張」を理由に教授会を欠席したのだが、その同じ日に犬の散歩をしていたことが発覚したそうだ。私は犬を飼っていない。
